The stream chat did not slow down.
It had been running at a pace that broke the display’s scroll function since the hatchlings dropped from the clouds, and two minutes later it was still going, the viewer count climbing past numbers that the faction’s dia team would spend three days analyzing.
[EclipseFanatic: HE HAS AN ARMY OF BABY STORMS???]
[StreamGremlin: STORM IS A DAD???]
[TacticalObserver: wait storm is male how did he]
[GhostViewer44: can male dragons reproduce??? soone explain]
[NightshadeX: nobody knows anything about dragons except Noah and he’s not talking]
[EclipseFanatic: bro ca back from two years away with a whole air force]
[StreamGremlin: the way they just descended from the clouds like that. Aura farr behavior]
Noah walked through the settlent toward where the rest of the faction had gathered, dusting plaster off his other sleeve. A faction mber moved to intercept him with the energy of soone who had a very important question, looked at his face, and decided the question could wait.
He found Seraleth first.
"Anywhere else you need help?" he asked.
She looked around the settlent. At the ch units finishing their work. At the cleared periter. At the rhinosaur crater where the hatchlings were still doing what they were doing with considerable enthusiasm.
"We have it," she said.
He nodded and walked to the settlent’s edge and stood there with his arms folded and watched his hatchlings work and let the faction do what the faction did.

The ride back was loud in the way that rides back from successful operations were loud when sothing unexpected had happened and everyone was still processing it through conversation.
"Storm had babies," Marcus announced, to the transport in general. "That’s what happened. Storm had babies."
"Storm is male," Reyna said.
"Maybe he isn’t," Marcus said. "Maybe we assud."
"Noah called Storm he. Consistently. For months."
"People make mistakes."
"About their own dragon’s gender?"
"I’m just saying sothing produced those things and they look exactly like little Storms and I’m working with the information available."
A newer recruit near the back of the transport, soone who had joined in the last year and had never seen Storm in person, raised her hand slightly. "Could a male dragon and another dragon have—"
"We don’t know enough about dragon biology for this conversation," Kelvin said from the front. "What I know is that there are now approximately twenty miniature lightning wyverns that answer to Noah Eclipse and they ca from sowhere and I intend to ask him directly when he is in a state where direct questions are appropriate."
"When will that be?" soone asked.
Kelvin looked at the window.
"I’ll let you know," he said.

Back at headquarters Sophie found him in the corridor outside the training wing, standing at the viewport looking at the harbor floor below.
She stood beside him for a mont.
"How are you doing," she said.
"Fine," he said.
She looked at his reflection in the viewport glass. He was looking at the water.
"Noah."
"I’m fine, Sophie." His voice was not cold. Just flat in the way that things were flat when they had been compressed into a manageable shape and were being kept that shape through continuous effort. "I’m good."
She did not push it. She stood with him for another mont and then she put her hand briefly on his arm and walked away, because Sophie understood the difference between soone who needed to be reached and soone who needed to be left alone and she had learned which one he was in these monts.
He stood at the viewport for another minute.
Then he went to find Sam.
---
Sam ran Eclipse’s coordination the way Sam ran everything, which was quietly and completely, the kind of competence that did not require announcent because the evidence of it was everywhere you looked. He was at his station in the coordination center when Noah arrived, three screens running simultaneously, a headset around his neck.
He looked up when Noah ca in and waited.
"I need training posts," Noah said. "Reinforced. I’m talking about taking consistent hits from sothing category five level without structural failure. Six of them, spread across the lower training bay, spacing of about thirty feet between each."
Sam pulled up a schematic without asking for clarification on any of it. "Material spec?"
"Composite cat 5-reinforced if we have it. If not, whatever is closest."
"Tiline?"
"When it’s ready," Noah said. "No rush."
Sam nodded and made a note and did not ask what they were for, because Sam had been with Eclipse long enough to understand that so requests ca with context and so ca without and both were legitimate.
"One more thing," Noah said. "I need a eting. Top level. Sophie, Lucas, Sera, Kelvin, Diana, Lila, you. Conference room, whenever everyone is available."
"I’ll set it up," Sam said.
Noah left.
---
They were all there within the hour.
The conference room had been upgraded since the old headquarters, the table larger, the holographic display in the center running live data feeds that updated continuously. Sam had a notepad. Diana had coffee. Kelvin had arrived thirty seconds before Noah and was still catching his breath.
Noah sat at the head of the table and looked at them.
"Sit rep," he said. "Where are we. All of it."
Lucas went first, because Lucas always went first in operational briefings, it was simply the order things fell into when Lucas was in the room.
"Kruel is still at large," Lucas said. "We have been tracking energy signatures across four star systems using the teleportation residue from his last incursion. Kelvin’s satellite network has expanded the detection range significantly."
"The Greys contributed three orbital platforms," Kelvin added. "Lucas’s family ca through on that. We can now detect large-scale energy displacent on a star system scale, which theoretically ans we would have approximately seventy-two hours warning before another incursion of Kruel’s scale."
"Theoretically," Noah said.
"Theoretically," Kelvin confird. "The margin of error is still being refined."
"Current location?"
"Unknown," Lucas said. "The signatures go cold at the boundary of a sector we do not have coverage for. He is out there. We just cannot see him from here."
Noah looked at the table for a mont. "Anything else?"
Sophie and Seraleth exchanged a look across the table. Seraleth cleared her throat.
"There is sothing," she said. "Miss Brooks reached out three weeks ago. We’ve made her our "Contact" given she’s a senior EDF personnel and..." Sera took a pause to clear her throat, " Our contact passed along sothing that ca through ergency channels from a mining colony in Sector Seven, Red Hollow,"
Noah waited.
"There has been a confird sighting," Seraleth said. "Of a five horn Harbinger."
The room was quiet.
Noah sat with it for a mont. Then he said, "Anything else?"
Everyone at the table looked at him.
Kelvin leaned forward. "Noah. A five horn."
"I heard you."
"I don’t think you’re—" Kelvin stopped. Started again. "Kruel was a four horn. Kruel killed nearly five million people in seventeen hours on a planet with active military defenses and multiple alpha-rank awakened responding. He did not even try. He was collecting information." He put both hands flat on the table. "A five horn is not a larger version of that. It is a different category of problem. We are talking about sothing that makes Kruel look like a preliminary exercise. If this thing reaches a populated system—"
"I hear you clearly, Kelvin," Noah said.
The room stayed quiet.
"What do we know about war," Noah said. It was not a rhetorical question but it did not require an answer either. He looked around the table. "Our enemies are always going to be strong. That is how this works. If they were not strong there would be no stakes and if there were no stakes there would be no reason any of us are sitting in this room." He looked at Sam. "Get that thing ready. The training posts."
Sam wrote sothing down.
"Thank you for attending," Noah said, and stood up.
He walked out.
Behind him, Kelvin looked at the door for a mont and then looked at the rest of the table.
"I genuinely do not think any of you fully understand what a five horn ans for every living thing in this universe that was not born with a horn on its head," he said. "I want that noted for the record."
Nobody disagreed with him.
---
Noah walked the corridor alone.
His mind was not on the five horn. It was not on Kruel or the satellite network or the seventy-two hour warning margin or any of the things that were objectively the most important things to be thinking about.
It was on the notification that had been sitting at the edge of his vision since the dieval tiline, the one he had not opened fully, had not looked at directly, had been keeping in his peripheral awareness the way you kept sothing in your peripheral awareness when you were not ready to look at it head on.
He stopped in the corridor.
He opened his status screen.
