Kyra’s POV
I sighed deeply and stared at the imposing building. Attorney Lee’s law firm was inside. Kieran’s threat had been on my mind for three days. Now I had to make a decision. I wasn’t sure if I would regret it later.
Sylvia was pacing inside . She could feel how upset I was. This wasn’t just about anymore. Kieran had threatened Snow. My daughter. That changed everything.
"He might not hurt ," I whispered as I walked into the building, "but he will hurt my daughter."
I showed my ID to the receptionist. She took straight to the elevator. My heart was beating so fast as I got closer to Attorney Lee’s office. When I walked in, he smiled. He looked happy to see .
"Good morning, Miss Monroe. Have a seat."
I nodded and sat in the chair across from his desk. I held my bag tight in my lap. My fingers twisted together.
"Do you want coffee? Juice or water?" he asked.
"It’s okay, Attorney." I shook my head. "I ca here to talk about my mom’s real family."
He leaned forward. Now he was really listening. "Have you decided?"
I bit my bottom lip, drawing a deep breath. I’d researched the Foster family extensively. They weren’t just wealthy, they were powerful. As the leading hotel and restaurant company in the country, Foster Empire dwarfed even the combined might of my father’s company and Nathan’s business. The Fosters were one of the biggest werewolf families in the North. They had connections I couldn’t even imagine.
It seed absurd how everything had turned so extravagant when all I’d ever wanted was a simple, happy life. I never craved wealth, just my father’s love and attention. Though he hadn’t failed in that regard, I’d failed him as a daughter. Now my mother’s past was seeking my attention, and I refused to fail again.
"I... want to et my mother’s family, Attorney."
Attorney Lee snapped his fingers, clearly pleased. "That’s a very good choice, Miss Monroe. When would you like to et them? I should inform them beforehand."
"Can I et them tomorrow?"
His smile grew even bigger. "Great decision. Madam Foster didn’t want her eldest son running the company. Before she died, she begged to find your mother or her child as soon as possible."
I frowned. "She doesn’t trust her eldest son?"
"She doesn’t trust that he can handle her legacy," Attorney Lee said. "She wanted her legacy to continue. If Connor runs the family business, she thought it would fail in less than ten years."
I bit my lip. "What about her other children? And my mother disappeared when she was young. How could Madam Foster be so sure my mom could handle a big company like that?"
"Your mother was born intelligent, Miss Monroe. She was exposed to the world early because of her intelligence, and when people learned about her background, they beca even more interested in her. Your uncle and aunt, however..." He trailed off aningfully.
"So Madam Foster had high expectations for my mom."
"Indeed."
I nodded slowly. There had to be more to this. Why look for when there were other Foster family mbers? Was I missing sothing? So family fight or power struggle I was walking into?
"I want to know everything about my mom," I said. "How did she end up with the Peterson family? Who took her and why?"
Attorney Lee’s face turned serious. "Are you ready to hear everything, Kyra?"
Sylvia growled softly inside . She sensed sothing important was coming. I got chills. It sounded like a warning.
He reached for a thick brown folder from his safe and pushed it toward . "Madam Foster gave this to . I helped her with the investigation from the beginning. She got sick before we could finish, so I kept going alone. Now it’s done. It’s ti for you to have this."
I stared at the folder. My hand froze. "Why do I feel like it’s sothing scary, Attorney?"
"Nothing in this world is without fear, Miss Monroe. Even our own shadows can be scary sotis."
I swallowed hard. My heart was beating fast. I needed to be strong for Snow, for myself. If I wanted to protect my daughter from Kieran, I needed power and connections. The Foster family could give that.
"Your mom was stolen from her real parents," Attorney Lee said gently, "but I think she lived a good and happy life."
I looked up at him and smiled. "She did."
After we talked, I decided to go ho. I wanted to spend the weekend with my daughter. Tomorrow I would et my mother’s siblings.
I sat in my car and looked at the brown folder on the passenger seat. I was curious, but sothing stopped from opening it. Maybe after tomorrow, I thought.
My phone rang. I put in my earbud and answered. "Hello, Yara?"
"Miss Kyra, where are you?" My assistant sounded worried.
"Driving. Why?"
"There’s an article about you online. It ca out 30 minutes ago. I’ll send you the link."
I raised an eyebrow and ended the call. I found a safe place and pulled over to read it. My mouth fell open when I saw the headline above my photo:
’Kyra Monroe visiting a law firm for divorce or child custody?’
I almost choked. What the hell?
I grabbed my phone and read the article. I got angrier with every word.
’Netizens are speculating that Kyra Monroe and Nathan Anderson, both CEOs of prominent companies, are secretly married after Monroe attended Anderson’s younger sister’s birthday party with a little girl. Anderson has been consistently seen in public with the child, and now Monroe was spotted at a law firm. When interviewed, Anderson remained silent on the issue. Are they secretly married and now divorcing? Is the child Anderson’s biological daughter?’
"What the fuck?" I said, shaking my head. Being the head of a big company ant people watched . But this was too much. They were invading my private life.
I called Ana right away to check on them.
"Hello, Kyra?" she answered.
"Ana, you’re at ho with Snow, right?" I sounded worried.
"Yes, but Snow wants to buy ice cream. I’m just changing her clothes."
"No," I said. "Stay at ho. I’m coming. I’ll buy the ice cream."
"Oh! Okay..." I heard her tell Snow, "Here, talk to her."
"You’re buying my ice cream, Mommy? Really?" Snow sounded so excited.
I smiled even with everything going on. "Yes, sweetie. Stay at ho with Aunt Ana, okay?"
"Okay, Mommy. Be careful. I love you."
Her words made feel better for a mont. "I will. Love you too."
I ended the call and took a deep breath. Who the hell followed this morning? The dia attention would make everything worse. Nathan’s company and mine were both famous in the human world. People would always want to know about our private lives.
