He did kind of want to tank it, but instead of doing so, Rael simply went ahead and parried it. He really wanted to parry it back at Altros, but he felt like in doing so, he might accidentally kill him.

So instead, Rael parried the attack into the air, and then with a single snap of his finger, he burst Altros's head as well, causing the brother and sister duo to plop lifelessly to the floor and slowly begin to regenerate.
