Kyra’s POV
"Kyra!"
I jumped. Yara was staring at from across my desk, frowning.
"Sorry, what?"
She had been talking about my schedule, but I wasn’t listening. I kept thinking about last night at Nathan’s house. His sister’s birthday party. The way he slled like mint. How we danced together.
"I said don’t worry about Snow," Yara repeated. "Ana is with her, right? They just went to get ice cream."
"Yeah, Ana’s good with kids." I nodded and tried to focus.
I had brought Snow to the office today. After we left Nathan’s house this morning, he bought us new clothes and drove us here himself. The whole car ride was quiet.
After what happened by the pool, I didn’t know what to say. I had planned to tell him the truth about Snow. But when the mont ca, I couldn’t do it.
The words just wouldn’t co out.
I rubbed my forehead. "Okay, keep going."
"You have a eting with Attorney Lee. I booked a restaurant since he’s legit."
"Attorney Lee?" I had never heard that na before.
"He says he’s the family lawyer for the Foster pack."
Foster pack? I didn’t know them either. But sothing felt important about this.
"When?"
"3 PM today. Bon Resto."
The door opened. Snow ran in with a big smile. My heart jumped when I saw Nathan behind her. Ana followed, looking sorry.
"Mommy, I t daddy outside!" Snow said happily.
Yara’s eyes went wide. She cleared her throat. "Co on, Ana. Let’s go." They left quickly.
"Sorry," Nathan said. His voice made shiver. "I was at a café nearby. I saw Snow and Ana there."
My heart was beating fast. "You were eting soone?"
He sat on the couch and gave Snow his phone when she grabbed for it.
"Yeah, an old friend from high school. Drake and Angel. They’re married now."
"Really?" I was shocked. "I rember Angel rejected him in front of everyone at school. I never thought they’d get together."
Nathan smiled. I felt Sylvia wake up inside .
"I thought the sa thing. But I respect Drake now. He never gave up on her, even after everything that happened."
I stared at him. He was talking about Drake, but it sounded like us. Nathan never gave up on either. Sylvia stirred inside .
"Daddy, you said you have a company. Can we go there?" Snow asked.
Nathan smiled and pulled her onto his lap. He ran his fingers through her hair. Watching them made my chest feel tight.
"Soon, sweetheart. I need to go back to work now."
"But daddy, I want to see your office!" Snow’s eyes went wide. "Please?"
Nathan looked at . He was asking permission.
I didn’t know what to say. Part of wanted to say no. But I had that eting later. Ana could watch Snow, but Nathan taking her would be better.
I nodded. "Just bring her back before 4 PM."
Nathan’s face lit up. So did Snow’s. She jumped on my lap and kissed my cheek.
"Thank you, mommy. You are the best mommy in the world."
I laughed and ssed up her hair. "You little charr."
When I looked up, Nathan was watching us. His eyes looked so soft. I couldn’t breathe for a second.
Nathan and Snow left with Ana before 3 PM. I fixed my makeup and left for my eting with Attorney Lee.
I walked through the office. Employees stared at , then looked away fast. I bit my lip and kept walking to the elevator.
They saw Nathan with Snow. They heard her call him "daddy." After Phoebe’s birthday party, people were already talking. Nathan was famous. Everyone knew him. Now they would think we were together.
I got to the restaurant and saw an old man in a nice suit. He had thick glasses and looked like a real lawyer.
"Mr. Lee?"
He put down his iPad and stood up. "Miss Kyra Monroe?"
I nodded and shook his hand. "Yes. My secretary told about our eting."
He smiled. "Please, sit down."
He pulled out my chair. After I sat, he looked at with his hands folded.
"I’ve been looking for you for many years, Miss Monroe."
I blinked. "What do you an?"
He sighed. "Five years ago, I found you. But then you disappeared. I just found you again. A police officer contacted about Elle Young’s relative."
My mouth fell open. "You knew my great-grandmother?"
He nodded and turned his iPad to . There was a photo of my great-grandmother, Elle Young.
"Yes, that was your great-grandmother."
He swiped to another photo. My grandmother.
"And this was your grandmother, right?"
I nodded. "Yes..."
"Belle Peterson, Elle Young’s daughter, never married. But she adopted a girl."
My heart started beating fast. He swiped to another photo. My mother.
"I don’t understand," I said.
My forehead hurt. "Are you saying my mother wasn’t really a Peterson?"
"Eva Foster was kidnapped when she was little," he said. "Her family was very famous in the Northern wolf packs. They had money and power. They thought she died when the kidnapper’s car crashed and exploded. But after twenty years, they found out she was alive. Belle Peterson had adopted her."
I gasped. My hand went to my chest. My heart was pounding. Sylvia growled inside . "Is this real?"
"Eva Foster lived as Kate Peterson," he said softly.
I shook my head. "Why are you telling this?"
"Because your mother was supposed to inherit everything. The money, the business. Since she’s dead, it goes to you. The will says only Eva Foster or her child can inherit the Foster family fortune."
I bit my lip. My head was killing . This was too much. My mother was adopted? She was supposed to inherit a fortune?
"Madam Foster died three months ago," he continued. "Connor Foster, your uncle, is managing the family business now. But the will says it belongs to you."
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I grabbed my water glass. My mind was spinning. Nathan and our problems were enough. Now I had a whole new family? A family fortune?
"You want to take over the business? Inherit money from people I don’t even know?"
"That’s what the will says. It’s your inheritance." His face looked kind. "I’m sorry to bring this news. I’m just doing my job for the Foster family."
