The three surviving Harbingers moved with predatory patience, circling Lucas like wolves sensing wounded prey. His legs trembled from soul form exhaustion, sweat and blood mixing on his face as he fought to stay upright. The sidearm in his hand felt pathetically inadequate against creatures that could shrug off lightning strikes.

"Sir, stay behind us!" Rodriguez barked, sliding across the scorched concrete to position herself between Lucas and the nearest Harbinger. Her demolitions expertise had evolved into sothing far more tactical—she pressed both palms against the ground, sending waves of molecular destabilization radiating outward in defensive patterns.

"Hassan, get the Commander so water and stims," Vasquez commanded, her sound wave abilities creating a focused barrier of sonic pressure that made the air itself into a weapon. "Torres, I need communications to all remaining teams. We’re forming a defensive periter."

Lucas tried to object—he was their commander, not so VIP to be protected—but Morrison cut him off with military precision.

"With respect, sir, shut up and let us work," the ice-awakened soldier said, flash-freezing the ground beneath the Harbingers’ feet while creating crystalline barriers that would channel their advance into kill zones. "You’re our heavy artillery. We keep you alive, you cook these bastards when you’re ready."

The nearest Harbinger tested Morrison’s ice barriers with a casual swipe that shattered frozen walls like glass. But Davies was ready, his gravitational abilities tripling the alien’s effective weight just as it committed to the attack. The creature stumbled, its enhanced mass throwing off its balance for exactly the opening Patel needed.

Thorned vines erupted from the rocky ground, not to entangle but to wound—dozens of razor-sharp botanical spears driving upward into the Harbinger’s legs and torso. The alien roared, swatting at the plants, but dan was already moving.

"Flash burn, incoming!" he shouted, unleashing a concentrated stream of white-hot fla that turned Patel’s vines into instant kindling. The burning plant matter stuck to the Harbinger’s natural armor like napalm, creating chemical burns that ate through even its tough hide.

Hassan slid up behind Lucas, pressing a water bottle and combat stimulants into his hands while keeping one eye on the tactical situation. "Drink this, sir. Your pulse is erratic and you’re dehydrated from the electrical discharge."

"Status report," Lucas managed between desperate gulps of water, his more than average human tabolism already working to process the stimulants Hassan had provided.

"Three hostiles remaining," Torres replied, his communication abilities allowing him to coordinate with scattered team mbers while dodging a swipe that would have removed his head. "Teams Alpha and Beta are regrouping on your position. Team Gamma is providing overwatch from the facility roof."

The second Harbinger launched itself toward their defensive line with enough force to crater concrete. Williams, despite his broken ribs, threw himself into the creature’s path—not to stop it, but to redirect it into Jackson’s prepared kill zone.

"Blood razor formation!" Williams shouted, manipulating red projectiles in the air while his teammates created overlapping fields of destruction. The Harbinger hit Davies’ gravitational well at triple weight, stumbled through Morrison’s ice spikes, and erged directly into Jackson’s crystalline death trap.

Mineral spears erupted from every surface—walls, ground, even the facility’s tal infrastructure bent to Jackson’s will as he ford lance-points of hardened stone and twisted steel. The Harbinger’s natural armor deflected most of the attacks, but enough penetrated to slow its advance and create openings for more focused assault.

"Molecular acceleration on my mark," the Team Delta specialist called out, her hands glowing with energy that could increase atomic movent in targeted areas. "Vasquez, I need sonic disruption on its inner ear for targeting."

"Copy that," Vasquez replied, creating focused pressure waves that disrupted the Harbinger’s equilibrium while her teammate began cooking the alien’s left shoulder from the inside by accelerating molecular motion in its muscle tissue.

The choreographed violence was beautiful in its precision. Every soldier knew their role, every ability complented the others, every movent designed to protect Lucas while systematically dismantling alien opponents that should have been beyond human capability to defeat.

"Sir, your vitals are stabilizing," Hassan reported, her healing abilities working overti to repair the damage Lucas’s soul form had inflicted on his own physiology. "I can get you back to eighty percent in maybe three minutes."

"Don’t have three minutes," Lucas replied, watching the third Harbinger position itself for a coordinated assault with its companions. These aliens were learning, adapting their tactics to counter human abilities. "They’re going to rush us simultaneously."

Rodriguez caught the tactical assessnt imdiately. "All teams, overlapping fields of fire. Make them pay for every step forward."

The assault ca from three directions at once.

Team Alpha’s Harbinger ca in low, using Morrison’s ice barriers as cover while closing distance for devastating close-combat strikes. Team Beta’s target went airborne, launching itself in a high arc designed to land behind their defensive line. The third alien charged straight forward, accepting punishnt to break through their coordinated abilities.

"Torres, call it!" Lucas commanded.

"Multiple sonic bursts!" Torres transmitted to all teams. "Molecular acceleration on the airborne target, gravitational well on the charger, everything else on the flanker!"

The coordinated response was a thing of tactical beauty.

Vasquez hit the airborne Harbinger with focused sonic pressure that disrupted its trajectory while Team Delta’s molecular specialist began cooking its internal organs from inside. The creature’s flight path beca an uncontrolled tumble as its nervous system overloaded from rapidly heating brain tissue.

Davies expanded his gravitational field to maximum range, turning the charging Harbinger’s montum into a liability as its effective weight increased exponentially. The alien’s feet cracked concrete with each step, but its speed dropped to human levels just as Patel’s botanical network activated.

Root systems that had been growing underground for the entire battle erupted simultaneously, creating a three-dinsional maze of thorned obstacles that channeled the Harbinger directly into Jackson’s prepared crystalline kill zone.

The flanking Harbinger found itself facing the concentrated fury of Rodriguez’s molecular destabilization, Morrison’s thermal shock tactics, and dan’s white-hot fla projection all simultaneously. Its natural armor began to fail under the multilayered assault, alien flesh cooking while its molecular bonds destabilized.

"Hassan, Williams needs dical attention," Lucas called out, seeing the blood-awakened soldier collapse as his broken ribs finally overco his pain tolerance.

"On it," Hassan replied, her healing abilities working to stabilize Williams while maintaining her support of Lucas’s recovery. "Soone cover Williams’ position in the formation."

Patel imdiately shifted his botanical attacks to fill the gap, sending waves of razor-sharp plant growth toward the flanking Harbinger while maintaining his root network against the charging alien. The young soldier’s face was pale with exhaustion, but his tactical awareness remained sharp.

"I’ve got Williams’ sector covered," he reported. "But I can’t maintain this level of growth much longer."

The airborne Harbinger finally crashed into the facility wall, its uncontrolled descent creating a crater in reinforced concrete. But it was already recovering, alien physiology adapting to the molecular heating that should have killed it outright.

"Team Delta, that thing’s still active," Lucas warned, his own strength returning as Hassan’s healing and the combat stimulants did their work.

"Not for long," Team Delta’s electromagnetic specialist replied, working in concert with her molecular acceleration teammate to create a focused field of destruction. The combination of superheated tissue and electromagnetic disruption finally overwheld the alien’s adaptive capabilities.

The second Harbinger collapsed as its nervous system literally cooked inside its skull.

But the remaining two were learning from their companion’s death. They began coordinating their attacks, using their superior speed and strength to separate Lucas’s soldiers and force individual combat scenarios.

"They’re trying to break our formation," Torres observed, barely dodging a swipe that would have decapitated him. "We need to maintain unit cohesion."

"Easier said than done," Morrison replied, creating ice barriers as fast as the Harbingers could shatter them. "These things are adapting faster than we can compensate."

Lucas felt his strength returning, the combination of Hassan’s healing and military-grade stimulants bringing his capabilities back online. His electrical reserves were rebuilding, soul awakening becoming possible again within minutes.

"Hold formation for two more minutes," he commanded. "I can get back into soul form if you give ti to recharge."

"Copy that, sir," Rodriguez replied, pressing both palms against the ground and sending waves of molecular destabilization that created temporary obstacles. "All teams, fighting withdrawal to the facility entrance. Overlapping cover, nobody fights alone."

The tactical retreat was executed with urgency. Each team provided covering fire while others moved, abilities coordinated to create maximum damage while maintaining defensive positioning. It was textbook small unit tactics adapted for superhuman warfare.

They were actually winning.

That’s when sothing dropped out of the sky with enough force to crater the facility’s main courtyard.

The impact sent shockwaves through the ground that knocked several soldiers off their feet. Dust and debris erupted outward as a massive form materialized from what must have been a terminal velocity drop.

But this wasn’t another single-horn Harbinger.

This creature stood nearly twelve feet tall, with three horns arranged in a crown formation above predatory features that spoke of intelligence and cruel amusent. A massive scar ran diagonally across its chest—a wound so severe that even Harbinger healing couldn’t completely erase the tissue damage. It wore what appeared to be a combat skirt of so alien material, and when it spoke, its voice carried an accent that sounded almost... theatrical?

"Well, well, well," the three-horn said, brushing dust from its elaborate outfit with casual elegance. "What have we here? A little military exercise? How absolutely *delicious*!"

The remaining two single-horn Harbingers imdiately prostrated themselves before the newcor, their aggressive posturing replaced by submissive deference.

"Allow to introduce myself, my dear little soldiers," the creature continued, its accent becoming more pronounced with apparent excitent. "I am Xallon the last thought, and I must say, you’ve put on quite the performance! Oh, the fun we’re going to have together! I do so enjoy watching humans display their... creative... approaches to dying. It’s going to be absolutely exquisite watching each of you discover your limits!"

The alien’s smile revealed rows of serrated teeth, and its eyes glead with the kind of anticipation a predator reserves for particularly entertaining prey.

Lucas’s soldiers instinctively ford up around him, weapons raised despite knowing their Ravager rifles would be useless. The tactical situation had just shifted from difficult to impossible.

"Sir," Rodriguez asked quietly, her voice steady despite the overwhelming odds they now faced. "What’s the plan of attack?"

Lucas looked at the three-horn Harbinger, at his exhausted soldiers, at the facility that offered no real cover against sothing that could drop from orbit and walk away.

He sighed deeply.

"Run."
