Now reading: Chapter 253 253: The Second Match: Grass Field Preparations from Pokemon: Bounty Hunter, a Action novel by Takeiteasy.

Slowbro is a Pokémon of great research value and scientific significance.

It is currently the only Pokémon known that perfectly matches the fusion evolution theory.

Why do we say that?

Because the two Pokémon that make up Slowbro — Slowpoke and Shellder — each retain their own consciousness and can even communicate with each other.

In fact, if the Shellder attached to Slowbro's tail ever detaches, Slowbro reverts back into a Slowpoke.

It is the only Pokémon known to be able to "de-evolve" after evolution.

Many Professors and scholars speculate that, rather than a true "fusion evolution," it may instead be a unique form of symbiosis a special relationship existing only between Slowpoke and Shellder.

Other Pokémon that appear to "fuse" when evolving are actually quite different from Slowbro in the process and result.

At the very least, none of them can revert after evolution.

For example, in the Johto region, Mantyke needs to level up while accompanied by a Remoraid in order to evolve into Mantine.

When Trainers capture a wild Mantine, they often find a Remoraid attached beneath its wings.

Although the two can oddly be contained in a single Poké Ball, the later presence or absence of the Remoraid does not affect Mantine's form.

Even after separating from Mantine, Remoraid can still freely evolve into Octillery.

Thus, they are always recognized as two individual Pokémon, not one combined being like Slowbro.

For this reason, many official tournants — including regional leagues — require Mantine to undergo pre-battle inspection, ensuring that no Remoraid remains attached to prevent unfair "two-on-one" situations.

Likewise, Pokémon such as Vanilluxe, Dugtrio, and Magnezone — which seem to be multiple creatures fused together actually evolve through a kind of splitting evolution.

Despite appearances, they are still considered a single Pokémon.

Even pseudo-legendary tagross follows a similar pattern.

To evolve from Beldum → tang → tagross, it doesn't require two separate Beldum or tang rging together.

It's simply that one Pokémon's energy reaches a point where it can divide and evolve on its own.

If that weren't true, then the Hoenn Champion Steven Stone, heir to the Devon Corporation, would have needed four different shiny Beldum just to obtain his shiny tagross!

Not to ntion its ga Evolution, ga tagross which the Pokédex describes as fusing one tagross, one tang, and two Beldum.

If that were literally true, he'd need eight shiny Beldum.

Even the wealthy Devon Corporation couldn't afford that.

So the Pokédex entry isn't exactly wrong the quantity described is figurative, representing its body structure rather than literal fusion.

The Nosepass line shares a similar evolution pattern.

When exposed to a special magnetic field, Nosepass evolves into Probopass, attracting three small Mini-Noses to form its complete body, reaching 1.4 ters tall.

These mini-noses aren't separate Pokémon but rather extensions or components, drawn together only by the special magnetic field.

In short, Pokémon evolution takes countless mysterious forms but none is as unique as that of Slowpoke and Slowbro.

Slowpoke's tail is said to be as delicious as Farfetch'd's leek, but its evolution has been called one of the Seven Great Mysteries of the Pokémon World by Professor Ethan Walsh V, the sa scientist who co-developed the original Pokédex alongside Professor Oak.

Before Oak's ti, the Walsh family were the most renowned researchers in Kanto — from Ethan Walsh I through V each contributing greatly to the cataloging of Pokémon data.

"Slowbro, use Blizzard!"

Seeing Silas stand silently without attacking first, Nora Sumrs's face flushed with anger.

"So you're underestimating , huh? Fine! Then I'll defeat your Pidgeot myself!"

Gritting her teeth, she ordered Slowbro to unleash a wide-area attack.

Straight-line moves like Ice Beam were too easy for a Pidgeot to dodge, given its incredible speed.

Slowbro's dull eyes suddenly glead; it gathered Ice-type energy with surprising quickness, completely at odds with its lazy appearance.

Thanks to the Ice Field's boost, the Blizzard ford in an instant.

The pale-blue gale roared toward the Pidgeot hovering motionless in mid-air.

Though the swirling snow and ice shards looked gentle, they carried terrifying destructive power.

"Agility!"

Slightly distracted, Silas quickly commanded his Pidgeot to evade.

A faint shimr of light flashed across Pidgeot's feathers, making them gleam.

With a sweep of its wings, the speeding Pidgeot left several long afterimages trailing behind, dazzling to the eye.

"Whoosh—!"

The Blizzard chased close behind, refusing to let up.

"Hmm… that Psychic power isn't weak at all," Silas murmured.

Ordinarily, a non-Ice-type Pokémon couldn't manipulate Blizzard so precisely.

But judging by Slowbro's eyes glowing with blue-violet light, it was using its Psychic abilities to maintain control of the storm.

The scale of the Blizzard grew larger and larger.

Using Ice-type moves on an Ice Field certainly had many benefits.

Silas absolutely couldn't allow that Blizzard to strike Pidgeot Ice attacks are super-effective against Flying-types, and Blizzard is one of the most powerful among them.

One direct hit could easily take half of Pidgeot's HP.

"Steel Wing—shatter it!"

Silas chose the most direct and violent approach.

"Piiidgeeoooot!"

Pidgeot's proud cry echoed across the arena as its wings turned tallic silver.

Spiraling once, it folded its wings around its body like twin blades and dove straight into the Blizzard.

A mont of silence—

Then a sharp crack! rang out.

The once-raging Blizzard vanished instantly without a trace.

From within erged Pidgeot, spreading its wings again as it soared gracefully through the air, staring directly down at Slowbro below.

Nora Sumrs felt a wave of helplessness.

Steel is indeed strong against Ice, but this was far too easy!

Slowbro, whose Blizzard had just been crushed head-on, didn't look well.

Because it had infused Psychic energy into the attack, Pidgeot's strike not only dispersed the Blizzard but also disrupted its ntal focus.

Its psychic control wavered.

"You're not attacking? Then it's my turn," said Silas.

"Quick Attack into Wing Attack!"

Fighting a Psychic-type like Slowbro required a different strategy than the earlier battle against Vileplu.

Long-range attacks were nearly aningless, Slowbro could easily block them with telekinetically controlled debris.

And given Slowbro's naturally high Defense, whittling it down from afar would take forever.

However, compared to Pidgeot's lightning speed, Slowbro's movents were sluggish like a turtle crawling.

Even in water, the difference was enormous.

In close combat, by the ti Slowbro's brain processed a command, its body simply couldn't keep up.

Pidgeot's entire form glowed white as it accelerated, even faster than when dodging the Blizzard.

Its wide wings spread as it dove toward the Slowbro floating on the water's surface.

The air pressure split the water below, creating a narrow path as the surface rippled outward.

"Shell Blade!" Nora shouted desperately, praying that Slowbro had recovered from its ntal disruption.

Unfortunately, her prayer went unanswered.

"Bang!"

Pidgeot's glowing wings struck Slowbro's pink body with brutal force.

Slowbro was hurled out of the water, spinning through the air before crashing onto one of the few remaining ice floes.

"Aerial Ace!"

Following Silas's command, Pidgeot kept up its relentless assault.

"Confusion—steady yourself!"

Seeing Slowbro sent flying again, Nora Sumrs tried to help it stabilize over the water or on a floe.

Even with Psychic powers, Slowbro could only manage limited levitation nowhere near true flight.

Against a Flying-type like Pidgeot, it could only take blow after blow.

"Help it a little — Gust!" said Silas rcilessly.

If you don't want to stay in the air, then I'll make sure you fall.

Pidgeot climbed higher, instantly positioning itself above Slowbro's head.

"Whirrr—!"

Its powerful wings beat furiously, creating gusts so strong they pressed down the water's surface.

"Splash!"

A sound of water followed. Slowbro, who had been using Psychic to gently keep itself suspended, was suddenly struck by the force and dropped straight into the lake.

"Thank goodness…" Nora Sumrs breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Pidgeot's gust had blown away the nearby ice. Falling into the water was far safer than slamming onto a hard ice sheet.

From that height, falling into water would at most be uncomfortable.

And since Slowbro was underwater, Pidgeot wouldn't be able to attack it for the ti being — it could even take a mont to recover.

This wasn't stalling; it was simply forced passivity. The rules allowed this, it was a reasonable tactical choice.

Still, staying subrged too long would risk referee interference.

"Use Hurricane," Silas ordered coldly.

He didn't care where Slowbro was hiding — Pidgeot, with its sharp eyesight and natural instinct for hunting Water-type Pokémon, knew perfectly well what was happening beneath the surface.

But fighting a Water-type in the water was aningless.

It was much simpler to stir the lake itself and force Slowbro out.

Whoooosh!

Columns of water surged skyward. The mighty Hurricane transford into a towering waterspout, resembling a Gyarados unleashing Dragon Rage beneath the ocean's surface.

Nora Sumrs wanted to issue a command — but her hands simply dropped weakly to the railing.

At this point, even hoping that Slowbro could remain conscious felt unrealistic.

Pidgeot flew back toward Silas's side, gazing calmly at the whirling vortex.

After half a minute, the imnse waterspout finally dispersed, leaving the battlefield quiet once again.

"What a spectacular display!" the comntator exclaid.

"Silas's Pidgeot's Hurricane completely shattered my expectations that was no re gust, it was a full-sized tornado!"

The audience wholeheartedly agreed. That last scene had been breathtaking.

Even though safety regulations kept spectators at a distance, many were still drenched by the flying spray.

Thankfully, everyone ca prepared with raincoats — after all, this kind of thing happened every year.

"Broooh…"

A weak, unconscious cry echoed as Slowbro floated to the surface, its eyes turned into dizzy spirals.

"Slowbro has lost its ability to battle!" the referee announced.

"That was Nora Sumrs' final Pokémon — according to tournant rules, she is eliminated!

Let's thank Nora and Silas for giving us such an exciting battle!

Though she lost, Nora's skill was impressive we hope she achieves even better results in future matches.

Still, Silas's Pidgeot was truly astounding — defeating three Pokémon in a row singlehandedly is no small feat!"

Before the referee could even finish the formal declaration, the announcer had already launched into his summary.

Face tight with frustration, Nora withdrew her Slowbro. When the referee officially declared the match over, she turned and left the field without a word.

Silas, who had extended his hand for a post-match handshake near the exit tunnel, awkwardly ended up shaking the referee's hand instead.

The referee sighed helplessly.

The handshake wasn't mandatory just good sportsmanship.

But considering how badly she'd lost, her reaction wasn't hard to understand.

Especially with that comntator running his mouth nonstop, even the referee found him irritating.

"Good thing I'm the referee," he muttered to himself later. "Otherwise, I'd probably get jumped walking ho at night."

Back in the resting area, the referee took a sip of water, shaking his head.

Comntary wasn't easy work either to keep the audience excited, comntators often said things that annoyed the competitors.

Rumor had it and it was just rumor, of course that every year after the League ended, there was a noticeable spike in assault reports involving comntators being attacked at night.

Inside the Pokémon Center's Service Hall…

"Too harsh? Was it?" Silas asked, handing his trainer ID to Nurse Joy for verification.

Yezo was sitting nearby, arms crossed, clearly amused. His match was scheduled for tomorrow, so he had plenty of ti to hang around.

"Of course it was!" Yezo said. "That girl was a pretty strong trainer, you know and you wiped out all three of her Pokémon with just one Pidgeot!"

Silas rubbed the back of his head, smiling sheepishly. "Eh, it wasn't that big of a deal."

Pfft!

Nurse Joy couldn't help but laugh as she typed.

"That's what you took away from that?" Yezo said incredulously.

"Isn't that the point?" Silas asked, confused.

Yezo sighed and rubbed his temples.

"All right," Nurse Joy said sweetly, handing Silas his ID back. "Congratulations on clearing the first-round match on the Ice Field!

Your second-round match will take place on the Grass Field.

Detailed information will be sent to your Pokégear watch nine days from now that's March 20th in the evening. Please check your notifications."

"Thank you, Nurse Joy," Silas said with a polite nod.

Each arena's first-round elimination matches would take at least eight days since there was only one field per environnt, and so many matches to hold, it couldn't all happen at once.

That gave Silas plenty of ti to scout out strong potential opponents.

"Co on, let's go," he called to Yezo
