Chapter 400: Hollow Land

(Several days later, inside an inn.)

“Hmm…” Rael stared at the pop-up, holding a bottle of whiskey in his hand.

He took a few sips, gurgled them a little, and then spat them out directly onto the people in front of him.

Coincidentally, they didn’t protest. After all, how could they? The earlier brawl had lasted only a few seconds since Rael had knocked them all out with a single finger.

Rael turned toward the side, eting the banged-up Frederick’s eyes.

“You alright?” Rael asked with a sigh. “I have to leave in a bit. Not sure when I’ll be back, but probably by the ti the next missions starts.”

Although Frederick was drunk, he was still a Grade 3 being, so after wobbling for a few monts, he channeled mana throughout his body. Less than a second later, he burped, causing all of the alcohol to be flushed out as well.

“I’ll be fine, Aster,” Frederick replied. “Thanks for showing up. We’ll be drinking for another week or so. Feel free to drop by if you’re around.”

Of course, by ‘we,’ he ant the Starlight Division. They were currently in the far end of the inn, drinking everything they could find.

What was more surprising was the fact that even Mathieu had shown up. However, he wasn’t much of a drinker, so he got a glass of orange juice instead.

Though I wonder why he hadn’t asked anything after I left Roger’s place, Rael thought. I was expecting him to at least ask what I wished for. But oh well… Guess we’re not that close.

Anyhow, Rael gave his final goodbyes to the captain and the rest of the division before making his way out of the inn.

He walked along the dark streets of the Silver City until, eventually, he arrived in a deserted alleyway.

And right on cue, a row of pop-ups appeared in front of him.

Hollow Kingdom, eh? Rael whistled. I wonder if Kareth is going to recognize . Probably not.

He waited patiently, and when the tir finally hit 0, Rael’s vision darkened.

A strong pulling force enveloped him, and it was much more forceful than any other teleportation he had experienced. But at the sa ti, it was much faster.

Within seconds, his vision returned, and with it, the realization that he was in a vast battlefield that didn’t have a single tree or building anywhere in sight.

But dust, ash, and blood were everywhere. He could see a few blades of green grass, but not for long, as soone was teleported directly onto the blade of grass, crushing it.

Most importantly, the completely empty black sky with a single massive red moon. He really was back in the Depths.

A mont later, more teleportations ensued, with thousands of people arriving every single mont.

Finally, after nearly 15 seconds, Rael felt like no more people were coming, and instead, an ominous pressure enveloped every single one of them.

Most of the people present kneeled because of the pressure, but Rael was only slightly affected. He lowered his head, but didn’t kneel.

And like that, he spotted blood dripping down his nose, landing on the ground with a surprisingly loud splash.

Not even a mont later, several loud splashes echoed. As he glanced around, he saw bodies lying motionless on the ground, blood spurting from every single part of their bodies.

“Kugh… what the fuck is going on?” a skinny man muttered, pushing Rael aside and stepping forward.

He extended his hand and summoned a blood javelin. Yet as he was about to throw it into the sky, his head expanded rapidly, then exploded, spurting blood all over Rael.

Co on… Rael grumbled, wiping the blood off his face. I got these clothes just yesterday… ungrateful bastards…

Even so, there were many such people who recklessly tried to step forward and do sothing, yet nothing worked. In the end, they only managed to get themselves killed.

But as Rael thought this would continue forever, the pressure suddenly subsided, followed by a red pop-up appearing in front of him.

More than half were killed? This might be a bit more serious than I expected, Rael thought with a hum and straightened his posture.

He quickly wiped away the blood from his nose, and then, he glanced at a particular figure hovering in the air.

It was Kareth with his overly long crimson hair. He blankly stared at each of the candidates on the battlefield, his blue eyes scanning each one.

Eventually, his eyes landed on Rael. His gaze lingered for a few seconds, then moved on to the other candidates.

And eventually, Kareth coughed twice, then spoke, his voice echoing throughout the entire battlefield.

“I am pleased 11,421 of you managed to make it here. This is an event I had hosted in hopes of finding a successor,” Kareth announced. “You have all been chosen to undergo a series of trials that will determine who is worthy of inheriting the Hollow Throne.”

With those words, silence ensued, but it didn’t last long as one of the candidates raised a question.

“Uhh… Sir? While we don’t know who you are, you do seem very powerful. Are you picking a successor because you’re about to die?”

“Hm?” Kareth tilted his head. “I am very hard to kill. And no, I’m only picking a candidate to succeed because I have grown tired of this position.”

He sighed. “Don’t worry about the details. You will find them out in due ti. Just know that if you are chosen as my successor, you will have the glory of learning my techniques, which you may use however you please. The possibilities are truly endless.”
