Nolan's voice ca through the phone: "I think I've seen him."
Just as Jack was rushing across the street with his Glock, two gunshots rang out almost simultaneously from inside the house. Jack's heart tightened, and he shouted Nolan's na while dialing 911 again.
Nolan's voice ca from inside the house: "I'm fine, shot in the shoulder. There's only one person there, by the pool, already shot and on the ground."
Jack shouted into the phone: "This is Officer Jack Tavelor, this is 5439, Chaucer Drive. Officer John Nolan has been attacked and injured in his ho. The suspect is on the ground and urgently needs an ambulance."
Hanging up, Jack continued to shout: "Nolan, be careful, I'm coming in now. Are you alright?"
Nolan let out a painful groan from inside the house. Jack went to the poolside first, Glock still facing the intruder on the ground. He saw a gunshot wound in the man's chest, with blood gushing out with each breath. It was probably a lung shot, and he was likely beyond saving.
Just in case, he pulled out his handcuffs and cuffed the man, leaving him there to bleed slowly. He then turned and went inside to check on Nolan.
Nolan wasn't in good shape either; a bullet had struck his right shoulder socket, causing him to collapse onto the sofa, groaning in pain. The bullet hadn't exited through his shoulder blade, presumably lodged inside.
Jack helped him up, found a towel to plug the wound, and briefly activated his healing skill to slow the bleeding. He didn't dare continue, otherwise, he wouldn't be able to explain himself when the paradics arrived.
After laying Nolan down on the sofa, Jack asked, "Do you know who the other guy is?"
Nolan, panting, replied, "He just claid to be Kyle Montgory, the brother of Alex, the guy I killed a couple of days ago. I t him once when he filed a complaint at the police station. Don't worry about ; his injuries are probably more serious. Go check on him."
"You're such a good guy. I'll suggest the Vatican canonize you," Jack said irritably, grabbing a towel and walking to the poolside. The guy on the ground was now barely breathing.
Jack used a towel to plug the wound again, but this ti he didn't use any healing techniques. He perford CPR perfunctorily, figuring that his colleagues had done the sa thing when soone was shot in the chest in his previous life, so no one should bring it up.
Jack wasn't against blood revenge, but when their positions differed, he could only support eliminating the root of the problem. After all, one's perspective is determined by one's position, and Nolan was his friend.
Less than five minutes later, a night patrol car arrived first. Jack quickly identified himself. The quality of Arican police varied greatly, especially those on the night shift, who were constantly under pressure. Who knew if they would accidentally shoot their own man? Soon after, two ambulances arrived and took away Nolan and the body on the ground.
Twenty minutes later, police cars from the Wilshire Police Departnt arrived one after another. Their own officer had been attacked, and Commander Gray and Zoe were both at the scene. Jack had just finished giving a statent to the night patrol officers when he saw them, greeted them, and briefly explained the situation.
Commander Gray, with a stern face, nodded after listening, which could be considered a complint. Zoe patted Jack on the shoulder to indicate that she didn't mind: "Tim's wife, Isabella, was exposed tonight while eting with drug dealers and is currently missing. Tim and the DEA are still searching for her. Commander Gray and I were at the police station waiting for news."
Jack nodded in understanding and asked, "Do you need to work overti? I didn't fire a shot today, I'm ready for any mission."
Zoe shook her head, indicating no need: "We've already mobilized sufficient manpower. You should go ho and get so rest. If the DEA finds new leads tomorrow, they might arrange a raid."
Jack said he understood and was about to wash the blood off his hands and drive ho to sleep when a male Internal Affairs agent suddenly appeared and stopped him.
"Are you Officer Jack Tavelor? What is your relationship with John Nolan? Why were you at his house today? Do you know the suspect?"
This series of absurd questions left Jack completely bewildered. Is this what the LAPD's Internal Affairs Departnt is like? It seems different from what's portrayed in Arican TV shows; are they treating their own officers like criminals?
"John and I are colleagues and friends. I was driving him ho today when I noticed a suspicious vehicle across the street from his house. I called 911 beforehand and alerted John. The ergency call center should have recordings of both of my calls. I don't understand what your question is implying. I'm tired now and plan to go ho and rest."
Jack's temper was also rising. He felt his handling of the situation today was impeccable. If this Internal Affairs agent intended to harass him, he wouldn't mind going through his union lawyer to cause trouble. Of course, that was all he could do for now. As a low-ranking patrol officer, a clean record was absolutely essential if he wanted to climb the ranks using system cheats. Now was not the ti to venture into the gray area.
Fortunately, Jack's recent performance had indeed been good. Excellent talent would naturally be protected by his superiors. Without Zoe having to intervene, Commander Gray, who had been wearing a dark expression, stepped forward.
"You, stay away from my officers. Jack may be a rookie in his probationary period, but I can say he knows better than you how to be an LAPD officer. His behavior today was perfectly acceptable. If I see you harassing him again, I won't hesitate to file a complaint with your superior, Sergeant West."
Jack's impression of his Black superior improved considerably. Thinking about how his attitude towards Nolan had also improved recently, it seed that Commander Gray's personality was indeed exactly as depicted in the original story – a strict but fair good person. He rembered that Commander Gray had later suffered a serious shooting; if they encountered each other again, he would definitely try to save him.
After roughly cleaning the bloodstains from his hands and body in Nolan's bathroom, Jack checked his system. The parking lot shootout had given him a lot of experience points. Although he hadn't fired a shot today, he had played a major role in the incident. Combined with the small experience points he had gained from previous patrols, he earned another coin, and his experience bar dropped to 15.
Zoe saw Jack co out, greeted Commander Gray, and then, making an excuse to go back to the station, walked out of John's house with Jack. Seeing that no one was paying attention to them, she quietly asked, "Are you sure you're alright?"
Jack was taken aback, then understood her aning and shook his head. "I'm fine. John did it himself today; I wasn't in a state of heightened agitation."
With police colleagues all around, it wasn't a good ti to flirt with their female superior, so the two didn't exchange many words and got into their respective cars.
