The chicken, feeling the pain, struggled desperately. It was an old hen of nearly ten jin, and although Madam Ruan was plump, she wasn’t a man; her grip wasn’t that strong. Suddenly, she nearly spilled the bowl of chicken blood beside her.
Watching the scene, Mo Daoyan threw the knife to the ground and took the hen from Madam Ruan’s hands, pressing down on its head, directing the blood into the bowl.
Finally, after the chicken’s blood had drained, and the hen went limp, Mo Daoyan wrapped its head under the wings and tossed it to the ground. They then waited for the water to boil to scald the hen, plucking it clean of feathers and viscera, thereby completing the task of slaughtering the chicken.
Seated in front of the stove, Madam Ruan stoked the fire while brooding over the day’s events, especially Auntie Sun’s sudden departure.
