It took almost an hour to get from the airport to the Holiday Inn Aurora. Looking at the luxurious five-star hotel in front of her, Hannah nudged Jack with so confusion.
"Are you sure Mr. Wolff didn't give the wrong address? Why would soone being chased stay in such a high-class hotel?"
Jack shrugged. "They're staying in the presidential suite. As a poor person, I really find it hard to understand the thinking of you rich people. Maybe it's just because the towels in high-end hotels are more comfortable?"
"Because Chris wants to please that girl!" Justine's ssage read.
Jack didn't even need to see the screen to sense his annoyance.
Knowing that the two were more like family, Jack knocked on the door while typing back.
"Even if Chris has a love interest, your relationship won't change. You can trust . You don't want Chris to be alone forever, right? It wasn't easy for him to take this step, and as his closest family mber, you should encourage him."
Jack typed away on his phone, while Hannah curiously peeked in. After a long while, the door opened, and Chris appeared before them, looking sowhat lost.
"Hannah, she is my girlfriend. This is Chris, the accountant."
Jack gave a brief introduction and tossed the phone into Chris's lap, who was still in a daze.
"Justine's angry with you. You'll have to appease her yourself."
"Uh!" Noticing a petite girl sprawled on the sofa, Jack glanced back at Chris, who was frantically typing on his phone, and teased, "You didn't book a presidential suite at a five-star hotel, and ended up sitting on the sofa with a beautiful woman all night?"
The sound of their entrance startled the girl on the sofa. She sat up abruptly, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, sowhat embarrassed. Judging from her expression, Jack could guess what they had been doing.
They must have been chatting late, and the girl had fallen asleep on Chris's lap. This guy, a complete novice, probably hadn't experienced anything like this before; he was probably frozen stiff, sitting there obediently until now.
"Jack Tavelor, just call Jack," Jack said, extending his hand.
"Dana, Dana Cummings. Are you Chris's friends?" Dana nervously rubbed her right hand behind her waist before shaking hands with Jack.
It was clear this girl was sowhat socially awkward, and she and Chris were quite a good match.
Jack briefly introduced himself and Chris, not teasing him further; he'd had enough for today. He simply pointed to the corner of his mouth, indicating there was still a trace of lipstick on the accountant's lips.
After Chris finished washing his face and ca out of the bathroom, Jack first told him about his conversation with Ray King.
"He'll be coming from DC as soon as possible, but I hope you don't make a scene too big, or it'll be difficult to handle."
Chris nodded expressionlessly; it was unclear whether he'd heard a word.
"We analyzed the cause of the attack last night. The missing $61 million from 'Living Robot Company' has reappeared on the company's books. They did this to artificially inflate cash flow in order to raise funds for their IPO."
"Dana is the company's cost accountant. She was the one who first discovered the accounting problems. After I found out about the missing profit, their CFO died at ho from an insulin overdose, and then Dana and I were both targeted."
After listening to Chris's analysis, Jack nodded. "So, you think your new employer was the one who attacked you?"
To his surprise, Chris shook his head. "I don't know. The person who suggested hiring to investigate the accounts is Rita Boone, who's in charge of the company's IPO. She's the sister of the company's CEO, Brack Boone. I have to ask her first."
The original script was a bit ssy, and Jack couldn't rember many details. What he rembered most was Chris storming into the boss's house and then killing the boss. That boss should be the Brack Boone he was talking about, not Rita.
What Jack wanted to do was follow Chris closely to prevent the butterfly effect he caused, and to prevent Chris from accidentally shooting his own brother and causing a tragedy.
He had finally managed to make him and Justine more like normal people, and he couldn't lose two such important helpers because of this nonsensical blunder.
"Okay, let think." Jack scratched his head, feeling that he was increasingly showing the potential to be a mastermind.
"Hannah, help protect Dana. If possible, after Ray King arrives in Chicago, et him and go to that robotics company to seize those ledgers and receipts Chris investigated as evidence. Is that alright?"
Dana nodded repeatedly, and Hannah patted the Glock at her waist, indicating that it was no problem.
"Find a weapon. After dark tonight, we'll visit Ms. Rita Boone to confirm who's behind this, and then…"
He looked at Chris.
The accountant naturally added the second half of his sentence: "Shoot him in the head. That's the best way to get Dana out of the chase."
It seed that the petite, socially awkward girl's eyes were practically sparkling. It seed that rescuing a damsel in distress was indeed the best way to win her over. This girl looked like she was practically throwing herself at him. Jack sighed, "Okay, that's settled then."
He had already done his best to turn Chris's emotional intelligence from negative to positive; he couldn't ask for more.
Considering Chris in the original series casually giving away a painting worth hundreds of millions, not many girls could resist such a direct display of affection.
After leaving Ray King's contact information with Hannah and telling the two girls to be careful, Jack and Chris left the hotel and headed to Chris's house in Plainfield.
The small bungalow in front of them was more like Chris's garage than his ho. Jack entered the house; most of the rooms were empty, without any furniture, and the bedroom didn't even have a bed.
"You're still sleeping in the RV?" Jack asked, sowhat surprised. This guy shouldn't have sleep problems anymore.
Chris, who was checking the security cara footage around the house on his computer, explained sowhat awkwardly.
"We don't need this place anymore. Justine and I are preparing to move to LA. I'm worried her condition might relapse, so I wanted to live closer to you. We bought a farm near the San Fernando Valley."
"Professor Harper is going to hand over the research institute to his student; he'll be living with us."
"Are you sure he won't be worried when he sees this thing?" Jack picked up a heavy-duty weapon mounted in the corner of the room.
