The so-called Eugene family indeed boasts a long history in the area. As early as 1846, during the xican-Arican War, Sam Eugene's ancestors followed the invaders to this land.

They cleared land in the valley and established vineyards. However, due to New xico's climate, the grapes were of diocre quality, and from modern tis to the present, no particularly famous wine brands have erged from the region.

The Eugene family, like the local wines, was obscure and small, quietly surviving on the struggling local wine industry.

This situation persisted until the end of World War II, when old Eugene, Sam's great-grandfather and a forest ranger, discovered hundreds of pitifully dressed immigrants in the forest.

So had severely burned eyes, nearly blind, and others were covered in sores. At the ti, people didn't understand radiation sickness, and old Eugene was terrified it was a plague, even believing these people were cursed by the devil.

Years later, however, old Eugene was astonished to find that this group had successfully settled in the mountains. Although those who survived were barely alive, they still had newborns, albeit deford and ugly, with an alarmingly high mortality rate.

Old Eugene always believed that this group was cursed and dared not have much contact with them, until one day, one of them approached him carrying a small bag of gold.

If old Eugene did objectively provide shelter to these unfortunate people, purchasing supplies and food for them in exchange for a substantial paynt, then his son, Sam's grandfather, Budem Eugene, was a complete villain.

In the late 1950s, after several years of a nomadic lifestyle, penniless Budem Eugene returned to his hotown and set his sights on this deford tribe hidden deep in the mountains.

According to Sam Eugene, his grandfather Budem was a very clever villain who spent a great deal of ti dealing with these mountain people.

He quickly discovered the secret of the gold mine, but he had no intention of revealing it. The land wasn't privately owned, and even if he sold the secret, he'd only get a small sum of quick money, far from what Budem expected.

So he had a better idea. As everyone knows, gold panning is incredibly hard work. In the history of the Arican West's gold rush, those who made a fortune were never the prospectors, but rather those who sold them tools like shovels.

Budem wanted to be that shovel seller, becoming the sole partner of these "gold panners" in the mountains.

After a series of bizarre deaths, the strange people in the mountains gradually faded into forgotten legends, while the secret gold mine beca a stable source of inco for the Eugene family.

By the late 1970s, a problem troubling the Eugene family arose. Perhaps due to long-term inbreeding, or other reasons, the number of deford people was drastically decreasing, with a large number of newborns dying, their numbers declining year by year, and a severe labor shortage looming.

If this trend continued, within a few years, perhaps before the gold mine was exhausted, these deford people hiding in the mountains would beco extinct.

Budem was frantic and quickly devised a wicked plan to guide these people in systematically plundering tourists in the mountains.

In fact, the Eugene family had long discovered that these creatures, now degenerated, had sporadically hunted hunters and tourists in the mountains, including so who were treated like wild animals, killing and eating them, which had even sparked the legend of Wendigo in the surrounding area.

Budem, taking advantage of his good relationship with the deford people, proposed a new collaboration: the Eugene family, who already controlled the area to so extent, would select targets, regularly hunt tourists in the mountains, and be responsible for cleaning up the trail afterwards.

The n, on the other hand, would be responsible for killing all the male prey for food and using the captured won as breeding tools to increase the survival rate of newborns.

For half a century, the Eugene family had used this thod to firmly control the cannibal population. All captured won had to undergo a process of 'selection' by Budem and his sons, who then gave them priority in their consumption.

As Budem aged, his sons and grandsons inherited his business.

They built a mountain villa not far from the mines, and this ti of year marked the start of the 'hunting season,' a ti when all the n of the Eugene family awaited the cannibals to deliver their prey and began their revelry.

With a soft thud, Jessie plunged a knife into Sam's groin. Jack's eye twitched; this knife was now useless — a top-quality knife, wasted like this.

Sam, firmly pinned down by Jack, was too pained to even howl, writhing helplessly on the ground like a gutted fish.

Jessie continued stabbing, and Sam died in agony during this process.

"Go wash your hands in the river."

Jack thought to himself. Even if this girl wasn't the lead in so horror movie, she had the potential to be one — she was terrifying.

"What do we do next?" Jessie returned from the river, dried her hands on her pants, sheathed her knife, and found Jack fiddling with sothing in the Wrangler.

"I have a car radio; I'm trying to see if I can make contact."

It was a CB Radio, the most commonly used unlicensed civilian radio in North Arica, typically covering about 20 miles. That distance wasn't enough, but with a simple modification — extending the antenna and slightly increasing the power — Jack could easily do it.

He certainly didn't dare contact the local police; who knew how deeply the Eugene family had infiltrated the area? But there were many amateur radio enthusiasts in the US who frequently used civilian frequencies to chat.

He searched the 27MHz band for a long ti and finally found a frequency used by nearby truck drivers to chat, then sent out a request for help.

Jack revealed no specific information, not even ntioning that he was in Lincoln National Forest. Instead, he pretended to be a tourist nad John Nolan, stranded in the desert due to a car breakdown, and asked for help contacting a phone number.

Less than half an hour later, an unfamiliar voice called out to Jack over the CB Radio. The caller identified himself as Rod Dyer, clearly one of David Rossi's n, using the na of their mutual 'friend,' the serial killer Rosalind Dyer, as a code.
