"I bet Brother Gao is interested in that woman."

The others glanced up, then quickly lowered their heads again.

"So what if he is? Getting us a sister-in-law isn’t a bad thing, right?"

"Hmph, that woman getting close to Brother Gao isn’t with pure intentions. She’s after our coal. We worked hard to collect it to sell at a high price in the north, but ended up selling it cheaply to her.

We can make a bit, yeah, but compared to the northern prices, it’s a huge loss."

They say heroes have a hard ti resisting beautiful won, and Little Si Zi is deeply concerned about Brother Gao’s future.

Lin Gao turned around, making sure others couldn’t see his gestures.

"I know you’re selling coal to at a loss. Don’t worry; I won’t let you lose money. In the future, if you brothers want a al, just co find . I’ll cook for you."

Lin Gao stared at her, hesitated for a mont, then scratched his ear.

[The food you made last ti was delicious.]

Last ti, it was the pork chops made at the factory director’s ho.

For people of this era, being able to make pork crispy on the outside and juicy inside is definitely morable.

Jiang Lai nodded, then pulled out a tal lunch box from her shoulder bag.

"You an this, right?"

As the lunch box opened, a familiar aroma wafted out.

Inside, the fried pork chops were neatly lined up, the at a bit red, looking sowhat undercooked.

"They’re best fried like this, give it a taste."

Jiang Lai handed over the chopsticks.

Lin Gao glanced at Jiang Lai, didn’t hesitate, took the chopsticks, and picked up a piece to taste.

The rich texture made his eyes light up, and when he looked at Jiang Lai, he looked a bit like a little mutt tied to the door, guarding the house.

[It’s delicious.]

"All yours. If you like it, just tell next ti."

Long-term cooperation benefits both sides, after all.

A few als are nothing, Jiang Lai is quite willing to make the effort.

Lin Gao didn’t return to the table to eat. After tasting a piece, he closed the lid again and put the tal box back into his bag.

[I’ll return the lunch box next ti.]

When making gestures, he always watched the other’s eyes, constantly checking if Jiang Lai understood him.

Luckily, Jiang Lai could easily understand his intentions every ti.

Even more so than his childhood friends.

After delivering the goods, Jiang Lai called out to Jiang Li.

"Alright, Ali, let’s go ho."

Jiang Li was over there gnawing on lamb spine with the others, his mouth full and sweating.

"Sis, can you make a pot of this for next ti? It’s so good!"

Lamb spine isn’t sothing locals usually eat, so most of the lamb vertebrae are used for soup, which isn’t very flavorful, but better than nothing.

But the way Jiang Lai made it retained a lot of the flavor while neutralizing the gaminess of the lamb bones with spices. It was addictively good, especially with so drinks, making everyone enjoy it thoroughly.

"Aren’t you leaving? I’m heading ho."

Jiang Li, with his mouth full and red, didn’t want to leave the half-eaten lamb spine. Chewing away, he waved his hand.

"You go ahead, sis. I’ll head back once I’m done."

Jiang Lai rolled her eyes at his hopeless look and turned to leave.

Footsteps sounded behind her.

She turned around and saw a slender figure following behind, silent enough not to be noticed.

Seeing Jiang Lai turn, Lin Gao, holding a kerosene lamp, paused for a mont before casually catching up.

"What are you doing here?"

[It’s dark at night; I’ll escort you ho.]

These days, with the overcast skies, a thick fog covered the night, the moon hidden completely.

Jiang Lai looked at the road ahead, dark as pitch, then back at the warm yellow glow behind. Though not afraid, she didn’t refuse.

Lin Gao didn’t walk side by side with her, always keeping just a bit ahead with the lamp.

With his height and long strides, he adjusted his pace when Jiang Lai fell a little behind.

Jiang Lai was enveloped in his shadow.

At the doorstep, Lin Gao nodded and turned to leave.

"Thank you for walking ho, here, take this."

Jiang Lai pulled a handful of red prawn crisps from her pocket and handed them to Lin Gao.

"Do you often feel dizzy and tired? It’s nothing, have more sweets."

Lin Gao was a bit surprised.

He didn’t expect Jiang Lai to notice so much.

People were quite simple back then. Seeing his expression, Jiang Lai just laughed, ready to turn away, when suddenly Little Buding hushed.

"Go to the back gate of the yard, there’s a good show."

Jiang Lai could never resist a good show, and knowing Little Buding’s nature, what he called a good show was surely very exciting.

Looking back, Lin Gao was still standing there with the kerosene lamp, showing no intention of leaving.

"You should go back; I’m ho now."

Lin Gao nodded, turned, and left. Once the lamp’s glow faded, Jiang Lai walked along the wall to the backyard. Reaching the door, she heard unusual hums and groans.

Jiang Lai had good vision. Even in the dark, she could see clearly with Little Buding.

So hugging the wall, she spotted the couple huddled in the corner imdiately.

A man and a woman, the woman pressed against the corner, occasionally letting out uncontrollable sounds.

Wow, they’re bold, risking getting caught for hooliganism here.

"It’s Shen Ping."

Jiang Lai recognized him by his build.

"Who’s the woman?"

"How would I know, but from the clothes, likely a restaurant apprentice."

Jiang Lai nodded and quietly turned away.

"Aren’t you going to stir things up? Such a good chance to get Shen Ping, the Crown Prince, into trouble."

"Relax, this won’t be the last ti. The weather’s bad these days; there’ll be more chances to cause a stir."

Besides, it’s late at night. By the ti she made a move, they’d have run off long ago. Better to observe for now.

The next morning, Jiang Lai’s door was banged on with "bang bang bang."

Opening it, sure enough, it was Shen Yan, with her usual arrogant expression, but this ti accompanied by soone familiar to Jiang Lai.

The head of the neighborhood committee, a balding middle-aged man in his fifties. In this place where people were thin and pale from hunger, his belly stuck out like a bloated balloon.

He managed the entire street and had so authority in this old neighborhood.

Jiang Hai was also outside, looking quite haggard from the recent troubles, having lost much of the weight on his face.

"What’s up?"

Seeing Jiang Lai’s attitude, the head imdiately put on airs and coughed.

"Step out. There’s a eting, and your family is to be severely criticized."
