When she was called in for questioning, Ning Shu simply emphasized that her relationship with Song Yi was clean and proper. There was no inappropriate conduct between them.

She told the political missar that he should plete a thorough investigation before punishing her.

Just from thinking with her toes, Ning Shu could guess that it was Wu Xianrou who had gone back and made a scene in front of her father.

She must have told him that Song Yi had an improper relationship with his subordinate, and that no matter what, she couldn’t marry someone like Song Yi.

However, Wu Xianrou’s father was genuinely interested in making Song Yi his son-in-law. He ordered an investigation into the matter instead of changing his mind right there and then.

Since his daughter claimed that Song Yi had questionable conduct, he figured he’d investigate and find out whether the rumors were true. If the oute proved that Song Yi was clean and self-disciplined, then his daughter would have no reason to refuse the marriage.

In short, as the most powerful matchmaker between Song Yi and Wu Xianrou, he was determined to eliminate all obstacles and make the two of them end up together.

Ning Shu understood clearly. Still, no matter what, regardless of whether Song Yi ended up with Wu Xianrou or not, she would not allow herself being accused of things she didn’t do or being dragged into things for other people’s sake.

Some things, like pride and convictions, were simply not to be defiled.

With calm posure, Ning Shu said, “Squad mander Song and I have a strictly professional superior-subordinate relationship. There is no inappropriate conduct between us. You’re wele to ask around.”

After the interview, Ning Shu returned to her training.

But then she received a mission—this time, it was to plant a listening device.

The target location was a high-end private club.

Inside a VIP private room at the club, an official was suspected of colluding with underworld forces and engaging in criminal activity. The listening device was meant to gather evidence.

Normally, missions like this—planting bugs—were tasks assigned to special ops personnel.

Ning Shu accepted the assignment and arrived at the upscale club that night.

The club itself was a shady establishment operating in a gray area.

Ning Shu changed into a waitress outfit. It consisted of fishnet stockings, a revealing bunny girl costume with a pair of bunny ears on her head, and a fluffy tail on her backside.

The uniform was seductive and extremely revealing.

Even so, Ning Shu had to wear it. She let down her hair and put on heavy makeup.

Then, she picked up a bottle of liquor and headed toward the private room.

Several other waitresses in similar bunny outfits went with her.

The lead waitress walked in front and knocked on the door. Only after someone inside gave permission did they enter.

When the door opened, they saw a smoke-filled room. The lighting was dim and suggestive. Inside, several men were laughing and holding women in their arms.

Ning Shu entered with the wine bottle and placed it on the table.

Suddenly, someone smacked her backside. Ning Shu immediately crouched down, and with a discreet motion, slipped the small bug underneath the sofa.

The floor was carpeted thickly, so the device was nearly impossible to spot.

Ning Shu wore a look of flustered panic, pletely playing the part of a young woman who had just been taken advantage of but didn’t dare speak up.

The men in the room immediately burst out laughing lecherously.

“Sorry, she just started recently and hasn’t learned the ropes yet,” the lead waitress said quickly, her tone full of anxiety.

Ning Shu kept her head down. Her body was trembling slightly, and she looked utterly frightened.

“Alright, enough. We’ve got serious business to discuss. Knock it off,” one man said coldly.

“Yes, yes, whatever Young Master Li says goes. I’ll let it slide this time,” the man who had slapped Ning Shu said, as if he were being magnanimous.

If Ning Shu remembered correctly, that man was the official being investigated.

Outside, on television, he always appeared cultured and refined. He always presented himself as a civil servant working for the people and the nation. But now—he was showing his true colors.

People really could be extremely two-faced.

Ning Shu left the room looking meek and scared. To avoid drawing suspicion, she continued performing her duties as a waitress for a while.

Of course, while Ning Shu was at the club, she had her fair share of unwanted groping from the men who came there to indulge themselves.

Making the waitresses wear bunny costumes was all about pleasing these powerful and wealthy men.

Getting felt up was basically unavoidable.

And not only did they have to endure it, but they were also expected to smile through it like they enjoyed it.

Ning Shu kept a close eye on whether the guests in that private room had left. Once they did, she would need to go in as a waitress to clean up the private room and retrieve the bug.

The people in that room kept talking for a long time, saying who knew what. Partway through, they even ordered more things.

Ning Shu avoided going near that room again.

While at the club, she saw men holding multiple women in their arms, rubbing and groping their bodies without restraint.

It was honestly an eyesore. Men…

They acted like all this depravity was just a performance, something they had no choice but to take part in.

People went through all kinds of helpless situations in life.

Only the weak were forced to swallow their pride and bow to all these unwritten rules.

They couldn’t afford to live freely or act as they pleased.

All pain and struggle boiled down to one thing: not being strong enough.

Once the people in the private room finally left, Ning Shu went in to clean up. She reached under the carpet beneath the sofa, grabbed the bug, slipped it into her pocket, and then tidied the room.

After changing out of the bunny costume, Ning Shu went to the floor manager to ask for her pay.

“You made a serious mistake today. Your pay’s getting cut in half,” the manager said bluntly, docking her wages on the spot.

Ning Shu: …

She honestly felt like crap. She’d been groped and now even her paycheck got docked. Seriously, what the hell.

“You’re ridiculous. I’m never working here again,” Ning Shu said angrily.

The manager replied darkly, “Look at the mess you caused. If I hadn’t smoothed things over for you, who knows which man you’d be under right now? And you’re calling me unreasonable?”

Ning Shu felt like she’d just been absolutely screwed over. With a furious expression, she snapped, “I’ll never e back, even if you beg me. Hmph!”

She stormed off in a huff. She needed to make a clean exit, so no one would trace anything back to her later.

Other people might not notice a waitress showing up for just one day and then vanishing, others might not notice, but Ning Shu couldn’t afford to leave loose ends regardless.

She left the club and headed to a van parked not far away. She slid the door open, then climbed in. Inside was the surveillance equipment.

Ning Shu asked, “What did we manage to pick up?”

“It’s all recorded. We’ll send it to the higher-ups,” her colleague replied while removing their headset.

With the mission pleted, it was time to head back.

After returning to the unit, Ning Shu took a shower. As she towel-dried her damp hair, she flipped through a technical manual.

Her phone rang on the desk. It was a call from Zhu Yi. She picked it up.

“What have you been up to lately?” Zhu Yi asked. “Do you even know? Song Yi and Wu Xianrou are actually getting married. It’s official now.”

Ning Shu froze for a moment, then sighed and asked, “What’s the story?”

“Political missar Wu personally brought his daughter to visit the squad mander in the hospital,” Zhu Yi said. “He formally introduced her to Song Yi, hoping they’d get to know each other. He told them to spend time together.

“I’m pretty sure it’s a done deal. When the political missar himself steps in, there’s no easy way to refuse. Miss Wu’s been at the hospital every day taking care of the squad mander.”

Ning Shu stared silently up at the ceiling. How could anyone break fate’s pull?

If two people were meant to be together, they’d end up together in the end.

She asked Zhu Yi, “So why’d you call me?”

“To let you e over and watch the show! I’m honestly speechless,” Zhu Yi said.
