Now reading: Chapter 591: Iron Unyielding from Re: Blood and Iron, a Action novel by Zentmeister.

In the early morning outside Kassel, Central Germany; Henschel Proving Grounds.

The fog had not yet lifted. Dew glistened on razor wire while concrete bunkers lined the far periter like watchful sentinels.

Hidden among the foliage, SAM sites and flak turrets slept beneath camouflage nets.

Sowhere beyond them, the clatter of tank treads echoed; war drums muffled by mud.

Bruno stood beneath the skeletal gantry of a maintenance rig, arms folded behind his back, the fur-lined collar of his officer’s coat catching the chill.

Around him bustled engineers, chanics, and officers; silent unless spoken to. The only voice that mattered today was his.

The tank before him squatted like a waiting predator—angular, brutal, and unmistakably modern.

It was the prototype designation Panzer III Ausf. A, and today it would speak.

"105mm rifled main gun," said Erwin Aders, who smoked a cigarette while gesturing to the formidable barrel. "Standardized for APDS and HESH compatibility. The bore evacuator has been retooled for high-pressure gas retention. Accuracy rated to 2,200 ters in wind."

Bruno didn’t respond. He ran a gloved hand along the armor instead. The plating was not the usual rolled homogeneous steel. It was layered; slightly matte, with visible seams.

"Composite?"

Aders flicked the cigarette aside and exhaled a thick plu of smoke, as if christening the beast.

"Early generation, yes. Boron carbide matrix over high-hardness steel. While we’re still testing it, we expect production models to co with additional explosive reactive armor blocks along the glacis and skirts. Weight-to-protection ratio is nearly 30% superior to the old Rha, with vastly improved side survivability against shaped charges."

Bruno said nothing at first, only gazed at the monster he’d conjured into steel; his expression unreadable

It was only after the Aders grasped for another cigarette that he finally spoke.

"And the turret?"

Aders did not hesitate to answer while simultaneously lighting up another smoke.

"Henschel design, as you requested. Sloped geotry with integrated autoloader stowage. Power-assisted rotation. Full vampir integration; driver, commander, and gunner optics all aligned through the updated infrared scope suite."

Bruno nodded slowly, eyes still tracing the machine’s lines. It was leaner than the theoretical E-75, lower profile, yet no less imposing. Where older tanks had been blunt instrunts, this was a scalpel encased in armor.

"Start it."

A chanic saluted and climbed aboard. A mont later, the engine snarled to life; deep and throaty, more turbine than diesel. The vibration resonated through the tarmac beneath Bruno’s boots.

Aders’ voice accompanied the beast’s birth in the background.

"Maybach HL234P30," Weber added. "Tuned for high-altitude performance. 850 horsepower at 3,000 RPM. Full hydraulic suspension; adaptable to terrain."

As the vehicle began to speed off with little difficulties, Bruno narrowed his eyes, as if he had so kind of superhuman ability to detect chanical flaws from a re glance.

"Range?"

Yet, to his surprise, Aders confird there were none.

"Three hundred kiloters unrefueled. More with a tethered fuel trailer. She can keep pace with IFVs without breaking a sweat."

These were indeed impressive specifications. Not that Bruno ever intended to field a tank alone without support. Rather, his attention imdiately drifted towards the n who would be driving the beast into battle.

"And the crew?"

A brief pause, and a cock of the neck, followed by a stoic tone.

"Three n comfortably. Four if operating without autoloader redundancy."

The tank began to move onto the testing grounds. Slowly at first; turning its turret, rotating in place, then lunging forward across the proving ground like a beast freed from leash.

Mud kicked from the tracks as it crossed a shell-pocked ravine and clambered up the far incline with surprising grace.

Bruno watched it all in silence. Then he turned to Aders.

"Have you run it against live ordnance yet?"

The man tossed his second cigarette directly towards where his first lay before pointing towards the distance where the hull of another prototype rested with subtle signs of damage in a line with many others.

"We simulated hits from anti-tank rifles, Panzerfausts, and direct 15cm artillery strikes. Hell, we even bounced a tungsten-cored sabot off the lower glacis. It held. Damage to the ERA was superficial in more cases than not."

Bruno’s mouth curled slightly; not quite a smile.

"You’ve done well... When you’ve fully completed testing of the beast and its upgrades, I want the current lineup of Panzer Is and IIs upgraded in a similar way. By the ti the war breaks out, I want our armor to be unstoppable in the field."

Anders hesitated.

"Sir, with all due respect... These Panzers are at least two generations ahead of what the rest of the world is fielding. The Russians may have the E-50 chassis due to joint developnt, but composite and explosive reactive armor, APDS munitions, and Vampir thermal imaging are all a state secret. Even if they turned on us, their tanks wouldn’t last a minute against this. So tell , sir; what are you really preparing for?""

Bruno didn’t respond imdiately. Instead, he gazed into the field and watched a live fire demonstration unfold.

A loud crack echoed across the field as the E-50 fired its first live round. The recoil lifted the hull just slightly; the suspension adjusted in milliseconds. A mock bunker downrange exploded in a fireball of shattered concrete and twisted rebar.

Bruno’s eyes narrowed.

"Have the shell recovered and examined for post-penetration data. I want a thermal cara on the interior impact next ti. As for what I’m preparing for? The next great war...."

Bruno’s words as cryptic as they were, left Anders no more comfortable.

It sounded less like Bruno was preparing for a war... and more like he expected to face the world itself. Even so, all he could do was sigh and nod his head in affirmation.

"Yes, Herr Feldmarschall."

Bruno stepped forward, boots crunching over gravel and frost, until he stood alone before the tank as it rumbled back toward him.

It was not beautiful.

It was not elegant.

But it was sothing far better.

It was prepared.

Just like the war that was coming.

---

Catalonia, 3:12 AM; Sowhere near La Jonquera.

Night had weight in the mountains. Blacker than ink, thicker than breath. No stars. No sound.

Just the quiet gnaw of tension that lingered after too many days of French artillery and too few nights of sleep.

The Republican fortifications stretched like a scar across the Catalonian ridge; earthworks, concrete bunkers, sandbagged nests, and mobile flak wagons converted from old Allied tank chassis.

It wasn’t a Maginot Line, but it was the closest thing the French had built this deep into Spain.

And it was about to vanish.

35,000 feet above. Over the Pyrenees.

A shadow passed across the moon; vast, silent, and unseen.

The P.1108/I "Fernbomber" cruised at altitude, her black body gliding on near-whispered turboprop engines.

Her radar cross-section was near-zero to the equipnt of the era. Her contrails were dispersed by a classified bleed-air disruption system. She was invisible.

And she was not alone.

Trailing her in loose escort, four PTL-7 "Falke" high-altitude fighters kept formation; sleek turboprops with gull-like wings, built for range and speed, not interception.

They flew not to fight, but to watch. No threat would ever reach the bomber’s altitude; not in this age.

Inside the Fernbomber’s pressurized bay, a single crewman read coordinates from a sealed envelope.

He adjusted a rotary dial, and the targeting scope aligned with the dim outline of the French ridge.

No countdown.

No radio chatter.

Just a flip of a switch.

The belly of the beast yawned open. And the payload released.

The belly of the beast yawned open.

What fell was not a single bomb, but a doctrine made manifest.

Four hundred 500-kg thermobaric cluster bombs, each splitting midair into dozens of submunitions; designed to vaporize air, ignite bone-dry terrain, and liquefy internal organs with pressure alone.

Two dozen 1,000-kg deep-penetration fuel-air demolition charges, capable of collapsing entire bunker systems through seismic overpressure.

And at the heart of it all:

One experintal multi-stage warhead, labeled only as "Feuersturm-A1."

Its casing glead dull red beneath the moonlight, stenciled with a line of script in Bruno’s own hand:

"rcy is not a gift. It is a warning unheeded."

Below, the French Line.

The night exploded; not in fla, but in airless annihilation.

The first wave of cluster shells burst mid-fall, blanketing the ridge with a web of superheated mist. A split-second later, the vapor ignited.

There was no fireball. No cinematic explosion.

Just a pulse of invisible pressure so intense that lungs collapsed before eardrums could shatter.

Concrete was crushed, not shattered. n died without knowing they were under attack.

Then ca the heavier charges.

Those landed deeper; delayed-fuse penetrators that burrowed beneath strongpoints before detonating, lifting entire bunkers off their foundations and flipping steel-plated tanks like toys.

The final note was the Feuersturm-A1, which struck near the Republican command post at the rear of the line.

It did not explode.

It consud.

A two-stage aerosol bloom blanketed the valley in a perfect, symtrical do; then compressed with such force that windows shattered eight kiloters away.

All the lights along the Catalonian ridge went dark.
