After repeatedly having intercourse in Zoe's living room, kitchen, bathroom, and even walk-in closet, two days had passed before Jack rembered there was still an important matter to attend to. He had three days left before reporting to the Wilshire Police Departnt, and he needed to find a suitable place to live within that ti.
Apartnt buildings were scarce in Los Angeles; most were detached bungalows or two-story villas. Although Jack indicated he didn't mind choosing a less safe neighborhood, Zoe and Hannah unanimously objected.
Jack had originally planned to ask Nolan if he minded sharing, but he forgot Nolan had a wealthy friend who was currently living a carefree life in a mansion in an upscale neighborhood.
Ultimately, Jack had to move into Hannah's attic. The advantage was that he saved on rent, and he used the savings to buy a used Chevrolet. The disadvantages were that he had to beco Hannah's full-ti cook and get several teeth marks bitten on his chest by Zoe due to this arrangent.
As for his relationship with Zoe, they agreed to only et once a month until a suitable solution was found.
On his first day as a rookie, in the Wilshire Police Departnt's patrol briefing room, Jack glanced around, spotted a few familiar faces, and, knowing who they were, went straight to the front row table and sat down.
It was like a university lecture hall; the seasoned veterans sat in the back, and the rookies had to sit in the front.
A few minutes later, a dejected-looking Lucy walked in, seeing him as if he were her savior.
Jack beckoned Lucy to sit next to him and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong?"
Lucy began to complain pitifully, "My beat-up car broke down this morning and almost made late. I pushed it for two blocks and ran into so idiot who tried to rob it in broad daylight."
"Just before I ca in, I ran into that nacing Officer Bradford. He threatened , telling not to fall into his hands. He said if he beca my training officer, he'd make my life a living hell. I've really had a bad day."
"Uh..," Jack carefully chose his words, trying to remind Lucy, "While hazing newcors is a tradition, according to Murphy's Law, I think you'll most likely end up in his hands."
"No way" Lucy's mood worsened.
At the last minute before the briefing began, Nolan rushed into the conference room, straightening his uniform and looking around. Seeing Jack and Lucy, he finally breathed a sigh of relief and sat down next to them.
Before Lucy could ask anything, a middle-aged African Arican police officer walked in. He was Commander Wade Gray, the duty commander of the Wilshire Police Departnt.
Sure enough, it was ti for the pairing of training officers and rookies. Lucy was assigned to Officer Bradford, while Nolan was assigned to Talia Bishop, an African Arican police officer.
Jack, on the other hand, was assigned to a Latina police officer, Angela Lopez, who sat next to Hannah. Seeing him look in their direction, Hannah winked smugly.
The briefing ended, and everyone left the eting room. Jack glanced at Nolan, who had been kept behind by Commander Gray for a private talk, and silently mourned for him for three seconds. Commander Wade Gray, also middle-aged, held a prejudice against this oldest rookie in Los Angeles history. Nolan still had a long way to go to gain the commander's approval.
....
"Do we even need this car anymore?" Jack frowned at the Chevrolet police car in front of him, while Angela Lopez looked disgusted, as this was her car.
They had just arrested a lesbian couple suspected of burglary; driven by psychological thrills of drugs or sothing, they had broken into soone's ho and made a ss of the bathroom.
Jack had locked the two in the back seat of the police car and only chatted briefly with Angela Lopez before the two started ssing around in the back seat again.
After finally getting them back to the police station and locking them up, looking at the ss in the back seat, the two reluctantly put on gas masks and rubber gloves and began cleaning.
"I feel like I've lost sothing. I'm not the sa person anymore. Every ti I close my eyes, all I can think about is that awful scene from earlier. Why can't all the lesbians be beautiful won like in the movies?" Jack complained as he drove.
"Don't ntion what happened again, or I'll give you the lowest possible rating for today," Angela Lopez warned, spraying a whole can of disinfectant into the back seat and glaring at him.
Jack complied, turning his head and making a zipping motion over his mouth.
Angela Lopez looked slightly different from what Jack rembered; her features were softer, and her large brown eyes were very distinctive. However, it was clear that being a patrol officer was tough, as her skin was a bit rough.
She had a tomboyish personality, speaking and acting decisively, completely different from the female officers who worked in clerical positions.
"Turn right ahead. There's a food truck in the neighborhood park over there; we usually eat lunch there," Angela directed Jack to turn the corner.
After parking the car, Jack took out a large lunchbox he had prepared before leaving that morning from the trunk and walked towards the makeshift tables next to the food truck. The other two rookie teams were already waiting for them.
"How was your morning?" Jack greeted Nolan and Lucy as he walked over to the food truck.
"Looks like soone needs a comforting hug," Nolan said, looking at Lucy's pale face suggesting she had been thoroughly scolded by Officer Bradford that morning.
"You dare" Lucy glared at Nolan, who was dumbfounded and trying to open his arms.
Nolan now tried to comfort his girlfriend with words instead: "Was the training officer trying to intimidate you? That's the training officer's job, to try and provoke us, to test our true reactions."
"Just think about how to please him. Isn't that easy?"
"Easier said than done." Lucy glanced at him sideways. "Then you must already know what your training officer likes for lunch, right?"
Seeing Nolan speechless, Jack ordered a burrito like Angela had asked for, along with two bottles of Coke, and turned to walk towards the three training officers who were chatting.
"What's this? Did you make it yourself?" Seeing Jack open the food box, Angela's xican chicken wrap suddenly lost its appeal.
"Pan-fried gyoza, want to try so? I just made them this morning, they're filled with shepherd's purse and pork." Jack, unsure if she could use chopsticks, handed her a plastic fork.
"There's chili sauce here, also homade. You can dip it if you're not afraid of the spice."
Angela nodded repeatedly as she ate, "You can cook Japanese food? I've never had this before, it tastes amazing."
'Just trying to please the training officer, right? I'm good at that', Jack thought mischievously, winking at the two dumbfounded rookies beside him.
