Sinnoh Region – Celestic Town, Historic Laboratory

Samuel sat at a cluttered desk, eyes rolling over a stack of old docunts.

The symbols scattered on the parchnt appeared aningless to many, yet to him, they may as well have been everyday language.

His gaze moved easily, his face unruffled, but intent.

Suddenly, there was a soothing, robotic feminine voice ringing in his head.

[Congratulations, host. You have mastered all ancient characters.]

[Initializing Skill System… loading process will be completed in one week.]

[Wait patiently, please.]

Sam's eyes grew wide.

"Yay! The system. It works! Finally!" he exclaid in surprise and excitent at the sa ti.

His hand bumped into the water glass accidentally with his elbow.

With a loud crash, it fell off the table and broke on the ground.

All the people around turned to glance at the noise.

"Sam, are you okay?" a concerned voice asked.

One of the researchers ca forward, a gentle smile on her weathered face.

Wearing a white lab coat, with brown hair pulled back in a neat ponytail, she put her hand on his shoulder.

None other than the renowned scholar of Celestic Town and Cynthia, Sinnoh's Champion's grandmother, Professor Carolina.

"I told you not to overexert yourself," she said with a sigh.

"You are burning the midnight oil again, haven't you?"

"There's no point in decoding text if you're going to die before you release it."

Although her tone was laced with reprimand, her voice was charged with earnest worry.

Nineteen years ago, Professor Carolina had taken the two-year-old Sam in when he showed up in the Sinnoh Region.

She never pushed too strongly for details about where he ca from.

Instead, she brought him up as family and fostered his abilities with patience and care.

"I'm fine, Grandma," Sam answered hastily, pushing the shattered glass aside with a handkerchief.

A rosy flush touched his cheeks, he couldn't contain the exhilaration.

After all, his much-hoped-for System had just activated.

Carolina's eyes narrowed, skeptical of his response, but chose not to pursue the issue.

She put a pile of papers on the desk and pushed him aside gently.

"You've done enough these days. The research on the Sea God of the Hoenn Region has actually made real progress because of you."

She smiled slightly at him.

"We're at the closing stages now. Let us deal with it."

Sam hesitated.

"But...."

"No buts. Go rest."

Her voice brooked no argunt.

She looked at another researcher and handed over the gathered papers.

Then, in a gentler tone, she continued, "Also, if I'm not wrong, that granddaughter of mine should be returning from Lily of the Valley by now."

Sam blinked.

"Cynthia?"

Carolina smiled wisely.

"Yes, that little one. You two never get to be alone with each other these days. Take the chance to catch up."

Just on cue, a low, smooth growl sounded from outside the lab.

Professor Carolina's eyes sparkled.

"Speak of the Devil. That should be her."

She did not hesitate to take Sam by the wrist and guide him to the lab entrance.

Soon after, Sam accompanied Professor Carolina out of the laboratory, sunlight on his face as he erged into the soft wind of Celestic Town.

The roar of rushing wind caused him to look up sothing was falling from the sky at high speed.

A dark blue haze ripped through the air. It was sleek, razor-sharp, and strong.

The shape of the Pokémon, as shark-like as a shark, as blade-like as a knife, left no doubt about its identity.

Garchomp, the Dragon/Ground-type pseudo-legendary of the Sinnoh Region.

As soon as it landed, the wind stirred in a whirl of leaves and dust.

With the ease of long practice, soone dropped down from Garchomp's back, landing as light as a feather.

She had long, golden locks that blew in the wind and donned a black coat that flared with her steps.

Her piercing gray eyes softened the mont they saw the two figures waiting.

"Grandmother!"

Cynthia smiled, speeding towards them.

"Little girl, you're finally here," Professor Carolina welcod with a wise smile, her tone filled with love.

Cynthia let out a teasing hum of confirmation and slapped the Poké Ball on her hip, calling up Garchomp in a burst of red light.

She flashed a speedy hug to her grandma before focusing on the one next to her.

She wrapped her hand around Sam's arm without even thinking, leaning in as if it was completely natural.

"Sam~" she whispered, speaking softly and sweetly in his ear.

Professor Carolina smiled in approval, patently entertained.

"You two haven't seen one another in quite so ti," she said.

"You've certainly got a great deal to discuss. I'll return to the laboratory and let you two talk."

Glancing at them once more and nodding softly, she reversed direction and went back inside.

The instant she was out of sight, Cynthia wrapped her hand tighter around Sam's arm, her shoulder pressing softly against his side.

Her tone softened to a warm whisper.

"It's nearly a month," she murmured, pushing her hair back behind her ear.

"Did you miss ?"

Sam shifted to stand facing her.

Her sll was as comforting as it was familiar sweeter than the scent of sakura leaves during spring rain.

He smiled warmly into her eyes.

"Of course I did," he replied, his voice soft but firm.

Cynthia's eyes glittered.

The two had spent their entire lives alongside each other in Celestic Town, never apart since they were children.

They were not only research and battle partners, childhood sweethearts who were as close as two hearts could possibly be.

Their quiet engagent ceremony had been shared a few weeks prior, with Professor Carolina and a small group of close friends in attendance.

To the world, Cynthia was the fierce, elegant Sinnoh League Champion, formidable, brilliant, respected.

But to this mont, with the one she loved most, she was only a girl, head over heels in love.

"Hmph~ not even a little hesitation?" she teased.

Then, before Sam could reply, she ca up onto her toes and kissed him softly on the cheek, soft, warm, filled with love.

A pink blush spread over his cheeks. Cynthia smiled, looking satisfied with the result.

"Co on," she said, pulling him along.

"You can explain it all to over tea. I'd love to hear what you've been doing. Don't even attempt to keep anything secret."

Sam agreed, keeping pace with hers.

"Only if you tell how your outing to the Battle Frontier was."

As they strolled off down the stone path, between the ancestral hos and the flowering plants of Celestic Town, the world seed to have fallen into silence around them.

Even in the largest and most volatile region of Sinnoh, this small town retained its silent wonder, and for Sam and Cynthia, it was ho.
