As Damion looked over his status in the Magic System he briefly tried to will the tir to go down faster. This ti, like all the other tis he had tried, Damion got no results. In three more days, he would be a mage, all he had to do was wait.
“For those of you not familiar with this dungeon, let give you a quick rundown,” Mage Hollis said looking specifically at Damion.
Damion had not done much, other than train, in the last couple of years, so despite his achievents at 15, many people had forgotten him.
“This is the desert dungeon. Water is extrely scarce, so scarce that you will likely beco dehydrated if you don’t drink water frequently. The dungeon seems to suck the water right out of you. The main purpose of this dungeon run is to train Mages Fontane, Lucas and Tray, to make the best use of their Fire magic when everything in the dungeon is resistant to fire.
“Knight Wells you need only to look after Mage Blythe. Knight Belcher and I will only step in if things get out of hand. Any questions?”
In preparation for this dungeon run, Damion had done his own research on the dungeon and even made a few gear purchases. One purchase was a different kind of canteen, instead of just a bottle that refilled from an enchantnt that pulled water vapor from the air, this one was a backpack filled with water that had a glyph that duplicated the water inside and a tube that ran up to Damion’s mouth for him to drink from. As long as Damion did not drain the pack in one gulp, which was unlikely since it carried 2 liters of water, the glyphs would duplicate the water inside and refill the bladder.
Another change Damion had made was an undersuit. Unlike artifacts Damion had looked at before, this undersuit was designed to keep him cool. It was a skintight full body suit that ran from his toes to his neck. Luckily, the suit did not beco skintight until it was completely on and reshaped itself to Damion’s body.
Since Damion was wearing a backpack canteen, he couldn’t carry his normal backpack with the spatial stretching enchantnts. In order to carry the rest of his gear, Damion invested in several belt pouches, each with the spatial stretching enchantnt. Though this ti around Damion made sure to purchase these belt pouches with an enchantnt to make them weightless as well. The four belt pouches allowed Damion to store all his other gear and keep it handy without being weighed down by his old bag. Damion felt he would probably keep these for his regular use and get rid of the old bag.

The final piece of gear Damion had acquired was a hood and face mask. Since the dungeon sucked all the moisture out of the air it could find, even from soone’s mouth or eyes, Damion bought this hood and mask to protect his head and eyes from losing moisture. He was not wearing the mask yet, but the neckline of the cooling suit could be seen beneath his normal clothing and armor, so soone as experienced as Mage Hollis should be familiar with it.
Damion could tell both Mage Hollis and Knight Belcher had cooling suits on beneath their armor and he guessed that once they all entered the dungeon, they would put on so type of headgear as well. The two Fire mages and the Light mage however, did not appear to have prepared for the environnt in the dungeon, which left Damion wondering how experienced they were.
“No questions? Good, lets head in then.”
Mage Hollis and Knight Belcher both donned helts that seed to have a flimsy screen in front of their faces. Damion guessed it was so sort of enchanted material to prevent them from losing moisture. Once they stepped through the portal, Damion put on his own hood and mask and followed in behind Mage Blythe.
When Damion ca through the portal he looked around and was glad that his hood and mask protected his eyes. The sun burned down from high in the sky and even with his mask and hood, Damion felt like he was going to go blind. The Fontane brothers and Mage Blythe were not faring well. All three of them were shielding their eyes, trying to look around for danger.
After a few monts, Damion’s eyes were able to adjust, and he guessed it would take the others a bit longer. Now that he could see clearly, Damion could see why this dungeon was called the desert. Right now, they were standing in a wide-open space. The ground was dry and cracking and in the distance Damion could see what he guessed were sand dunes.
“You could have warned us it would be so bright in here,” Mage Lucas complained.
Damion shook his head but said nothing. His mission was to protect the healer in this dungeon run. The two Fire mages were here to gain experience, and adequate preparations would certainly fall under that umbrella. There was no doubt in Damion’s mind the brothers would rember to research their next dungeon run ahead of ti.
“Why is that my job?” Mage Hollis asked. “Your family hired and Knight Belcher to make sure you don’t die in here. Not to make it a walk in the park. And don’t count on Knight Wells to help you out either. His mission is solely to protect Mage Blythe who was also hired by your family to keep you alive.”
A smile crept across Damion’s face when he heard that. Initially, he had been hired to join in the dungeon run and assigned to protect their healer. Normally, Damion would have been obligated to help out the Fontanes as part of the team, even if his task was to protect the healer. But Mage Hollis had just changed his purpose to solely keeping Mage Blythe safe, releasing him from having to jump in and to help the Fontanes.
“Did you tell Knight Wells how to prepare for this dungeon? Or has he been here before?” Mage Tray asked, looking Damion over and seeing that he seed perfectly prepared for the dungeon.
“To my knowledge, Knight Wells has never been in this dungeon before. But he has been in other dungeon runs and has even discovered and cleared Dungeon Breaches. He is an experienced knight and three years younger than the rest of you.”
“What? Don’t give us a load of dung,” Mage Lucas said. “I would have heard of anyone that skilled. He’s probably barely a D Rank knight.”
“Arguing won’t change facts. And Knight Wells’ experience is not relevant to your completing this dungeon,” Knight Belcher snapped. “This is you and your brother’s dungeon run. You claid to be so powerful the two of you could solo any dungeon. Well, let’s get on with it.”
Damion could not help but be shocked by Knight Belcher’s words. From what he said it sounded like these two Fire mages had been bragging and either their father believed them and wanted them to prove it to the world. Or their father had heard enough bragging and sent them here to teach them a valuable lesson in humility.
Whatever was the case, Damion had a feeling he was in for an entertaining few hours.
