Houndoom—the evolved form of Houndour.
Under normal circumstances, whenever a pack of Houndour operates in the wild, there is always a Houndoom acting as their leader.
But—
Among the more than twenty Houndour surrounding the camp, there wasn't a single Houndoom in sight.
"That's strange…"
Chen Mo frowned.
Inside the camp—
Perhaps because the Houndour hadn't made any moves for a long ti, so staff mbers grew a bit bolder.
They took out berries, holding them in their hands as if intending to feed the Houndour.
"Don't go near them!"
Hu Chengliang quickly stepped forward and stopped them.
He wasn't worried about the berries—
But about the risk.
Even if the Houndour hadn't shown hostility, who knew whether feeding them recklessly might provoke them?
It seed unlikely—but after what happened in the ruins, Hu wasn't willing to take chances.
The staff hesitated, then backed off.
At that mont—
Chen Mo walked over and gently patted Hu on the shoulder.
"Relax, Hu."
Then he gestured to the others.
"Place the berries in front of them."
"Xiao Mo…"
"Trust ."
Chen Mo smiled.
He had already used Insight Eye.
Most of the Houndour had a favorability of around 10, with the lowest no less than 5.
Even toward him—a stranger—they weren't hostile.
So toward others, it should be the sa.
More importantly—
Even without Insight Eye, he could tell.
These Houndour looked exhausted.
They had clearly been starving for a long ti.
Their status showed multiple negative conditions.
Chen Mo couldn't help but worry.
"Go ahead, eat."
He placed berries in front of one Houndour.
The Houndour hesitated.
Then—
Sensing no hostility, it picked up an Oran Berry and swallowed it almost whole.
Seeing this, the rest of the pack rushed forward, devouring the food.
The chat reacted imdiately:
[They're starving…]
[They actually look kind of cute like this…]
[Did they co to the camp just to ask for food?]
Chen Mo gently stroked one Houndour's back.
It paused—but didn't resist.
"Berries won't be enough," Hu said, now fully reassured.
Chen Mo nodded.
"Houndour are omnivores. Could you get so at as well?"
"Of course."
"And maybe have so Chansey co check them too."
Chen Mo didn't rush to ask questions.
The Houndour still had their guard up.
Better to build trust first.
Soon—
Chansey arrived by helicopter and began treatnt.
Though the Houndour weren't injured, their condition visibly improved.
Just as Chen Mo was about to ask what was going on—
The Houndour he fed earlier approached him.
Its eyes carried a hint of pleading.
"Woof…"
It glanced toward the departing Chansey.
Chen Mo imdiately understood and stopped them.
Then asked:
"You have an injured companion? You want help?"
The rescue teams had been helping injured Pokémon across the mountain.
Perhaps the Houndour had noticed—
And ca seeking aid.
But strangely—
The Houndour didn't respond imdiately.
Instead, it turned to communicate with the others.
"Can't understand ?"
Chen Mo glanced at Pikachu.
"Go try."
"Pika!"
Pikachu stepped forward confidently.
"Pika pika! Pikachu!"
…
No response.
The Houndour ignored it.
"Co back."
"Pika…"
Pikachu looked dejected.
[Poor Pikachu, can't join the conversation]
[First translation failure?]
Chen Mo smiled faintly.
This wasn't the first ti.
Houndour used unique vocal signals only their kind understood.
It was normal that Pikachu couldn't interpret them.
After a while—
The Houndour finished communicating.
The sa one returned to Chen Mo, gently biting his pant leg and tugging.
"You want to follow you?"
"Woof!"
It nodded.
Chen Mo: "…"
So it could understand him.
Turning to Hu, Chen Mo asked:
"Can I go with them?"
"Of course."
"I'll co too."
They set off imdiately, bringing dical supplies.
After over an hour—
The forest thinned into an open area.
"Woof!"
The Houndour suddenly beca excited and sped up.
"Slow down!"
They didn't listen.
Chen Mo and the others had to run to keep up.
"Look here."
Hu pointed at the ground.
Dense paw prints covered the area.
Clearly a frequent activity zone.
But—
Among them—
Chen Mo spotted a different set of tracks.
Larger.
Distinct claws.
"…Houndoom."
Now he was certain.
The injured Pokémon—
Was likely their leader.
And without it—
The pack had been struggling.
Soon—
The Houndour stopped.
Their movents beca cautious.
Ahead stood a withered tree with a large hollow.
Their den.
And inside—
Their leader.
But sothing felt off.
Why were they so wary?
"Grrrr—!!!"
A roar erupted from within.
The Houndour trembled.
Then—
A tall, black figure erged.
Like sothing from hell itself.
Red eyes.
Cold.
Watching the Houndour like enemies.
[That's Houndoom?! So cool!]
[Wait… why does it look hostile toward its own pack?]
[It doesn't even look injured…]
Houndoom stepped forward.
Each step heavy with pressure.
The Houndour began backing away.
Fear filled their eyes.
Finally—
They broke.
Turning and fleeing—
Hiding behind Chen Mo and the others.
"Hm?"
Houndoom noticed the humans.
Its gaze flickered in surprise.
Hu frowned.
"This isn't right… it's not injured."
The roar ca again.
Weaker—but enough to make the Houndour tremble.
Houndoom advanced slowly.
Then—
Chen Mo finally spoke.
"Houndoom."
"Stop scaring them."
"They ca all the way to find help for you."
"Can we… talk?"
