"Xinyu, what is this?"

"Auntie, this is yam. You can eat it; cook it, steam it, or roast it."

"Xinyu, we can’t accept it." The yam was pushed back.

"Auntie, keep it to eat. You need to be full to have the energy to work. We live next door. When I’m not at ho, help keep an eye on the house."

"Xinyu, you should keep it for yourself to eat, right?"

"I eat at the canteen. I don’t need it. Don’t refuse."

"Oh! Auntie thanks you. I won’t be polite; there’s really nothing to eat at ho."

"Things will get better soon; the wild vegetables should be sprouting soon. Let’s not talk about it, I need to tidy up at ho."

Jiang Xinyu spent the whole afternoon cleaning the house and discovered so good things in her parents’ room at the Jiang Family residence.

Originally, while wiping the brick bed, she felt that the cabinet underneath was too dirty and wanted to clean it. After a hard ti moving it out, she surprisingly found sothing unusual along the wall by the edge of the brick bed.

Jiang Xinyu squatted down and touched it with her hand. It felt hollow.

She straightforwardly found a hamr to break it open, and inside was a dium-sized ceramic pot.

Jiang Xinyu happily pulled it out; it was quite heavy.

She placed it on the brick bed, opened the seal at the top, and shone a flashlight inside. There were five golden ingots and ten silver ingots. She took them out and displayed them on the brick bed. Then, she began to scoop out silver coins, all were Yuan Datou.

Jiang Xinyu recognized them because her grandmother in the previous life had two, which caused a fight among the uncles and aunt because of them.

Grandma gave them to her aunt, which were seen by her cousin from Uncle’s family, who then told the adults, sparking a big fight. In the end, her aunt tearfully threw the two Yuan Datou at her feet. Xinyu got the chance to witness what Yuan Datou was.

There was even a roll of banknotes, currency from the Republic era, with quite large denominations.

Counting the Yuan Datou on the brick bed, there were surprisingly eighty-nine pieces.

How could there be so many things? Jiang Xinyu racked her brains to recall that when she was a child, her grandfather once said their family used to be landlords, but due to addiction to opium, they went bankrupt and this branch of the family had been living in this small mountain village for decades.

What a pleasant surprise. Jiang Xinyu gleefully packed them away. Maybe there are more elsewhere? Check her own room later; her grandfather used to live there in the Jiang Family.

Resisting the impulse to imdiately go treasure hunting, she insisted on cleaning up this room thoroughly.

She took a cloth to the west room. After looking around initially finding nothing, she decided to move the wardrobe on the floor. And sure enough, she found a different spot and broke it open again. Inside was also a ceramic pot, but much smaller than the previous one.

She lifted it onto the cabinet and opened it; inside were truly valuables, mostly won’s jewelry, mostly gold, along with a pair of silver bracelets and two gem pieces—Jiang Xinyu forgave herself for not recognizing them.

She happily packed these away too. They were hers.

This return ho indeed brought unexpected gains. Suddenly, she recalled there were two Galle Bottles in the east room, which she should also pack away, in case they are antiques.

She worked until four in the afternoon, cleaning the house inside and out.

After so thought, she took out ten yams and so cornal buns, planning to give them to Zhou Lihong. That’s all she could afford.

She ate a bowl of rice, a section of sausage, and a bag of milk.

Feeling not quite full, she added a chicken leg.

While eating these, Jiang Xinyu felt a sense of guilt. Others had no food, but she lived in extravagance.

After simple washing, she tucked herself under a quilt and lay on it.

Thinking about Zhou Lihong, initially she really disliked her. She was like a hedgehog and also Kong ngjie’s gun.

However, seeing her take care of Zhou Jiaxing and her younger siblings, it showed the girl had a good heart; otherwise, Xinyu wouldn’t really help her.

There are many pitiable people in the world, and it’s impossible to help them all. She sympathized with this girl, plus the matter about the Zhou Brothers’ was discovered by herself and told to Wang Jianqiang.

She always felt that if it wasn’t for her, they wouldn’t be living such a life.

The book never explained this, perhaps it never really happened.

However, Wang Ailing’s dad wasn’t the Captain after she got divorced.

Forget it, she just needs to help them a bit, at least let them survive.

The sky was already dark, and the village was utterly quiet.

Jiang Xinyu tied two snakeskin bags together and carried them on her shoulder.

The two families lived quite far apart, taking about ten minutes to reach the Zhou Family’s door.

She knocked and the door opened.

Jiang Xinyu saw Zhou Lihong, took the bags down, placed them on the ground, handed the warm bags in her hand to Zhou Lihong, and turned to leave.

Throughout the whole process, the two said nothing. Jiang Xinyu didn’t want to speak, and Zhou Lihong didn’t know what to say. However, in her heart, she was grateful to Jiang Xinyu because after the incident, only she had helped—this is human nature.

Returning ho, Jiang Xinyu felt as if the mountain pressing against her heart had disappeared, even though these supplies weren’t much, they were life-saving for them.

She didn’t need gratitude, only that her conscience was clear.

The next day, Jiang Xinyu had just eaten a sugar bun when she heard noise outside. She imdiately ran out to open the door. The truck was already half-loaded with firewood.

"Uncle, there’s still a lot at ho."

"It’s fine; you won’t have ti to collect wood in the future. You go ho and have porridge; we two will load the truck."

"I’ll join in."

"You don’t need to." Wang Jianqiang checked the wood shed briefly.

"We’ll load all the firewood for you, it’s neat and saves space; I’ll add a few bundles of branches for you."

"Alright, thanks Uncle."

"You co to my house."

"No need, I’ve already eaten. Uncle, with the truck so full, Sister Ailing and I can’t ride in it, right?"

"Hmm, you should take the bus."

"Uncle, my ho is not far from the police station; I’ll wait by the road for you."

"Alright."

The two were chatting as Wang Xiaolong started loading the truck.

"Where are the snacks you want to take? Put them in the middle."

"Hmm, in the house, I’ll get them."

Half a bag of cornal, two bags of yam.

Wang Jianqiang looked at the yam and frowned, "Don’t leave anything at ho; take it all. You can eat at my house when you co back."

"Uncle, this is all that’s left. I’ve already transported so to the city."

"Hmm, alright."

Wang Ailing arrived at this ti. "Xinyu, shall we go call Kong ngjie? Ask if she wants to co with us?"

"Alright, you ask. I’ll wait at ho." Jiang Xinyu really didn’t want to see the Kong Family.

Ten minutes later, Wang Ailing returned, without Kong ngjie behind her.

"She’s not coming with us; she’s returning in the afternoon. The firewood is loaded now, let’s go."
