"Let’s eat first, the food is getting cold." Ye Qiu’s eyes were full of love as he watched his daughter.
"Hmm." Ye Chan’s voice was still buzzing, but not as oppressive as before.
After dinner, Ye Qiu washed the dishes and moved a stool to sit in front of his daughter, his expression gentle: "Alright, now you can tell everything."
Ye Chan sighed helplessly, her tone calm: "Dad, how did you find out?"
Ye Qiu chuckled lightly: "You are my daughter, how could I not notice when sothing is off with you?"
He paused, then added: "Besides, it’s been three hours since you ca to my clinic, and during this ti Li Chengyu hasn’t even called to ask if you’ve eaten. When he was pursuing you, he wasn’t this indifferent; even when he was busy, he would still care about you."
Ye Chan’s expression turned desolate: "Indeed, there have been so problems between us. Chengyu has been acting strangely lately, and I suspect that he has another woman outside."
"Why do you think that? Did you discover sothing?"
Ye Chan’s expression was unusually calm: "The perfu scent was wrong. When I asked him, he only said it was from mingling at a social event, but I’ve slled that particular fragrance at least three tis in the last two months. Since I asked him if there was another woman, that scent hasn’t appeared again."
After saying this, she self-mockingly smiled: "Dad, I think my marriage with Chengyu can’t go on."
Ye Qiu was startled: "Is it because he has another woman outside?"
"Not entirely. Three months ago, Chengyu and I went for a check-up at the hospital at my mother-in-law’s request. The doctor said I have a condition, making it very unlikely for to get pregnant. It was from that ti Chengyu started staying out and not coming ho frequently."
"How could there be a problem? Haven’t you always been healthy?" Ye Qiu anxiously asked.
Ye Chan smiled resignedly: "Who can say for sure with these things?"
"But that’s no excuse for infidelity or divorce. With today’s advanced dicine, why not just try IVF?"
"My father-in-law and mother-in-law won’t allow it, saying it would look bad for the reputation of the Li family if people knew."
"And they think Chengyu having an affair is better for the Li family’s reputation?" Ye Qiu grew angry, "Do they still look down on us? Have you been suffering long term bullying at their family?"
"It wasn’t that bad before, but since finding out about my fertility issues, their attitude changed. However, I can’t really bla them, given the large family business that needs a successor." Ye Chan’s expression was forlorn, and her eyes dim.
"Do you still love Li Chengyu?" Ye Qiu asked softly.
"I suppose I do, after so many years of affection, how could I just let it go?"
"What if Li Chengyu brings back an illegitimate child, would you still continue with him?"
"No." Ye Chan answered definitively.
"Dad understands. Since you and Chengyu still have feelings for each other, try to salvage it. But if it can’t be fixed and he remains delusional, then it’s not the end of the world to divorce and leave their family. Our Chanchan is an outstanding woman, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t work in the future, I will take care of you," Ye Qiu said as he stroked his daughter’s head.
Ye Chan chuckled, "Dad, can your small clinic even recoup its costs? Don’t worry, even if it cos to the worst, I’ll stand strong."
"It’s okay even if you can’t stand up. Though dad is old, I’m still physically strong. I can carry you on my back," Ye Qiu said seriously, making Ye Chan burst into laughter.
Tonight, Ye Chan didn’t return to the Li family’s Donghu Villa, but stayed in her room from before she was married. Lying in bed, she discovered that the blanket had been recently sunned, carrying a scent of sunshine.
Even though she knew that the scent ca from the corpses of dust mites, she took a deep breath anyway, feeling imnsely happy, realizing that her dad had been hoping for her return every day. Yet she, the unfilial daughter, had thought her dad was still addicted to gambling and hadn’t visited him for nearly three months.
When Ye Chan got up in the morning, she was full of energy. She didn’t rember the last ti she had slept as well as she did last night, and she was embarrassed to admit that it was the aroma of food that woke her up.
"You’re awake? Go brush your teeth, dad made so porridge and added so Chinese herbs to it. It’s tasty and good for the stomach," Ye Qiu said, glancing over from the kitchen when he heard her voice.
"Eh!" Ye Chan’s mood was noticeably better today, and her complexion looked a lot healthier.
With a warm bowl of hot porridge inside her, she sighed deeply, "Dad, your cooking skills are still as amazing as ever."
Ye Qiu, delighted, said, "If you like it, co back more often. I’ve been experinting with many other dishes lately, you can help taste them."
"That’s a deal then."
Just before leaving, Ye Qiu spoke earnestly to Ye Chan, "Chanchan, go and have a good talk with Chengyu. It’s best if you can clear things up, but if not, call . I’ll go and talk to his family. The most important thing is that you shouldn’t suffer, understand? I’ve seen on the news that so n, when provoked, might turn violent, you..."
Ye Chan, finding it amusing, replied, "Dad, it’s not as bad as you think. Li Chengyu is the general manager of the company, he’s careful about his public image in any situation. I’m headed to the company now, don’t worry, I’ll be fine."
As she sat in the driver’s seat, Ye Chan’s mood dropped, realizing that she wasn’t as relaxed as she thought she would be.
At Donghu Villa, the Li family mbers were silently having breakfast. A sweet-looking, cute girl innocently asked her brother, "Brother, where is sister-in-law? Why isn’t she coming down for breakfast?"
Li Chengyu’s expression turned a bit sour, "Your sister-in-law didn’t co ho last night because she had sothing to do."
"Sothing to do? What was it?" Gao Juan, sitting opposite, raised her eyebrows, her voice sharp.
"Oh mom, just don’t ask," Li Chengyu replied impatiently.
Gao Juan slamd her chopsticks down heavily, "What do you an I can’t even ask? She’s married now, how can she not co ho for a whole night? Tell , where did she go?"
"She said she was going to her dad’s place after work yesterday."
"Her dad’s place? To give money to her gambler father again?" Gao Juan’s tone beca even more dissatisfied, "Initially I thought she was a good match, but now it seems we’ve married a calamity. Her father gambles, and the daughter can’t even have children. What kind of misfortune has our family brought upon ourselves?"
"Mom, what you’re saying is too harsh. Sister-in-law is a really good person, and she’s so capable. How is she not a good match for my brother?" Li Xinyi retorted with a pout.
"Not a good match at all. Chengyu, when will you make things clear to her? Our family can’t have a daughter-in-law who can’t bear children," Gao Juan asserted confidently.
The family elder, Li Pengcheng, nodded, "Son, you know our family’s current situation. I don’t want to say much about your affairs, but our Li family must have a descendant."
