Fang Liú won his match in four minutes.

Míng Xīn watched it with the automatic attention he brought to everything, cataloguing technique, energy expenditure, strategic decisions, and the specific tells that erged when a cultivator was performing for an audience rather than simply fighting. Fang Liú had improved considerably in the nine years since their first eting in the junior training courtyard. His cultivation had reached Soul Forged Peak Stage, which was strong for his age, and he carried himself with the controlled confidence of soone who had been preparing for this specific tournant for a very long ti.

He also fought with a particular deliberateness that had nothing to do with his opponent and everything to do with the seating section above.

Elder Councillor Fang was watching from the senior observers' area — not the faction seating, the elevated platform reserved for council mbers and faction leaders attending in official capacity. He sat with the stillness that Míng Xīn had been watching since age seven, hands folded, expression neutral, giving nothing away.

His left hand, Míng Xīn noted, was completely still.

It had been still since the night of the Void Crawler incident. Nine years of stillness where there had once been a pressed fist. Sothing had changed in Elder Fang that night and the change had held.

Míng Xīn filed this and returned to the matches.

The first round proceeded match by match through the morning. He watched every fight without exception, building a comprehensive picture of each participant's capabilities, limitations, preferred techniques, and behavioral patterns under pressure. The system provided assessnts when asked.

That participant telegraphs his breakthrough attempts, the system noted during the eleventh match. He drops his left shoulder two seconds before committing.

I noticed, Míng Xīn said.

I know you noticed, the system said. I am providing confirmation. This is what support looks like.

You called my Round 1 performance diocre, Míng Xīn said.

diocrely executed diocrity, the system said. Which was the objective. I am consistent.

The Shattered Clans participants fought with a directness that the Eternal Courts training manuals did not have adequate fraworks for. Several manifested partial beast transformations during their matches fragnts of divine beast and demon beast bloodlines surfacing as physical enhancents. The arena responded to each manifestation with crowd noise that built and built as the morning progressed.

Hún Yuán'er had not yet been called.

She sat in the Shattered Clans participant area watching every match with the sa focused attention she had given the arena floor, expression unchanged, giving nothing away. She had not looked at him again since the hollow bell. He noticed this without drawing conclusions from it.

His match was called in the early afternoon.

[ HOLLOW CONVERGENCE TRIAL — ROUND 1 ]

[ Match 19: Tiān Míng Xīn — Eternal Courts vs Shí Léi — Shattered Clans ]

[ Current Rankings ]

[ Rank 1 ] Hún Yuán'er — Shattered Clans — Awaiting match

[ Rank 2 ] Fang Liú — Eternal Courts — Victory

[ Rank 3 ] Yán Hǔ — Remnants — Victory

[ Rank 4 ] Tiān Míng Xīn — Eternal Courts — Awaiting match

He walked onto the arena floor.

The crowd noise from the Eternal Courts section increased sharply. He did not look at his father's position. He already had a precise understanding of what was happening there.

Your father, the system said, is standing on his seat.

I asked you not to tell things like that, Míng Xīn said.

You asked not to tell you when it happened, the system said. You did not specify ongoing updates.

His opponent was a broad young man from the Shattered Clans with a Tiger beast bloodline partially manifested at his collar and shoulders, golden fur visible at the edges of his robe. He assessed Míng Xīn with the open evaluation of soone who had heard the na and was deciding in real ti how seriously to take it.

He had decided: moderately.

This was exactly correct for the secondary objective.

[ Secondary Objective: Do not reveal true cultivation level before Round 3 ]

[ Status: Active ]

[ Current approach: Correct ]

[ Note: Try to look like you are trying. ]

What followed was a carefully constructed performance. Míng Xīn used exactly enough of his actual capability to control the fight's outco without winning it quickly enough or cleanly enough to communicate what he actually was. He absorbed two hits he did not need to absorb. He spent thirty seconds creating the impression of genuine effort.

He won in six minutes.

The Eternal Courts section response was enthusiastic but not overwheld.

Exactly correct.

Convincingly unconvincing, the system said. Well done.

Thank you, Míng Xīn said.

That was not entirely a complint, the system said.

I know, Míng Xīn said.

He walked back toward the participant area.

As he passed the edge of the Shattered Clans section Hún Yuán'er was three steps from the walkway, standing with the stillness she applied to everything, waiting to be called for her own match. He was close enough to see her properly for the first ti without the distance of the arena floor between them.

The gold undertone in her eyes was warr up close. Her expression at rest had a quality he had not been able to identify from a distance not cold, not warm, sothing that had been arrived at after considerable experience with both and had settled sowhere more durable than either.

"You held back," she said. Her voice was quieter than expected. Not soft. Quiet in the manner of things that do not need volu to carry weight.

He stopped.

"Everyone holds back in early rounds," he said.

"Not like that," she said. "You were not conserving energy. You were performing a specific level of capability. There is a difference between the two and you know it."

He looked at her for a mont.

She had identified his secondary objective strategy from a single six minute match while simultaneously waiting for her own match and monitoring the rest of the arena.

Revise threat assessnt, Míng Xīn said internally.

[ Target: Hún Yuán'er ]

[ Threat Level: Revised upward ]

[ Note: She identified the secondary objective from one match. ]

[ Additional Note: You already knew this. I am simply confirming. ]

"You fight well," she said. It was not a response to what he had said and was clearly not intended to be. She was already moving toward the arena floor as her match was called.

[ Match 23: Hún Yuán'er — Shattered Clans vs Lǐ Fēng — Remnants ]

Míng Xīn turned and watched.

What Hún Yuán'er did to her opponent took forty five seconds.

Not because she was being efficient for its own sake. Because forty five seconds was genuinely all it required. She moved through the match with the complete calm of soone for whom this specific level of opposition presented no particular problem, her Divine Dragon Vein suppressed the entire ti, winning on basic hollow energy cultivation and physical capability that had been developed to a degree that made the bloodline concealnt almost secondary.

The arena went quiet when it ended.

Then the crowd found its voice.

[ ROUND 1 — MATCH 23 RESULT ]

[ Hún Yuán'er — Victory ]

[ Match Duration: 45 seconds ]

[ Updated Rankings ]

[ Rank 1 ] Hún Yuán'er — Shattered Clans

[ Rank 2 ] Tiān Míng Xīn — Eternal Courts

[ Rank 3 ] Fang Liú — Eternal Courts

[ Rank 4 ] Yán Hǔ — Remnants

[ Rank 5 ] Unknown — Unaffiliated

Míng Xīn looked at Rank 5.

The unaffiliated participant who had just won their match was standing at the far edge of the arena floor with the stillness of soone who did not want direct attention. Seventeen years old. Plain robes. No faction markings. Features that were unremarkable individually but added up to sothing that was difficult to look away from once noticed. His eyes were the specific problem too still, carrying sothing that had no business being in a face that young.

He had won in three minutes using a technique that existed in none of the texts Míng Xīn had read.

Assessnt, Míng Xīn said.

[ SYSTEM ASSESSNT — ACTIVATED ]

[ Target: Unknown — Unaffiliated ]

[ Age: 17 ]

[ Faction: None recorded ]

[ Cultivation: Concealed ]

[ Bloodline: Concealed ]

[ Origin: Unknown ]

[ Threat Level: Unclassifiable ]

[ Note: This participant should not be here. ]

[ Additional Note: I will not provide further information at this ti. This is intentional. Watch him carefully. ]

The system had never refused a full assessnt before.

Why, Míng Xīn said.

Because, the system said, with a tone that was different from anything it had used before, so things need to be understood through experience rather than information. Trust on this one.

The unknown participant looked up from the arena floor at that exact mont.

His eyes found Míng Xīn's across the arena with a directness that suggested the look had not been accidental.

Sothing happened in Míng Xīn's chest. Not the Tiān Emperor Vein. Not the Hollow Soul Lineage. Sothing beneath both of them. Ancient. Familiar. Completely without rational basis.

Like recognizing soone he had never t in a life he had never lived.

The unknown participant held the eye contact for two seconds.

Then he looked away.

Míng Xīn stood completely still and felt the echo of that recognition settle into him the way the deep hollow pulse settled into his palms at the clan tree slowly, completely, as though it had always been there and he had simply never been in the right place to feel it before.

He looked at the ranking board.

[ Rank 5 ] Unknown — Unaffiliated

He looked at the unknown participant one more ti.

Then he filed everything and waited for the next match.
