They said their goodbyes to Ferucci, and after that, they were on the way again, finally going back to the house where Jas had run from. The family house that was shot up... that was the beginning of all bad.
How crazy is that... a house holding so much aning.
Like a shell of mories that you only need to open the door to let all of it inside you, let it stir up the mories, the pain, the suffering. Those days when everything was alright, before it all turned into sothing dark, sothing that is no longer what it used to be.
Though, even before it could have happened, Jas noticed so differences.
"Is that our guys?" He asked as they stopped at the gate that led into the neighborhood, and the guard that stood there was... stacked.
Long rifle in their hand, helt and with bulletproof vests.
"Yeah, they are." Hector said, excited to see Jas’s reaction. "I used the sa made-up security company just like at our house. So there is no problem with it, the neighbors and everybody who lives here think they are legitimate, and they actually feel safe considering the recent events."
"That is smart." Jas answered him, and indeed it was. In this way, there wouldn’t be any other incident when motherfuckers can go in and just shoot the house up. No, they would be welcod by guards who are trigger-happy and would shoot the shit out of them.
"But the gate too... wasn’t it cast iron?"
"It was, but it served no protection, so I changed it." Hector explained, and it truly made a difference, like it was a big-ass gate that you could see through that wouldn’t stop soone from ramming through it.
But now it was blocking the view, and it was taller than before.
"You’ll see, so changes happened to our street and the house too." Hector said and when the cars finally rolled through the gate and turned onto their street, it was truly sothing else... like Hector hadn’t just made changes to the house itself, but to the fucking whole street.
A gate at the beginning of the street that led to their house and it wasn’t a simple gate, like one that opens up. No, it was an automatic bollard-type thing, the type they usually put at banks and other institutions to stop soone from ramming into it. On the side was even a little guard post where another man stood with a long rifle in his hand.
"How do you like it?" Hector ca with a big-ass smile on his face.
"Uhm... I’m kinda speechless..." A genuine reaction from Jas as he saw his street turned into a fucking militarized zone. "You did all this while I was away?"
"Yeah. I thought it would be a nice touch for our protection, though I did many more things that you’ll see." Hector said, still smiling, genuinely happy that Jas was stunned.
And he was... because it wasn’t just the house that had protection layers, but the neighborhood itself. The main gate had been changed and was now protected by guards, then another gate that led to their street, also guarded, and after that ca more and more layers of protection, though at first, Jas had a question to ask.
"And who paid for it?" He asked as looked at Hector and his smile just grew bigger.
"Isabella."
"What?" Jas just got more confused.
"She was stupid enough to keep a piece of her money at the sa bank as us, so I asked Frederick to open up her vault. She paid for the gate and, luckily, every single protection elent."
In short, what Hector said was that all of it was paid for by Isabella’s death.
"Sounds like you beca a tomb raider..." Jas laughed, and Hector followed. For a second, though, they both forgot Charlotte was still with them and she imdiately asked a question.
"What is a tomb raider?"
For a second, Jas was silent, as though thinking about how to explain it to her... but he chose not to lie and instead said the truth.
"A group or a person who robs graves and tombs." Jas began. "You know, in the old tis, people threw their jewelry and gold and so on into their tombs, like the pharaohs and kings and people robbed them. Even now, there are people who actively search for ancient tombs to rob."
As he explained it, Charlotte imdiately followed up with another question.
"So..." Charlotte began, now looking at Hector. "You robbed Isabella’s grave?"
"Technically no, because the money was already ours, so I just claid it." Hector answered her in the best way possible, but the blue eye of Charlotte was gripping him like she wasn’t blinking or anything, just staring like a ghost or that doll in a horror movie.
"Woah... that is a bit crazy, isn’t it, Charlotte?" Jas broke their silence and lifted her up a bit to see and it was crazy, in fact.
It was like the old layout, where big SUVs were parked down the street to block it, but now there were even spikes out on the road.
"It is truly so presidential security."
"Well, only possible because we live in a dead end." Hector smiled, though he heard his comnts and was happy about it, but still, there was a bigger surprise he couldn’t wait to see Jas’s reaction to.
And when they finally arrived, it was indeed a reaction that ca from him... he was just speechless.
What the fuck... he thought, just mind-blown by how Hector had managed to do it in just a week... like everything had changed.
The mansion, which should have felt like a sweet ho, a place where he could go and sleep well, just away from everything else... a place to feel at ho had turned into sothing very different.
And he knew, or at least had an idea, that Hector had changed sothing, but it was more than he had imagined.
That sweet ho had turned into a fortress.
