----

It was well past midnight at the Sea Temple.

The once-lively sanctuary had slipped into silence. Only the crashing of waves far below the cliffside broke the stillness, the relentless whirlpools roaring beneath the surface.

Kai moved silently through the dimly lit corridors. Gengar floated beside him like a shadow, making no sound, no breath, just a blur of darkness that barely registered as a company. Alone or not, the atmosphere was unmistakably eerie.

Unlike the majestic awe the temple exuded during the day, nightfall brought a creeping sense of dread. The place transford into sothing ancient and haunted.

What struck Kai most was the lighting or rather, the lack of it. Not a single electric bulb could be found. Instead, old-fashioned oil lamps hung from the walls every few ters, their flickering flas casting warped shadows across the stonework.

Then again, this was a sacred temple. Mystery was part of the brand.

The firelight had another perk it helped keep the air dry, fighting off the coastal humidity that threatened to seep into the stone walls.

As they crept forward, Kai glanced sideways.

"Where exactly did you see them?" he asked under his breath.

"Up ahead," Gengar whispered, pointing a stubby arm forward. "There's a shortcut nearby. Follow ."

Kai followed him to a seemingly unremarkable corner. Gengar manipulated a concealed chanism on a nearby torch sconce and with a soft grind, a hidden door opened in the wall.

"Here," Gengar said with a mischievous grin. "I found this earlier while 'exploring.' Leads through most of the temple. Real hush-hush stuff."

Of course. Trust a Gengar to uncover secret passageways within hours of arriving.

The interior was pitch black. The narrow stone passage was barely wide enough for a single person, and certainly not ant for comfort.

Kai couldn't see a thing.

He released his Jolteon from its Poké Ball, letting its crackling body illuminate the path ahead. The glowing sparks from Jolteon's fur provided just enough light to guide their steps.

Twisting corridors, turns upon turn until they reached another hidden exit.

Just as Kai stepped out, a faint shuffle of footsteps echoed from nearby. He imdiately recalled Jolteon and slipped into the shadows.

Deeper in the temple, Jessie, Jas, and owth were sneaking around poorly.

The trio had gotten themselves hopelessly lost.

They had no map, couldn't risk using flashlights, and asking for directions was obviously out of the question.

Now they wandered in circles, exhausted.

Jas finally dropped onto a cold stone step, massaging his aching calves. "Jessie… have we passed this place already? It looks really familiar."

Jessie leaned against a pillar, tongue out like a panting dog. "They all look the sa! You're just imagining things!"

owth suddenly hissed, waving his paws frantically. "Shh! Quiet! You'll wake the guards!"

Jessie scoffed. "Who cares? The tournant's over. Officer Jenny and her team left hours ago. This place is full of priestesses and a few sleepy guards. If anyone tries to stop us, I'll handle them personally."

Jas frowned. "But what if Kai and the others are still here? I saw them being invited to stay."

Jessie snorted. "So what? We'll be long gone by the ti they figure anything out. Grab the staff, sneak out, and hide in the trees. Easy."

That… actually made sense. For once.

What they didn't realize was that Kai was already watching them silently from the darkness nearby.

He now understood their goal Maya's ceremonial staff.

It wasn't just ceremonial. The staff was forged from solid gold and embedded with the Sea Soul crystal, a relic of imnse spiritual and symbolic value. Losing it would be catastrophic for Maya, the Sea Temple, and the entire Whirl Islands.

Were Jessie and Jas acting on their own? Or had the order co from higher up in Team Rocket?

Either way, it didn't matter.

Suddenly, a gust of cold air swept through the corridor. The trio shivered in unison.

Jas pulled his coat tighter. "This place was majestic during the day… why is it so creepy at night!?"

"It's just in your head," Jessie muttered, though she didn't sound too confident anymore. "Don't be a coward!"

Jas glanced nervously at the dark hallways. "Let's just move. We've rested enough."

"Wimp…"

Jessie was about to retort when a ghostly laugh echoed through the chamber.

It was soft… but close.

Very close.

They spun around but saw nothing.

The laugh still lingered in their ears, taunting them.

Gulp.

All three stared at each other, pale and motionless.

Jessie broke the silence with a forced chuckle. "Y-you know what? Maybe we should hurry up…"

From then on, neither Jas nor owth dared walk in front. They shoved Jessie ahead, volunteering her as their unspoken leader.

Grumbling under her breath, she took the lead though her trembling hands betrayed her brave face.
