Beijing

Early in the morning, Zhang Baoxiang went out to buy a good amount of meat and eggs.

A neighbor bumped into her and greeted her with a chuckle, "Baoxiang, you’ve got such a spring in your step, and you’ve bought so much food! Is there some happy occasion at home?"

Zhang Baoxiang stopped in her tracks. "No big happy event. I just got a call from my brother. It’s time for my dad’s follow-up check-up, and he’s arriving today."

"Then you should definitely prepare well. Make sure to give the old gentleman some good, nourishing food."

After exchanging pleasantries for a few moments, they parted ways.

Zhang Baoxiang brought the basket home and immediately started bustling about. Hearing some noise in the courtyard, she called out, "Bingkun, it’s about time. Go to the intersection and pick up Dad and Big Brother."

Ye Bingkun responded, "Got it."

As soon as Ye Bingkun stepped out, he saw his father-in-law and elder brother-in-law approaching. "Dad, Big Brother," he called out, "I was just about to go pick you up!"

The elder Zhang waved his hand dismissively. "It’s not our first time here; no need for picking up. Besides, your big brother is with me."

Ye Bingkun took the bag from his elder brother-in-law’s hand. "Dad, you seem to have recovered quite well."

The elder Zhang sounded a bit plaining. "I said there was no need to e, but your big brother insisted on making this trip."

Ye Bingkun naturally understood what the elder meant. "Still, it’s best to have the check-up, so everyone can be at ease, right?"

Chattering, they entered the yard.

Zhang Baoxiang, hearing the motion, emerged from the kitchen. "Dad, Big Brother, you’ve arrived! e inside and rest."

Elder Zhang, noticing his daughter’s hands were still covered in flour, said, "We’re not strangers; don’t fuss over us. Go on with your work."

Zhang Baoxiang smiled. "We’ll have dumplings for lunch."

Elder Zhang said, "Just a simple bite is fine. Why go to all that trouble?"

Yet the smile lingering in his eyes betrayed his inner joy.

After Zhang Baoxiang went back to her busy work, the elder Zhang finally spoke, "Bingkun, last time your big brother was in a hurry and didn’t manage to visit your dad. It’s still early, and it’s not too far. How about we take a trip over there?"

Ye Bingkun smiled. "Dad, you just arrived. Rest a bit more. My dad will understand; he won’t mind."

But Elder Zhang was quite insistent, so Ye Bingkun had no choice but to agree. After informing Zhang Baoxiang, he left with his father-in-law and elder brother-in-law.

Ye Bingkun’s father, Ye Sanyuan, was the younger brother of Elder Master Ye (Ye Qingyuan). Both brothers were old revolutionaries. However, Ye Sanyuan had transferred to a local job early on due to an injury.

Later, due to recurring issues from old injuries, he retired early and recuperated at home.

When they arrived, Xia Dongxue happened to be there too. "Second Sister-in-law, you’re here too," Ye Bingkun greeted her.

After Xia Dongxue nodded at him, she greeted Elder Zhang and his son Baosheng. "Uncle Zhang, Baosheng, you’ve e."

Elder Zhang smiled. "Yes, we’ve e to see your father-in-law and Second Uncle."

Xia Dongxue smiled. "What a coincidence! My father is also here visiting Second Uncle."

The two old brothers inside heard the motion. Elder Master Ye pushed his younger brother, Ye Sanyuan, who was in a wheelchair, out to greet them. "Brother Zhang, please e inside," invited Elder Master Ye.

The elder Zhang stepped forward briskly. "I left in a rush last time and didn’t manage to e by."

Ye Sanyuan said with a smile, "We’re all family here; no need for such formalities."

They entered the living room, sat down, and after chatting for a while, the elder Zhang noticed a photo hanging on the wall.

His gaze lingered on Ye Binglan, and he found himself pausing there.

Just then, Ye Wenze, Elder Master Ye’s eldest grandson, walked in. "Grandpa, a letter has arrived from Wenhui."
