"No way!"
Alice Turner hadn’t responded yet, but Sophia Wood had already spoken up. As soon as she spoke, the other four people present all looked at her, though their expressions were different—so were surprised, so puzzled, and so unhappy. However, so were happy.
Isla Lane was unhappy about Sophia Wood’s interruption, but she was also puzzled inside, not understanding why her in-law would do such a thing. Wasn’t this holding them back?
"In-law! What do you an by this?" She couldn’t directly say that what her in-law did was inappropriate, so she had to ask indirectly what she ant.
"What my mom just said reflects my own thoughts, because she used to advise to quit my job and not go out to work, but I always refused. I even said that if she kept pushing to quit, I’d never return to this ho." This ti Alice Turner spoke before Sophia Wood could. Sophia indeed advised her not to work outside anymore, and Alice indeed refused every ti, but Sophia didn’t force her to quit, nor did Alice ever say she’d never return ho.
She mixed half-truths and half-lies just to take all the responsibility upon herself. She didn’t want her mother-in-law and her mother to be at odds, nor did she want others to bla her mother. She even less wanted others to complain about her mother.
The others were unclear about this, but Sophia Wood was crystal clear. She understood that Alice Turner was protecting her and explaining her previous words on her behalf. Just as she wanted to say sothing more, Alice suddenly spoke again: "Quitting my job and returning ho is absolutely impossible. I am a fully capable woman, I can support myself."
Her underlying ssage was, I don’t need your family to support .
"I agree with Alice’s opinion. Nowadays, won should be like this—self-reliant, independent, not relying on n, much less on family." Alexander Shaw spoke before Isla Lane. What he said were his true feelings, and he wasn’t just complinting Alice Turner. Her independence was the trait he admired most.
Alice Turner didn’t expect Alexander Shaw to speak up for her, and a rush of gratitude arose within her. "Thank you, dad, for your understanding and support."
She could see that he was speaking sincerely, without any pretenses.
"No need to be polite within a family."
Alexander was particularly satisfied with having Alice as a daughter-in-law. He felt that not only was she independent and capable, but she was also poised and courteous, without any hint of pettiness or affectation.
Such a daughter-in-law, he felt, was a great asset to the Shaw Family. However, his son seed not to appreciate her, which worried him greatly.
Isla Lane, however, had different thoughts from Alexander. She believed that won should stay ho to support their husbands and educate their children, while earning a living was a man’s responsibility. "Alice! I think you should quit and co ho. It’s hard on you out there. Watching you work so hard every day makes my heart ache."
Although she knew it was unlikely, she still wanted to say these words, hoping her daughter-in-law would reconsider. Ultimately, a woman should return to the family, as she couldn’t possibly struggle outside all her life.
"Respect the child’s wishes. As elders, we should help them, not force them to make decisions," Sophia Wood replied to Isla Lane on behalf of Alice once again. She hadn’t realized this before, but ever since she listened to Alice, she had suddenly co to her senses.
