Ning Shu’s vision was sharp, even in the dark. She saw everything clearly: the house was practically bare, just as she’d expected.

No wonder Li Bing was still a bachelor. Add an unreasonable mother like his into the mix, and it was no surprise no woman was willing to marry into this family.

Yet Li Bing’s mother acted like the fact that she was allowing Wang Ying to marry into their family was some great honor.

As if it was some sort of privilege.

Just because Wang Ying had been raped, they assumed no other man would want her.

Tsk tsk. Even if she never married for the rest of her life, she wouldn’t be stupid enough to accept such self-torture.

Ning Shu entered the bedroom, where Li Bing’s mother was sleeping.

But Ning Shu noticed something odd: there were two pillows on the bed.

One person using two pillows?

A disturbing thought crossed Ning Shu’s mind—could it be that Li Bing, despite being in his forties, was still sleeping with his mother?

Then again, maybe Li Bing’s mother just liked having two pillows.

Ning Shu approached the bed, where Li Bing’s mother lay snoring, her mouth wide open.

She opened the glass bottle and poured the herbal juice directly into her mouth.

Li Bing’s mother smacked her lips in her sleep but didn’t wake up.

Ning Shu gently lifted the thin blanket and pulled out an embroidery needle, then used it to prick Li Bing’s mother’s leg.

Older people often suffered from arthritis or joint pain. While it wasn’t a major issue, untreated it could worsen, leading to bone deformation and unbearable pain.

Pain es from blockage, and prolonged blockage only makes things worse.

After pricking her leg, Ning Shu heard a faint groan from Li Bing’s mother, but she didn’t wake up.

She also pricked her hand before tucking the blanket back and leaving quietly, closing the door behind her.

The ghostly disturbances from earlier had already caused a stir in the village.

So this time, Ning Shu didn’t pull the sheet back over her head and just carried it home instead. She washed the dried blood off her face and quietly made her way back to her room.

The next day, the village was abuzz—not with talk about Ning Shu, but about the ghostly events of the night.

Many people who had gone outside to relieve themselves fainted in fear. It was their spouses who woke up in the morning, found that their partner was missing, and went out to find them.

Some had still been lying on the ground with their pants down when they were found.

The details spread quickly, with witnesses insisting they’d seen something floating, its feet pletely off the ground.

Meanwhile, Wang Ying’s mother, who went to feed the chickens, discovered a headless hen lying stiff in the coop.

Furious, she opened her mouth to curse, but Wang Ying’s father interrupted.

“Enough. Don’t make a scene. Boil some water and pluck the feathers. Let’s just cook it.”

He didn’t want their family to bee the village laughingstock over one chicken.

Still fuming, Wang Ying’s mother begrudgingly prepared the chicken.

At lunch, the chicken meat was a rare treat. Wang Chao immediately reached for the meatiest drumstick.

But Ning Shu smacked his hand with her chopsticks, leaving a red mark on the back of it.

“Wang Ying, what’s your problem?” Wang Chao glared at her angrily.

Ning Shu took the two drumsticks, giving one to Wang Ying’s mother and one to her father.

“You eat them.”

She figured she’d be leaving soon anyway. She wouldn’t be returning during the duration of this task.

This oppressive environment was unbearable.

Wang Ying’s father hesitated, his expression plicated. “You eat it. I don’t need it.” He handed the drumstick back to Ning Shu.

Wang Ying’s mother, however, gave hers to Wang Chao, who grinned smugly at Ning Shu.
