Yeah, Sophia knew it right away Benjamin, this middle-aged man standing before her… was dangerous.
She didn't use that word lightly. In her entire life, she had only called five people dangerous people who had left a mark on her, people whose very presence made her instincts scream, where she felt pressure on her, she felt… fear.
It wasn't a word she threw around to sound dramatic. It was sothing she used only when every part of her being told her that she was standing in front of soone who is just… different.
And that made Benjamin the sixth person on that list.
Just one look at him was enough, that was all it took. The way he stood there calm, confident, almost playful yet his whole being felt like Jas himself for her.
And she had heard stories about him, how many people laughed at him and thought of him as a harmless, strange man who only earned his position by licking ass… but to Sophia this so-called director, the man people called a clown behind his back, was anything but harmless.
No, Benjamin was on another level entirely, she felt more fear of him then Hector or Ferucci… she felt sothing raw, untad, and unpredictable…
And what gave her this feeling wasn't just his eyes though they said enough on their own. There was a strange calmness in them, a kind of focus that only ca from soone who had seen too much and survived it all.
What she felt wasn't fear exactly, it was awareness. A sense that she was looking at soone who lived in a different world, soone whose soul had already crossed the line between life and death too many tis to count.
That smile, that face, that lazy confidence, it all scread danger. It scread that he was not soone to fuck with.
"Are you good, miss?" His voice snapped her out of her thoughts. "You look a little pale. Do you want so candy? Maybe your sugar is low." Benjamin said as he pulled out so fruit candy from his pocket, offering it to Sophia while puffing his cigar.
That mont just seed too surreal, like for a single second, her whole panic and perception about him cracked. But as she looked up into his eyes once again, she was sure of it.
He ain't no candyman, but a fucking monster… though she grabbed the candy anyway.
"Thank you."
"Yeah, no problem. But now, please, let's sit down. I have a whole map, drone footage, and everything we need." He said, gesturing toward the round table.
It looked exactly like sothing out of a movie, the big-ass screens on the wall, the circular table with screens built in, the maps, coordinates, live feeds, even radios.
"So, I originally wanted to drone them down, but the president and the council disagreed with , so what remains is to hunt them down on the ground." He said as he giggled. "But there are no limits on the ground. We can bomb, throw grenades, shoot rocket launchers, even use helicopters with miniguns on them. The only thing is to kill them."
Well, she was a bit surprised and overwheld by the fact he said "helicopter" and that he originally wanted to drone them down… but there was a thing on the screen that caught her attention.
"Can I ask who those are?" She asked, pointing at the screen where a drone was following a convoy.
"Oh, that is the… well, a minister."
"What?" Sophia imdiately asked back, thinking she misheard it.
"Minister of Transportation." Benjamin said with a dead-ass face, staring into her eyes.
"And a drone… is following him?"
"Yeah. You know, Sophia, the National Ergency is not just about criminals. If you heard our speeches, we said we're going to kill corruption… pull out the roots." He gestured with his hands. "So if we hunt tonight, then we hunt properly."
How funny was it… erasing corruption while they were having a private eting… in the headquarters. How funny.
"So is he corrupt? Has connections to the cartel?" Sophia asked, now understanding why people called him strange and unserious.
"Ohh, Miss, a Minister of Transportation going around with five fully armored SUVs?" He giggled again. "It's so obvious he's corrupt. He should fear for his life for nothing… but he's had his hands in many things, but not drugs. Won, prostitutes, and human trafficking." He looked into her eyes. "So we're going to light his bitch ass up."
She almost lost it, almost laughed at it. It was just so fucking unserious the way he said it, like a fucking boor trying to fit in… a fucking director trying to fit in. How absurd and surreal was that… she needed to ask about it.
"Can I ask sothing before we start?" She asked, looking at Benjamin, who was still puffing that cigar while smiling.
"Of course, ask it, Miss."
"I am a criminal. A woman who rose to the top by killing people, by selling information and drugs." She leaned forward, still keeping eye contact with him. "I was hunted by your agency. We were at war with each other… and now we are in a word that I don't like to use, especially with the feds… and that is alliance."
Benjamin felt it, yeah, those eyes of hers just stabbing him, the hate, the aggression.
It was exciting.
"Yeah, well, that's how it is now. But nothing's going to happen to you, Sophia."
"So my question is… why are you this unserious? Are you trying to fit in with this slang and those words? Or is this too a tactic from the agents? Do you want to get into my space, into my zone, where you might get so information out of ?"
She needed to know it, no, she wanted to hear it. To hear what he would say, how he would say it, just to be sure he truly saw who Benjamin was behind it all… behind those acts, behind the way Sophia once behaved, hiding behind that mask she wore only to be seen differently.
