No matter the time, power was always a strong guarantee.

The strong possessed not only transcendent wisdom but also strength.

In fact, what Ning Shu revered the most was strength, absolute strength.

Lianqiao returned. As soon as Ning Shu heard her footsteps, she stopped cultivating.

Lianqiao pushed open the door, curtsied to Ning Shu, and then said, “Miss, I found out a little something.”

“I was chatting with Xiaoqing, the maid currently serving the young master, and she said he hasn’t been doing much. He spends his days either reading, practicing calligraphy, or admiring the scenery of the residence.

“Miss, I’m not exaggerating when I say our residence has the most beautiful scenery among the noble families. Even the young master praised it.”

Ning Shu touched her chin. The marquis’ residence was indeed large, with exquisite rock gardens and landscaped areas, all built with money.

What was Gu Fanlu wandering around doing all day?

“The young master truly is a fine-looking man. Xiaoqing even wants to serve him forever.

“Now that he’s entered the capital, he might secure a government position. His future is limitless.”

Lianqiao kept rambling on while Ning Shu listened quietly.

In her mind, she was already thinking that she’d probably be out feeding mosquitoes again that night.

There were many people in the marquis’ household, and information was prone to leak in it, but those people were all household servants, many of whom had served the family for generations.

Their fates were tied to the marquis’. Though one couldn’t rule out someone taking a desperate gamble, most people still had their wits about them.

But now an outsider like Gu Fanlu had shown up, and before long, the downfall of the marquis’ household would arrive.

Everything descended into chaos then, and no one knew what happened to Gu Fanlu, especially since he had moved out of the residence right before the incident.

Ning Shu really didn’t want to suspect Rabbit Gu, but every logical analysis pointed to him.

Speculate boldly, verify carefully.

Ning Shu believed it was Gu Fanlu who had written the treasonous letter, and it was he who had discovered the golden ancestral hall and informed Zhuo Cheran.

“Miss, do you think the young master will take Xiaoqing with him when he leaves?” Lianqiao’s eyes sparkled as she gossiped.

Ning Shu responded firmly, “No. Definitely not.”

Taking another family’s maid would reflect poorly on his character. It wasn’t like he couldn’t afford his own servants. He wouldn’t do something so disrespectful to his hosts.

Lianqiao curled her lips. “Xiaoqing’s practically wagging her tail. She looks like she’s ready to leave with the young master any second. But he clearly doesn’t want her.”

Ning Shu curled her own lips into a smirk and teased, “Well, you never know. If my cousin really likes Xiaoqing, he might tell the old madame that his new residence lacks a maidservant. I’m sure the old madame would be more than willing to send one over, maybe even a few of the other servants, too.”

Lianqiao’s mouth fell open. “Miss, do you think that’s really possible?”

“No.”

If Gu Fanlu truly wanted to cut ties with the marquis’ household, he wouldn’t make such a request.

Lianqiao burst out laughing with glee. She was clearly taking pleasure in someone else’s misfortune.

“You have a grudge against her?” Ning Shu couldn’t help but ask when she saw Lianqiao’s expression.

“We used to share a room, and Xiaoqing wasn’t exactly honest. She had sticky fingers,” Lianqiao replied.

Ning Shu didn’t say anything more and asked her to go prepare dinner. After a long day, she was starving, and especially after drinking a stomachful of pond water.

Lianqiao brought in a light meal. After Ning Shu finished eating, she let Lianqiao help her get ready for bed.

As soon as Lianqiao left, Ning Shu sat cross-legged and began cultivating again.

At midnight, Ning Shu snuck outside Gu Fanlu’s room. He was already asleep.

She quietly pushed open the window and crept inside.

Gu Fanlu’s breathing was shallow, so much so that Ning Shu suspected he might not actually be asleep.

She made her way to the desk where Gu Fanlu usually read and began searching for samples of his handwriting.

She wanted to know exactly what his writing looked like.
