Chapter 3291: It’s like Citizens of a Country Paying Taxes

“Don’t listen to that trash’s nonsense. Once people fail, they find all sorts of excuses. It’s always the world’s fault, never their own, just so they can feel better inside,” 2333 said disdainfully.

Ning Shu: “Oh!”

“When you do tasks, the organization takes a cut of the entrustor’s soul power. That’s not to feed the people above, but to keep the entire organization running.”

Ning Shu propped up her chin. “I’d like to hear the details.”

“That soul power you hand over supports people like the organization’s military—they’re the army of souls that appeared last time in that monster world.

“It’s like citizens of a country paying taxes. That money goes into military training, soldiers, and other public needs. Understand?

“Those armies also consist of souls. They need soul power to grow stronger. Who would do anything without benefit? Would you work for free without pay? Understand?

“When a single task-taker can’t solve something, those people are sent out. Got it now?”

Ning Shu nodded. “Got it.”

If you couldn’t change the rules, you had to adapt to them. Besides, it wasn’t like there weren’t chances to grow stronger. Using the system’s resources, yet calling it slavery…

Don’t just look at what you’ve lost. Look at what you’ve gained.

If you only think about what you’ve lost, your mindset bees unstable.

If you keep thinking about why others have something you don’t, your heart just hurts more, and jealousy burns fiercely.

Didn’t Le Qing ever wonder where all that soul power was going?

It seemed Ning Shu herself had never thought about it either; all her focus had been on finding world origins.

Quibbling over tiny gains and losses was meaningless.

Her whole body aching, Ning Shu lay on the blanket, ready to sleep. Looking at Mei Ziqing sitting like a wooden stump, she said to Lar: “Cover her with a blanket too.”

After speaking, she closed her eyes. She was too tired; her body couldn’t take it anymore.

Lar draped a blanket over the stump-like Mei Ziqing, then added another on top of Ning Shu.

The night air was a little cool, but there was no danger nearby. After all, within fifty miles, no living beings remained.

At night, it was dead silent.

Ning Shu woke from the pain in her back. Opening her eyes, it was already dawn. Lar was pouring potion onto her wounds.

Lar’s expression was heavy. “The wound area is too large. It could get infected.”

Ning Shu gave a casual “Oh.” She’d take some more anti-inflammatory medicine later.

She looked over at Mei Ziqing. She was still sitting there, motionless, hair damp with dew.

Ning Shu went over and nudged her. “Alright, that’s enough.”

Mei Ziqing said to Ning Shu, “My legs are numb. Help me up.”

Ning Shu: …

She reached out and pulled her up. Her legs were stiff, and moving them made them ache with pins and needles.

“Are you okay?” Ning Shu asked, seeing her pale face, lips pletely drained of color.

Mei Ziqing waved her hand. I’m fine.

She walked around a few times until her legs felt better, then sat down beside Ning Shu.

Ning Shu handed her a flatbread. She took it and asked her, “Are your wounds any better?”

“Nope. My whole back is ruined. You need to pensate me,” Ning Shu said, her words somewhat unclear since she was chewing the bread.

Mei Ziqing said, “Once we’re back, I’ll find the best medicine for you.”

Seeing she seemed back to normal, Ning Shu asked: “You got past it?”

“I need some time. A person disappeared forever—no next life, nothing. It’s gotta take some time. Even wounds need time to heal.”

Mei Ziqing looked at Ning Shu. “Thanks for this time.”

“No need. Just give me back a privilege ticket. I also got three soul-anchoring pills which were fifteen merit points,” Ning Shu said bluntly.

Mei Ziqing nodded. “Of course. It’s only right. You came to help me; it wouldn’t make sense for you to take a loss.”
