"Hamr Arm!"

Pangoro's corded muscles ballooned with power, Fighting-type aura blazing red-brown along its arm. The punch cut the air with a vicious howl.

Typhlosion's movents were too slow to evade.

Bang!

The crack of impact snapped across the arena. Typhlosion flew sideways like a rag doll, blood spraying from its mouth only to hiss away into white vapor as the flas cloaking its body flash-boiled it to nothing.

Spinning, tumbling then rage.

A buried, ancient heat surged from Typhlosion's core. Blaze erupted.

Its eyes flooded crimson. A mantle of deep red fire unfurled from its back like a royal cape, trailing sparks.

Hollowing out the last of its strength with pinpoint control, Typhlosion arrested its spin mid-air.

"Inferno!"

Where Typhlosion looked, fire consud. Pangoro's thick fur beca fuel.

A pained growl leaked through bared fangs as the Daunting Pokémon rolled, desperate to smother the clinging scarlet flas.

"Burn Up!"

The blast detonated from Typhlosion like a walking foundry, a tidal surge of radiant heat that glazed the stone and turned air to a shimring veil.

Whoooom—

The red tide hamred Pangoro again and again until the giant panda lay still, no fight left in its limbs.

"Pangoro is unable to battle Typhlosion wins!"

The referee's voice rang cold and clear. Heat haze lingered, a shimring mirage above the scorched tiles.

Nolan showed no flicker of displeasure. Smiling, he recalled Pangoro, calling across the field to Lanny:

"Not bad, but the real show's just beginning."

The edge in his smile was a knife. A quiet killing intent bled into the air.

Lanny didn't answer. His focus stayed locked on Typhlosion.

It trembled, ragged breaths. Superheated air puffed from its mouth in bursts of ember-flecked steam. The blood at its lips had already dried into cracked brown tracks. A dented patch on its chest caved in from Pangoro's brutal hit.

This wasn't how Lanny planned it. In the best case, Typhlosion was supposed to trade for at least two of Nolan's non-aces.

He had underestimated Nolan.

One Pangoro had nearly ended its ace Fire-type on its own.

He scanned Typhlosion's condition. It wouldn't last much longer.

His dream of the trophy flickered left hanging by a single thread, tied to the black-and-yellow Poké Ball at his hip.

---

"Magnificent!"

Audrey popped to her feet at the desk, applauding toward the field.

"A razor's-edge counterattack, Typhlosion turned a losing exchange into a knockout with Inferno, followed by Burn Up!"

The words flowed, crisp and practiced years of training distilled into breathless cadence.

"Agreed," Professor Ashford said in his understated way.

Power pure, planetary power shook the stadium.

A silver glare streaked low like a fallen star, tearing a trench across the floor. Speed and force braided together; the air itself scread.

"Giga Impact!"

KRAAASH—

Quagsire, small, blue, and brave, pinwheeled through the dust like a toy tossed by a giant.

"Quagsire is unable to battle—Snorlax wins."

Wind howled through the settling grit. The hulking shadow of Snorlax lood immovable, infernal in the storm of shattered stone.

Lanny's face tightened. Sweat dotted his brow and pattered to the floor.

He recalled Quagsire with stiff fingers and handed the ball to a runner, then swept his belt with his left hand.

Only one ball remained.

Defeat. The word tried to write itself behind his eyes. Nolan stood on his fourth Pokémon, and Lanny was down to one.

Nolan's depth had stabilized the match. A stumble at the start had beco a thodical reversal exactly what a contender with a real bench did in the finals.

---

"The end is in sight," Audrey said, voice easing into a summary cadence. "Our Champion will be crowned any mont now. Let's watch the final curtain from two exceptional competitors."

Her professional judgnt was clear: at this level, a true 1-versus-3 miracle rarely happened. Not in the finals. Not against a team with an ace still in reserve.

Yes, Lanny's Flaaffy was extraordinary but it was still a Flaaffy. Wheel it against three elite opponents, one of them a trump card? The math didn't love fairy tales.

Still... Audrey's eyes flashed. She knew things whispered that drifted to social butterflies long before they reached the press box. And not all of them favored Nolan.

Professor Ashford said nothing. His gaze had narrowed to one point: the black-and-yellow Poké Ball at Lanny's hand.

High in the stands, Damalanth smiled, chin tilted toward the field, patient and entertained.

---

Lanny's fingers closed around the ball. His jaw set.

He hurled it high.

It spun, whistling, a small moon crossing the dark of the arena just for a heartbeat aligning with the cold white disc hanging beyond the stadium lights.

Stars glinted.

Clouds gathered.

Inside that capsule, Kael drew a breath.

'Almost there' he thought, feeling electricity course smooth and bright through every fiber. Just one more mountain. One more.

The latch popped.

Light burst!
