I lay there, utterly dumbfounded. My last few functioning brain cells felt like they were committing suicide one by one.

All of it—the war, the death, the collapse—could have been avoided if he had just chosen one man and let the others move on. But no. He wanted the adoration, the obsession, the security of all five.
