In short, he had been a quiet, overlooked person, yet he survived in the end.

He’d probably ascend the throne now.

This was enough to make plenty of jaws drop.

“That fifth prince sure has incredible luck,” Marquis Xuanping said with a sigh.

The crown prince and the other adult imperial princes were dead, along with Zhuo Cheran, who had rebelled.

What kind of chaos had unfolded in between, no one could say for sure.

Ning Shu raised her eyebrows. “You really think it was just luck?”

“It truly was luck. The fifth prince wasn’t even part of the campaign to suppress the rebellion. Who knew that he’d be the one to take the throne?”

“The fifth prince holds no grudge against Marquis Xuanping’s household. His being emperor wouldn’t be so bad.”

The marquis exhaled in relief. As long as it wasn’t Zhuo Cheran who ascended the throne, anything else was acceptable.

“There are still other princes in the inner palace, right? Even though they’re not of age, they have powerful maternal families and could gain enough support to vie for the throne,” Ning Shu added.

Marquis Xuanping nodded. “This whole affair won’t be resolved anytime soon.”

Now that Zhuo Cheran was dead, her task was considered plete.

When Yin Qing heard of Zhuo Cheran’s death, she stood there, dazed. Her face was blank. Zhuo Cheran had just died, just like that.

In Yin Qing’s heart, Zhuo Cheran was not someone who could die so easily.

She clutched her chest, feeling a hollowness inside. Tears streamed down uncontrollably. It would’ve been a lie to say she had no feelings for Zhuo Cheran at all.

Especially since he had always been a noble and radiant figure.

Yin Qing felt a wave of despair wash over her, like her soul had been extinguished. It was as though she had lost all her spirit.

What a hopeless era this was.

Here, survival was difficult. There was no such thing as freedom. Even going outside was a luxury.

Trying to gain even a shred of influence in this era was next to impossible.

Ever since news of Zhuo Cheran’s death broke, the Yin family’s attitude toward Yin Qing took a plete turn.

Her concubine-born younger sisters mocked her sarcastically—

“Weren’t you going to marry the prince’s heir? Weren’t you going to bee the prince’s heir’s consort? Now that he’s dead, who are you going to marry?”

The more envious, jealous, and resentful they’d been before, the more they now kicked her while she was down.

Even Yin Qing’s father looked at her with bitter disappointment.

Once his daughter became involved with the prince’s heir, his colleagues started treating him with extra respect.

Some even flattered him, calling him the future father-in-law of the prince’s heir.

He had been counting on Prince Xin’s household to help him get promoted. However, now that Zhuo Cheran was dead, everything had gone up in smoke.

Worse still, his daughter might now be considered ‘damaged goods’, and no one would want to marry her.

If only Zhuo Cheran had succeeded in his rebellion, he could’ve bee the emperor’s father-in-law. But alas, fate hadn’t granted him that.

Yin Guangyuan was pounding his chest in regret.

What a pity.

No matter how disappointed Yin Guangyuan was or how heartbroken Yin Qing felt, what was done was done.

When Zhuo Cheran entered the palace to meet the emperor, he had known it could be dangerous, but he hadn’t expected the emperor to turn on him so suddenly.

The emperor had wanted to send him to prison just as he was about to receive mendation for his victory and prepare rewards for the troops.

Once he was thrown into prison, anything could happen. Even dying behind bars was possible.

What the emperor hadn’t anticipated was that Zhuo Cheran would be bold and ruthless enough to pull a gun and shoot him dead.

After that, as the other imperial princes faced off against Zhuo Cheran, they all tacitly agreed to eliminate him first, then fight over the throne.

Once Zhuo Cheran died, the first to follow was the crown prince, who had been first in line for the throne. With him gone, the others finally had a chance.

What followed was a plete bloodbath. They were like lambs to the slaughter.

The only one left standing was the fifth prince, who had quietly stood to the side the entire time. He never made a move and only ever watched.
