His father ca to his room the following evening without being asked.

This was not unusual. What was unusual was that he ca without anything in his hands. No training texts. No administrative docunts he was pretending not to be reading. Just himself, closing the door quietly behind him and settling into the chair beside the window where Míng Xīn was sitting with a book he had not been reading for the past hour.

They sat together in the comfortable silence for a while.

Then his father said: "I want to tell you sothing about your mother."

Míng Xīn closed the book and waited.

His father looked out the window at the clan tree in the darkening courtyard below. The hollow light had shifted to its deep nightti blue, and the ancient bark caught it and held it in a way that made the tree look like it was lit from sowhere inside.

"The first ti I saw her," his father said, "I did not know what she was. I knew she was from the Sealed Ones because nothing else could explain how she moved through a space. Like the space was aware of her and was being careful." He paused. "Most powerful cultivators move like they own the space around them. She moved like the space was sothing she was choosing to respect. The difference sounds small. It is not small."

Míng Xīn said nothing. He had learned that his father's stories about his mother required complete stillness to receive properly. Any interruption and his father would lose the thread of whatever mory he had found his way back to, and the mory would close again like a door, and it could be weeks before he found his way back to that particular one.

"We were both in the border territory between the Eternal Courts and the outer edges. A place nobody goes without reason. I had reason. She had reason. We did not share our reasons with each other." A faint expression crossed his father's face that Míng Xīn did not have a na for but recognized. The expression of soone touching sothing that still carried warmth after a long ti. "There was a cave system that runs through the hollow rock in that territory. Old. Deep. Nobody had mapped it completely because the hollow energy inside behaved incorrectly, which made conventional navigation impossible."

"She mapped it," Míng Xīn said.

His father looked at him. "She had already mapped it. In her head. Without instrunts. She walked through passages she had never physically entered before and knew exactly where they led." He was quiet for a mont. "I asked her how. She looked at for a long ti before she answered."

"What did she say?"

"She said she could feel the hollow rock thinking." His father's voice was careful around the words, the way hands are careful around sothing fragile. "She said everything old enough thought in so way, and hollow rock was very old, and if you were quiet enough and patient enough you could feel the shape of its thoughts and understand what it knew about itself."

Míng Xīn's hands went still in his lap.

"She was not speaking taphorically," his father said, watching him. "I understood that imdiately. She ant it as a precise and literal description of sothing she actually did."

The clan tree outside stood in its nightti hollow light, roots running impossibly deep into rock that was very old and knew things about itself.

Míng Xīn thought about his palms against the bark. The pulse he had felt. Slow and patient and deep. The way it had felt like recognition rather than discovery.

"Father," he said carefully. "When she felt the rock thinking. What did she do with what she felt?"

His father looked at him for a long mont.

"She used it," he said simply. "She used everything. Every piece of information the world offered her, through whatever channel the world chose to offer it. She never questioned the channel. She only paid attention to what ca through it."

Míng Xīn sat with this for a long ti.

Outside the clan tree stood in its ancient patience and the hollow rock beneath it held its thoughts the way it had always held them, waiting for soone quiet enough to feel them.

He pressed one hand flat against his own chest.

The sothing inside him that had no na turned toward that information the way a compass needle turns. Not dramatically. With complete and absolute certainty.

"Thank you," Míng Xīn said.

His father nodded once and looked back out the window, and they sat together in the comfortable silence until the nightti hollow light deepened and the compound went quiet around them.

Míng Xīn did not sleep well that night.

Not from distress. From the feeling of sothing newly understood that was still finding its proper place inside him, rearranging other things to make room for itself.

By morning it had settled.

And he was different in a way he could not have asured and did not try to.
