----

Since it was still early, Kai and Erika didn't return to their hotel room to rest. Instead, they decided to scope out the tournant venue ahead of ti and get a feel for the place.

The Whirlpool Cup was divided into two stages: a Preliminary Round and the Main Tournant. Trainers would first compete in three rounds of preliminaries to narrow the field to 64 competitors. Those 64 would then move on to a standard knockout bracket to determine the ultimate champion.

It wasn't that different from the Silver Conference format.

What made it unique was that no Gym Badges were required to enter. This made the Whirlpool Cup, despite being a regional event exclusive to the Whirl Islands, incredibly popular.

When Kai had queued up to register, there were already 50 to 60 Trainers ahead of him locals from the Whirl Islands, sure, but also competitors who had traveled from all over Johto and beyond. The hype was real.

But with an open-entry format ca uneven skill levels. There were Trainers of all kinds, veterans in their sixties, kids barely eight years old; everyone was here just to take part.

For many, the thrill wasn't in winning, but in participating. And hey, what if they got lucky and pulled off a big upset?

Fa was just one victory away.

As they followed the main street toward the venue, Kai pulled out a map he'd received during registration. It was impressively detailed and clearly designed to help Trainers find their assigned battle arenas.

Kai was assigned to Field F, one of sixteen preliminary battlefields spread across the venue.

Just as they arrived in the area, a familiar voice called out to them.

"Kai! Miss Erika!"

They turned and spotted Ash, Misty, and Brock waving enthusiastically from near the main gate, popsicles in hand.

Kai laughed. "I should've guessed. A big tournant like this? Of course, you three would show up!"

Truthfully, Kai felt a little nostalgic. They'd said goodbye only a short while ago, but sohow, they always managed to cross paths again.

Like the chosen heroes of this world, they always appeared where the action was.

After a round of greetings, Kai turned to Misty. "You joining the tournant too?"

"You bet I am!" Misty declared proudly, straightening up. "I'm a Water-type specialist! There's no way I'd miss sothing like this."

Then, suddenly rembering sothing, she leaned in and asked, "Hey, Kai which battlefield are you assigned to?"

"Field F."

Misty breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness! We won't be matched up!"

As a Gym Leader herself, Misty took pride in her skills but she was realistic. There was no way she could beat soone like Kai.

Originally, she'd hoped to compete seriously with Ash for the championship title. But now that Kai was here… well, aiming for second place didn't sound so bad.

Kai chuckled. "Don't worry. With so many competitors, running into each other in the preliminaries is highly unlikely."

He wasn't wrong. If three rounds were required just to trim the field to 64, then there were over 500 Trainers registered nearly as many as in the Silver Conference itself.

Ash, however, had a different attitude.

He gave Misty a disapproving glance. "Co on, Misty, don't be so defeatist! You're just giving up like that?"

Then he turned to Kai, eyes blazing with resolve, clenching his fists.

"Kai, no matter where we et, whether it's in the preliminaries or the finals, I'm going to defeat you and win this tournant!"

Kai grinned. "That's so serious energy you've got there. I'll be looking forward to it."

---

That afternoon, Kai treated everyone to a delicious seafood al at a local restaurant.

As it turned out, Ash and his friends had managed to snag spots at the Pokémon Center. While the place was packed and noisy, it was a goldmine for information. Trainers could swap tips, scout opponents, and adjust their teams accordingly.

Compared to that, Kai's luxurious hotel suite felt a little… disconnected. Comfortable, yes but distant from the energy of the tournant.

After dinner, they said their goodbyes. Kai and Erika returned to their hotel and the tension from earlier returned.

The suite had two bedrooms and a spacious living room, tastefully decorated and perfectly private. But… there was only one bathroom. They'd have to take turns.

The atmosphere between them felt oddly intimate like they were roommates or even sothing more.

Kai, ever the gentleman, insisted Erika take the master bedroom. She tried to protest but eventually accepted, cheeks slightly flushed.

Perhaps aware of the awkwardness, Erika didn't say much. She showered first, then retreated into her room without another word.

When Kai entered the bathroom afterward, it was still thick with steam and sothing else lingered too. A faint trace of her presence.

He couldn't help but sense that sothing between them had shifted.

But now wasn't the ti to dwell on it.

He had a tournant to win.

After his shower, Kai collapsed into bed. His thoughts swirled with strategies and matchups… until sleep took him.

No late-night surprises.

No incidents.

---

At 8 a.m. the next morning, after breakfast, Kai and Erika returned to the venue to et up with Ash and the others.

The stands were already packed. Though it was only the Preliminary Round, the Whirlpool Cup was held just once every three years so even this early stage drew massive crowds.

Erika and Brock took their seats in the audience. As a Grass- and Rock-type expert respectively, neither had any business entering a Water-type tournant. Today, they were just here to cheer.

Fireworks popped in the sky. The stadium buzzed with energy exciting but chaotic.

Kai, Ash, and Misty entered the competitor's tunnel, heading to the waiting room. On the monitors, the opening ceremony was already underway.

As the clock ticked toward 9:00 a.m., the start of the first match approached.

When the signal finally ca, the three friends stood together, hands stacked on top of each other.

"Let's do this!" they shouted.

With grins and quiet laughs, they lowered their hands and split off toward their assigned battlefields.
