"Two defending each base," Noah analyzed, pulling up the tactical map. "Classic split strategy. Ready to move, Kelvin?"

"Just let activate one last defense subroutine..." Kelvin's fingers danced across the holographic interface. "There. Now we'll know if anyone so much as breathes near our flag."

"Be careful," Lila's voice ca through their comms, that edge of intensity still present. "Martinez's team has Samuel. His strategic modeling is nearly perfect."

"Nearly," Cora snorted, hefting her plasma cannon. "Got anything for Taylor's bunch?"

"They're still attempting the cliff route," Lila reported clinically. "Poor choice. Limited cover, predictable trajectory. They won't be a problem." Her avatar shifted slightly, rifle barrel tracking sothing only she could see through her scope. "I have angles on all approach vectors."

Noah tried not to think about how quickly she'd mapped those killing fields. "Okay, Kelvin and I are moving out. Cora, you're primary defense. Lila..." he paused, choosing his words carefully. "Focus on protecting the flag."

"Of course," Lila replied, her tone honey-sweet. "I'll keep everything safe." The unspoken 'especially you' hung in the air.

Noah and Kelvin crossed the bridge at a sprint, their avatars' footsteps eerily silent in the simulation. The battlefield between bases was a maze of rocky outcrops and artificial barriers, perfect for cover and ambush.

"Martinez's base is closer," Kelvin whispered, unnecessary in their secure comm channel but fitting the mont. "Want to try there first?"

"Yeah. Samuel might be good at strategy, but—" Noah ducked as energy fire sizzled overhead. "Contact!"

They dove behind separate rocks as return fire peppered their position. Kelvin's avatar peaked around the edge, then quickly pulled back as a shot nearly took his head off.

"Taylor's other two mbers," he reported. "They must have given up on the cliff assault. I count... wait, where's the second one?"

The answer ca as a grenade arced over their cover. Noah's eyes widened. "Move!"

They rolled in opposite directions as the explosion turned their hiding spot into virtual debris. Noah ca up firing, his shots forcing one opponent back. Kelvin wasn't so lucky – the second attacker had used the chaos to flank him.

"Damn it!" Kelvin's avatar flickered as he took a hit to the shoulder. "Shield at 40%!"

Noah was already moving, laying down suppressing fire as he charged toward his friend's position. The flanking attacker had to break cover to line up a finishing shot on Kelvin.

It was the last mistake that avatar would make in the ga.

A single shot rang out from their base. The attacker's form pixelated and vanished.

"Target eliminated," Lila's calm voice reported. "Kelvin, move three ters left. Noah, two tangos approaching your six o'clock. I don't have a clean shot."

Noah spun to face the new threat, mind racing. "Kelvin, that terminal to your left! Can you—"

"Already on it!" Kelvin slamd his palm against a hidden access panel. The ground beneath the approaching enemies shifted, virtual panels sliding away to create a chasm. Both avatars tumbled with surprised shouts.

"Four down," Cora counted through the comms. "Plus the two from before. Six out of twelve."

"And the rest are hiding in their bases," Kelvin added, checking his injury. The shoulder pixelated occasionally but his avatar's functionality seed unimpaired. "Camping their flags."

Noah nodded. "Then let's go hunting. Lila, status at ho?"

"All clear," she replied. "No one will touch our flag." Her voice softened. "Or anything else that matters."

Noah suppressed a shiver. "Right. Kelvin, you good to move?"

"Born ready. Let's go find out if Samuel's strategy is as perfect as they say."

They moved deeper into enemy territory, acutely aware of Lila's scope following their progress for as long as she had line of sight. Noah tried to focus on the mission, on the ga, on anything except the growing certainty that this wasn't really about capture the flag anymore.

For so players, it never had been.

___

Just before approaching Martinez's base, Noah pulled up their score display while they had a mont of cover.

[FLAGS CAPTURED: 2]

[TEAM JENSEN: ELIMINATED - FLAG SECURED]

[TEAM TAYLOR: ELIMINATED - FLAG SECURED]

"Not bad," Kelvin whispered, checking their periter. "Three out of five possible flags. Just Martinez's." He grinned at his friend. "We make a pretty good capture team."

"We should get going," Noah suggested.

"Wait," Kelvin said as they crouched behind cover near Martinez's base. His avatar's eyes glowed faintly as he processed the virtual environnt. "I can see the network layers. Can't modify them, but... there. They've got a classic defense grid. Automated turrets at these points." He marked several spots on their tactical display. "But there's a blind spot in their coverage."

Noah studied the pattern. "Can they see the blind spot?"

"Nope. It's in their system's architecture. They probably think they're fully covered, but the targeting algorithms have a three-degree gap in their overlap."

"Perfect." Noah checked his weapon. "How many defenders?"

"Two heat signatures. One high, one low. Samuel's probably got overwatch while Martinez guards the flag directly."

They moved carefully, using Kelvin's insight to slip through the defense grid's blind spot. "Any óf my abilities would run through them right now. Void blink, oh how I have missed you,"

But this was virtual reality. His ability wouldn't work here.

He'd have to rely on pure skill.

"Now!" Noah signaled, and they burst into action. Kelvin threw a flash grenade high while Noah rolled low, firing at the spots they'd identified. Samuel's avatar appeared exactly where predicted, disoriented by the flash. Two quick shots, and he pixelated into nothing.

"Flag's in the lower chamber!" Kelvin called out, ducking under return fire from Martinez. "I'll keep him busy!"

Noah sprinted for the objective, hearing the firefight behind him. The flag pulsed with red energy, its capture field humming. Simple enough to—

"Proximity alert!" Lila's voice cut through their comms. "Multiple hostiles approaching our base. Different team, not the ones we engaged. Four signatures."

"Adrian's team," Cora confird, the sound of her plasma cannon charging coming through the channel. "All of them at once. Bold."

Noah grabbed Martinez's flag just as Kelvin eliminated its last defender. Their score counter ticked up, but he barely noticed. "Fall back to base!"

They ran, pushing their avatars to maximum speed. Kelvin kept checking their tactical display. "They're good," he muttered. "Really good. Look at their formation – perfect coverage, no gaps."

"Lila," Noah called. "Status?"

"Engaging." Her voice was tight with concentration. "They're... they're blocking my shots. Moving in patterns. I can't – Adrian has them coordinated perfectly."

Energy fire lit up their comms' background. Cora cursed. "They're inside! How did they—"

"Focus on Noah," Lila interrupted. "We need numbers and he's almost back. If we can protect—"

"The flag!" Cora shouted. "Lila, they're at the flag! Stop watching the approach and—"

The notification flashed across their interfaces: [FLAG CAPTURED - TEAM ALBRIGHT]

"No," Lila's whisper was haunting. "No, he's not safe yet. I have to—"

More notifications:

[PLAYER ELIMINATED: CORA]

[PLAYER ELIMINATED: LILA]

Noah and Kelvin reached the bridge just in ti to see Adrian's team completing their perfect assault. Three female avatars moved in synchronized patterns, covering each other flawlessly while their leader directed from the center. They'd split Lila's focus, used her obvious fixation on protecting Noah's approach to create openings.

"Well," Kelvin said quietly, "at least we got two flags?"

The last thing Noah saw before Adrian's team eliminated them was their flag being carried away, and the scoreboard showing their defeat. A defeat that, he realized, ca down to one critical flaw: Lila had been so focused on protecting him, she'd forgotten they were supposed to be protecting sothing else.

The simulation faded to black, and Noah wondered if the real world would be any different.

[SIMULATION TERMINATED]

[CAPTURED FLAGS SURRENDERED]

[WINNERS: TEAM ALBRIGHT]

[FINAL SCORES RECORDED]

The mont their visors ca off, Cora rounded on Lila.

"What the hell was that?" Her voice cut through the quiet murmur of other teams removing their gear. "We had a perfect defensive position. Three flags captured. And you threw it all away because you couldn't stop obsessing over—"

"I was protecting our team," Lila replied serenely, smoothing her hair as if they were discussing the weather.

"You were protecting Noah!" Cora's fists clenched. "The flag was your priority. The mission was your priority. But instead, you let Adrian's team walk right in because you were too busy watching Noah's approach like so kind of—"

"That's enough."

Miss Brooks's voice wasn't loud, but it carried enough authority to freeze both girls mid-argunt. She walked between them, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. Her eyes swept over the team before settling on Noah.

"Eclipse," she said, "Your team demonstrated excellent offensive capabilities today. Three flags captured shows promising tactical execution." She paused, her red lips curving slightly. "However, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link – or in this case, its most... distracted defender. Get your team together." With that, she turned and walked away, leaving tension in her wake.

Cora let out a frustrated sound and stomped toward the exit. "I hate losing," she muttered, shoving the door open with more force than necessary.

Kelvin had already drifted back to the visors, examining their neural interface components with undisguised fascination. "The sensory feedback on these is incredible," he mumbled, clearly choosing to focus on technology rather than team drama. "The way they sync with the autonomic nervous system..."

Noah watched them all scatter before turning to Lila. "We need to talk about what happened in there."

"Hmm?" Lila bounced slightly on her toes, beaming at him with that unnervingly bright smile while her boobs tremored beneath her uniform. "What do you an?"

"You know what I an. The mission, the flag, your... focus."

"Oh, that!" She giggled, reaching out to pinch his cheeks playfully. Noah managed not to flinch, but it was a close thing. "I'm sorry we lost. I failed to protect you properly, but don't worry – it won't happen again." She winked, her eyes sparkling with sothing that didn't quite match her cheerful expression. "I'll do better next ti!"

Before Noah could respond, she spun away and practically danced toward the exit, humming softly to herself. He watched her go, that familiar unease settling in his stomach.

'What is wrong with her?' he wondered, absently rubbing his cheek where she'd pinched it. The spot tingled, and not in a good way. First the core extraction incident, now this... Lila's behavior was becoming increasingly erratic, increasingly focused on him, and increasingly concerning.

The worst part was, he seed to be the only one who saw just how wrong it all was. Cora was angry about losing, Kelvin was lost in his tech world, and Miss Brooks... well, she clearly saw sothing, but her cryptic advice didn't exactly help.

Noah sighed, gathering his things. He had a feeling things were going to get worse before they got better. The only question was: how much worse?

And more importantly: what would Lila do next?
