The phenonon did not begin dramatically.
It began with silence.
Not the silence of a passage after a fight, when noise fades and people catch their breath. Sothing older than that. A silence that arrived from outside the normal order of things and pressed itself into every corner of the hidden civilization simultaneously, like the world had stopped to pay attention to sothing it had been waiting a very long ti to see.
Every cultivator in the hidden civilization felt it.
Mid strike, mid step, mid breath. Everything paused. Hollow energy that had been flowing freely through ridians stilled for three full seconds, not drained the way the Void Crawler drained it, but quieted, the way water quiets when sothing vast moves beneath it.
Three seconds.
Then it ca from him.
Not the blue of hollow energy. Not the gold of Eternal Courts cultivation. Sothing that had no na in any record because it had never existed before. The Tiān Emperor Vein and the Hollow Soul Lineage combining for the first ti in history, producing light that passed through walls and barriers and stone as though none of those things were particularly relevant, expanding outward from the Fringe passage in a perfect sphere that covered the entire hidden civilization before anyone had ti to respond.
Where it passed things happened.
Cultivators at the peak of their power felt sothing in their cultivation they had never felt before. A sensation like standing at the edge of sothing enormous and understanding for the first ti how far the bottom actually was.
The Shattered Clans warriors mid skirmish in the contested territories stopped fighting simultaneously. Looked at each other. Could not explain afterward why they had stopped.
The Remnants went completely and utterly silent. Every single one of them at the sa mont. Their eldest mber, a figure who had not opened her eyes in two hundred years, opened them. She said one word. Nobody who heard it would repeat it afterward. But those closest to her said her expression in that mont was not shock.
It was recognition.
Deeper than the factions, in the vast interior spaces of The Hollow that the civilization's maps did not cover and its histories did not record, where the hollow rock was oldest and had been thinking its slow ancient thoughts for longer than any living thing could calculate, sothing moved.
Not quickly. Things that old did not move quickly. But they moved.
Beings who had been standing in the deep hollow dark for so long they had beco indistinguishable from the landscape around them turned their attention toward the surface for the first ti in thousands of years. Their power was so ancient it no longer registered on any scale the factions understood. They did not speak to each other. They had been standing close enough to speak for so long that speaking had beco unnecessary.
They simply turned.
And waited.
As they had always known, with the particular certainty of things that have existed long enough to recognize inevitability when it finally arrives, that they would one day wait.
Across five worlds simultaneously, in the sa three seconds, five children felt sothing that did not belong to their current lives.
In the Cultivation Expanse a boy of seven stopped mid training and pressed his hand against his chest and stared at sothing that was not in that courtyard for four seconds before blinking and picking up his stance and saying nothing to his instructor.
In the Sovereign Kingdoms a boy of seven sat up from sleep with both hands pressed against his eyes and breathed carefully until the feeling passed. It was not a nightmare. It was the opposite of a nightmare. A mory of sothing vast and complete that was gone before he could hold it.
In the Shattered Fringe a boy of seven looked up at a sky that was wrong for three seconds in a new way and then walked on and said nothing because in the Shattered Fringe you noted things you could not explain and kept moving.
In the Deep Eternal a boy of seven stood at the edge of a boat and watched the ocean go completely still. Every wave. Every current. Still. For three seconds. Then the ocean exhaled and was itself again and the boy stood with both hands on the rail feeling sothing in his chest like sothing divided rembering for one mont what it felt like to be whole.
Back in the Fringe passage Tiān Míng Xīn stood in the fading light of what had co out of him with the Void Crawler retreating and Liàng watching from behind her pillar with large calm eyes.
He was breathing hard.
He looked at his hands.
They looked the sa as they always had. Small. Seven years old. The hands that the hidden civilization's asurent instrunts had looked at and found nothing worth recording.
He pressed them flat against his chest and felt the Sovereign Void Lineage settle into him like water finding its level.
Then the second thing happened.
It arrived not from outside but from within, in a place deeper than the Sovereign Void Lineage, deeper than anything Elder Sòng's instrunts would ever reach, in the specific silence that follows sothing enormous finally completing itself.
A notification. Cold and precise and carrying the weight of sothing that had been waiting for exactly this mont.

Míng Xīn went completely still.
Not his usual stillness. Sothing different. Sothing that had no na in the seven years of careful observation he had been building. The stillness of a person whose entire frawork for understanding the world has just been handed an additional piece of information that does not fit anywhere in that frawork and is currently sitting in the middle of it demanding to be addressed.
He stood in the ruined passage with his hands pressed against his chest and the Void Crawler's retreat still echoing in the barrier distortion and Liàng watching him with her large calm eyes and he read the notification three tis.
Insufficient.
He had no response to this.
Then his father arrived.
Tiān Yǔ Chen ca through the response forces like they were suggestions rather than people and reached his son and stopped and looked at him and Míng Xīn looked back and his father pulled him into an embrace that was not gentle and did not apologize for not being gentle and lasted considerably longer than most embraces Míng Xīn had experienced.
Over his father's shoulder he could see Elder Councillor Fang at the edge of the response forces. For the first ti that Míng Xīn could rember Elder Fang's left hand was not pressed flat against his thigh.
It was shaking.
The notification sat in Míng Xīn's mind like a door that had appeared in a room he had lived in his entire life.
He held on to his father and let everything else wait.
