As the referee's flag dropped, the tension in the Heartho Gym didn't dissipate; it thickened like a heavy fog. The spotlight shifted, following the graceful movent of the purple fabric as Fantina raised her Poké Ball.

"You perford with such elegance, Drifloon," Fantina murmured, her voice carrying a maternal warmth. The red light reclaid the balloon Pokémon, and Fantina turned her gaze back to . Her eyes weren't just competitive now—they were glowing with the fire of a true artist who had found a worthy rival.

"Magnificent, Julian! Truly magnifique!" She began to pace the edge of her podium, her gown swishing rhythmically. "I did not expect my Drifloon's debut to be t with such a clever trap. You utilized the stacking of paralysis and confusion to create a sanctuary for your Sylveon to strengthen herself. It was like watching a master conductor prepare his orchestra before the first note is even played!"

I stayed focused, my hand hovering over my belt. "I've learned the hard way that you can't rush a Ghost-type battle. If I didn't set the pace, your 'ghostly dancers' would have run circles around ."

"And that is exactly why I can no longer treat you as a re traveler," Fantina declared, her smile widening into sothing sharp and excited. "You have the eyes of a veteran and the heart of a perforr. It would be an insult to hold back now! Let the second movent begin!"

With a theatrical spin, she hurled her second Poké Ball. "Gengar! The stage is yours! Make them shiver with delight!"

In a burst of white light, a plump, shadow-purple figure appeared. Its massive, jagged grin was the first thing I saw, followed by eyes as red as a setting sun. As Gengar manifested, the temperature in the stadium plumted. I could see my own breath misting in the air.

"Geng... gagaga!" The Ghost-type let out a rasping, mischievous laugh, drifting erratically through the air as if the wind itself were afraid to touch it.

I narrowed my eyes. No shadows beneath its feet. No shimring of telekinetic energy. "So," I whispered to myself, "it's a Gengar with the Levitate ability. It's a classic, but in Fantina's hands, it's probably a nightmare to hit."

"You are still hesitating, Julian?" Fantina teased, noticing my defensive stance. "Even after two uses of Calm Mind, you wait for to take the first step? Fine! If you will not strike, Gengar will lead the dance!"

"Gengar! Special moves will be less effective against a Sylveon who has cald her mind," Fantina commanded. "But we do not need raw power. Give them a taste of the abyss! Night Shade!"

This was a brilliant move. Night Shade doesn't care about Special Defense or buffs; its damage is constant, calculated by the Pokémon's sheer level of training. It was the perfect way to bypass Sylveon's fortified defenses.

Gengar's scarlet eyes glowed with an obsidian light. Two beams of jagged black energy erupted from its gaze, lancing across the field toward Sylveon.

"I've been waiting for this! Sylveon, now! Ability Swap!"

Sylveon's ribbons flared outward. A tiny, pink spark of light pinged off her chest, while a matching white spark was yanked forcibly from Gengar. The two specks of light crossed mid-air, switching places and disappearing into their new hosts.

Suddenly, Gengar's cocky laughter turned into a panicked screech. The Ghost-type, which had been floating three feet off the ground, flailed its stubby arms as the "Levitate" ability vanished from its soul. Gravity claid it instantly.

CRASH.

Gengar slamd into the marble floor with a heavy thud. The Night Shade beams sputtered out, missing Sylveon by a mile and scorching the back wall instead.

"What!?" Fantina gasped, her poise montarily shattered. "Gengar!"

"The trap is sprung!" I shouted, snapping my fingers. "Your Gengar relies on its ability to stay mobile. Without Levitate, it's grounded—literally and figuratively. A Pokémon that's spent its life floating isn't going to have the leg strength or the coordination to dodge while standing on solid floor!"

I didn't give her a second to recover. "Sylveon, let's bring the heat! Mystical Fire!"

"Fly-ah!" Sylveon's eyes blazed. Charged by two rounds of Calm Mind, she exhaled a torrent of swirling, iridescent pink and orange flas.

"Gengar, quick! Into the shadows!" Fantina desperately cried.

But she realized her mistake the mont the words left her mouth. The Mystical Fire was so bright, so intense, that it flooded every corner of the arena with brilliant light. There wasn't a single shadow left for Gengar to dive into.

Gengar scrambled on its short legs, looking like a fish out of water. It tried to conjure another Night Shade to block the flas, but the black energy was swallowed whole by the overwhelming heat of the Fairy-boosted fire.

BOOM.

The fire engulfed Gengar in a massive pillar of heat. When the smoke cleared, the purple ghost was lying flat on its back, its skin charred and its eyes swirling with dizziness. The room's temperature imdiately began to climb back to normal.

The referee looked at Gengar, then at , then back at Gengar. He cleared his throat, clearly stunned by the speed of the takedown. "Gengar is unable to battle! Sylveon is the winner!"

Fantina let out a long, shaky breath before recalling Gengar. She looked at the Poké Ball in her hand for a long ti before looking back at . "I... I am stunned. This is the first ti my Gengar has been defeated with such... such clinical precision."

She looked up, a look of genuine admiration on her face. "Ability Swap. A move most Trainers consider a gimmick for doubles matches, yet you used it to strip my Gengar of its greatest asset. You didn't just fight; you deconstructed her."

"I took a gamble that you hadn't trained it to move on the ground," I said, my heart still racing. "In Heartho, everyone expects a spectacle. I decided to give them a lesson in physics instead."

"And a lesson it was!" Fantina laughed, her theatrical flair returning. "Thank you for showing that weakness, Julian. I shall have Gengar training her leg muscles and her Psychic flight every day after this! But... there is still one act left in this play."

She pulled her final Poké Ball. This one felt different. The air didn't just get cold; it started to vibrate with a haunting, lodic frequency.

"This is my masterpiece," Fantina whispered, her voice full of pride. "The enchantress of the night! Mismagius, co forth and sing!"

In a swirl of purple mist, a figure appeared that looked like it had stepped out of a storybook. It wore a tattered purple cloak that resembled a wizard's robe, with three glowing red gems embedded in its chest. Its head was topped with a wide, pointed hat-like growth, and its eyes held a depth of ancient, ghostly wisdom.

Mismagius didn't laugh like Gengar. It let out a low, eerie hum that made the fine hairs on my arms stand up.

"Mismagius..." I muttered. This was it. The reason the Relic Badge was so hard to obtain.

Across the field, Sylveon stood her ground, her ribbons tensed and ready. She had defeated two of the Gym's best, but she was starting to pant. The Calm Mind buffs were still there, but Mismagius was a different breed of Ghost.

"Julian," Fantina said, her voice dropping to a low, dramatic tone. "Can your Fairy-type withstand the Perish Song of my Mismagius? Let us find out in the grand finale!"
