The baby pulled her fur, slept on her, and generally did whatever she wanted to her. Ning Shu felt truly miserable about it.

It became a total nightmare once the child reached crawling age.

She had been in this world for quite some time now. She wondered if it was time to leave. A dog’s lifespan was not long, and the more time she occupied this body, the shorter the dog’s remaining life would be.

However, it seemed her task was not finished yet, as 2333 had not notified her to leave.

There must be something else left for her to do.

What exactly could it be?

Ning Shu felt a sense of apprehension. Who was going to have an accident? Ying Zhi, Chen Hong, the baby, or was something going to happen to Beibei herself?

Everything was full of unknowns, and she could not predict what would happen in the future.

Her daily routine consisted of guiding Ying Zhi to work and then sitting by the crib to watch the baby once they were home. Occasionally, she would use a paw to bat at the toys on the crib to amuse the child.

The baby would babble and giggle. After two months, she had grown fair and chubby, with eyes that darted around curiously.

She was a beautiful child. Ying Zhi was not ugly, and Chen Hong had regular features, so their daughter ended up looking even better than both of them.

It was a pity that the parents could not see what their child looked like and had to rely on touch to get a sense of her.

Chen Hong and Ying Zhi did not dare grow their fingernails out at all. They were terrified that because they could not see, they might accidentally scratch the baby if they were not careful.

This little girl was truly fortunate. Not all parents were capable of loving their children, and there was no law saying they had to.

Babies were especially frustrating when they cried, and they were not as obedient as adults.

Yet, Ying Zhi and Chen Hong deeply loved their little princess.

As Ning Shu rocked the crib, her nose twitched. She seemed to catch a scent—the faint, nearly imperceptible smell of gas.

Ying Zhi, his wife, and his mother-in-law were currently eating.

Ning Shu suspected a gas leak, so she hurried into the kitchen to check if the gas tank was leaking.

She put her nose near the tank and sniffed. The smell was much stronger here. Ning Shu immediately began to bark loudly at the gas tank.

“What’s wrong, Beibei?” Ying Zhi fumbled his way into the kitchen. Once inside, the smell of gas was quite pungent. He immediately said, “Mom, did you forget to turn off the gas?”

Chen Hong’s mother rushed into the kitchen. Only then did she remember. “I was simmering soup on the stove.”

Ning Shu gave a bark as if telling her to turn off the gas first.

Chen Hong’s mother tightened the valve and opened the window.

A house like this was an enclosed unit. A gas leak was terrifying. If a spark were struck, the entire room would explode, destroying everything inside. It would be even worse if people were hurt.

It seemed like Chen Hong’s mother was suffering from some memory loss. She was being increasingly scatterbrained, often forgetting things she needed to buy when she went out and having to make second trips.

This was not the first or even the second time this had happened.

“Ah, I’m getting old. I’ll definitely be more careful next time,” Chen Hong’s mother said apologetically.

“It must be because taking care of the baby is too exhausting. You should rest. If you want to eat something, I’ll buy it from outside. You don’t need to cook every day on top of looking after the child,” Ying Zhi said.

“My head truly is spinning from all the work,” she replied. “Fortunately, nothing happened.”

It was lucky that Ying Zhi did not smoke. If someone had tried to light a fire, there would have been a disaster.

Ying Zhi fumbled around to open all the windows in the house to clear the smell, then went to check on his daughter.

“Then we should use the stove less often from now on,” Chen Hong said.

Ning Shu sighed inwardly. This was the difficulty of two blind people living together.

However, if a sighted person were tasked with constantly caring for someone blind, they might start to see it as a burden. They would not support and empathize with each other the way Ying Zhi and Chen Hong did.

Ning Shu looked at the mother-in-law’s pale face. She seemed uneasy and guilt-ridden because of her mistake.

At her age, helping to look after her granddaughter was likely taking a physical toll on her.

Ying Zhi noticed this too. He told her she did not need to use the stove to cook anymore and only needed to help watch the baby during the day.

She agreed readily, promising to be more careful and tighten the valve if she ever did have to use the stove.

Ning Shu decided that after dropping Ying Zhi off at work every morning, she would head back home to keep an eye on things.

She would only leave to pick Ying Zhi up when he was ready to finish his shift.

It would make things a bit difficult for Ying Zhi when he needed to use the restroom, but he could always ask someone for a hand. Ning Shu felt that the woman and child left alone at home were in greater danger.

She did not know exactly what was ing, but for a dog to offer its soul as payment, it certainly would not be anything simple.

Ning Shu delivered Ying Zhi to the massage shop, barked at him, and prepared to head home.

Ying Zhi patted her on the head. “Beibei, you’re so good. Thank you, Beibei.”

He pulled a dog treat out of his bag, tore open the packet, and gave it to her.

It was a little beef-flavored bone.

Ning Shu felt like she was actually falling in love with the taste of dog food and treats.

She wandered back toward home. As she passed through the town square, a husky charged toward her. Its eyes were wide, and its tongue was flapping in the wind like a wave.

Get lost, you crazy dog!

Ning Shu charged right back at it, sent it flying with a kick, and then disappeared from sight.

The husky: …

It had encountered a new panion, one that always seemed noble and aloof. Seeing her alone today without an owner, the husky had wanted to get close.

Instead, it had been kicked quite a distance away.

The husky scrambled up, prepared to chase after Ning Shu, but its owner pulled tightly on the leash and dragged it away.

Ning Shu reached home and pawed at the door, but no one opened it.

She barked loudly, but there was no reaction from inside. She lay on the floor and listened through the crack at the bottom of the door. If she could hear the baby’s breathing or the sound of someone walking, then someone was definitely home.

Normally, Chen Hong would not take the baby out because her blindness made it too easy to accidentally hurt the child. At this time, the mother-in-law should have been out buying groceries or other supplies.

Yet, despite her barking for so long, no one had opened the door.

As she lay there, her nose caught the scent of natural gas. It was leaking again, or perhaps it had not been turned off properly.

Where were the people in the house?

What about Chen Hong and the baby?

The door was locked, and Ning Shu could not get in. Without hesitation, she turned and sprinted back to find Ying Zhi.

Ying Zhi was currently giving someone a massage. Ning Shu grabbed his pant leg in her mouth and began dragging him toward the exit.

“Beibei, stop messing around. I’m working.” Ning Shu’s sudden intrusion startled Ying Zhi’s customer.

Ning Shu anxiously dragged Ying Zhi out, barking loudly the entire time.

“Did something happen?” Ying Zhi asked. Ning Shu gave a loud bark in response.

Ying Zhi thought about how Ning Shu had been running home frequently lately. Something must have happened at the house.
