There were rows and rows of houses, each with two floors. The first floor had a courtyard surrounded by a small wall, and you could see that most of the courtyards were planted with so lons and vegetables.
The second floor seed to have a rooftop garden, because she could see so branches with green leaves peeking out beyond the rooftop railings.

ng Xinian led her to the last building at the end of the first row and took her upstairs.
He took a left turn and stopped in front of a wooden door.

The other doorway had no door, and inside she saw a wooden plank set up as a stove.
She didn’t see a bathroom or toilet—could it be inside?
Chiang Xiao was already becoming restless, wanting to get up and look around.
The floor was cented, as were the walls, without even a coat of white paint.
However, ng Xinian had cleaned it very thoroughly.
She looked at the floor. This kind of smooth cent floor would feel nice to walk on barefoot in the sumr.
ng Xinian brought in a basin of water, with a pink towel with small floral patterns hanging over the side.
"The towel is new, as well as a wash cup and toothbrush. I prepared these earlier."
As he spoke, ng Xinian held his hand up in front of her to show her, "I’ve washed my hands."
He soaked the towel in water, wrung it out, unfolded it, and passed it to her. "The road from the station to the camp was dusty, wasn’t it? Wipe yourself off."
Chiang Xiao glanced at him, pouted slightly, and didn’t move.
Seeing her, ng Xinian quickly squatted down and gently began wiping her face.
"Hmm, look at my little girl’s face, fair and rosy, smooth as a peeled boiled egg."
Chiang Xiao responded, "So eggs can roll, right?"
ng Xinian paused, feeling a bit uneasy inside.
His little girl was still upset.
He continued squatting in front of her, wiping her face, and when he finished, he pulled her hand into the basin.
