Now reading: Chapter 9: Battle in the Dark Woods from Reborn as a Dragon:Rise of The Draconic King, a Fantasy novel by Darkking0921.

The forest stretched wide before John, its ancient trees looming like silent giants, their dark branches entangled in a dense canopy that blotted out most of the moonlight. His wounds from the previous battles had mostly healed, thanks to his natural regeneration. His damaged wing, which had been torn by the direwolf’s bite, now felt stronger, though not yet perfect. It didn’t matter—he was eager to get back into the fight.

John’s mind drifted back to his recent victory over the Tier 4 Direwolf Alpha. He had pushed himself to his limits, defeating a monster stronger than himself. Yet, even after that battle, there was a restlessness inside him. He was growing stronger, leveling up with each fight, but he couldn’t shake the thought that there was still much more to learn.

"System," John said aloud, "when’s my next evolution?"

The system’s response echoed in his mind instantly.

[You are currently at Tier 2. To evolve and reach Tier 3, you must level up to 20. Once you reach the required level, your body will undergo a transformation, granting you new abilities and a significant increase in power.]

John sighed, flicking his tail in frustration. He was eager to evolve, to grow stronger and unlock more of his potential. "I’m still at Tier 2," he muttered to himself. "But I’ve already faced Tier 3 and even a Tier 4 monster. How much more do I need to fight to reach the next level?"

The system chid in again, as if reading his thoughts.

[Host has demonstrated exceptional combat ability. However, to evolve to the next tier, host must accumulate sufficient experience through battle, hunting, and completing quests. Each fight brings you closer to Tier 3.]

John nodded, his mind focused on his goal. He had to keep fighting, keep pushing himself to the limit. If he could defeat creatures stronger than himself now, how much more powerful would he beco once he evolved?

The sound of rustling leaves snapped him out of his thoughts. His sharp senses picked up the faintest movent in the dense underbrush ahead. He crouched low, his muscles tensing as he prepared for another encounter.

Out from the shadows stepped a large beast with thick, matted fur. Its eyes glowed an eerie yellow, and its snout was slick with fresh blood, suggesting it had recently fed. The system imdiately identified the creature.

[Tier 3 Monster: Forest Ravager]

The Ravager let out a low growl, its gaze locked on John. It was massive, its muscular body resembling that of a wolf, but its long, clawed arms made it look far more nacing. The ground trembled slightly with each step it took, its claws digging into the earth as it moved closer.

John grinned. "Perfect. Ti to see how I match up against another Tier 3."

The Ravager charged without warning, its speed catching John off guard. He barely had ti to leap into the air, his wings propelling him just high enough to avoid its razor-sharp claws. The creature skidded to a halt beneath him, snarling in frustration as it slashed upward, trying to grab him.

John twisted in the air and unleashed a torrent of **Dark Fla** from his maw. The black fire engulfed the Ravager’s back, and the beast howled in pain as its fur caught alight. But it didn’t stop. Despite the searing flas, the Ravager lunged again, this ti swiping at John’s legs.

He managed to dodge, but the creature was relentless. Even as it burned, it kept coming, its jaws snapping at him with a ferocity he hadn’t expected. John flapped his wings harder, soaring higher into the sky to get so distance.

"Damn, this thing’s tougher than I thought," John growled to himself, circling back around to attack again.

The Ravager’s eyes followed him closely, and this ti, when John swooped down for another attack, the creature leaped with surprising agility. Its claws scraped against his flank, drawing blood, and John winced at the sharp pain. He retaliated by raking his claws across the creature’s snout, leaving deep gashes that oozed dark blood.

The fight dragged on, with John using his flight to stay out of the Ravager’s reach while dealing damage with his claws and flas. But the beast was resilient, shrugging off wounds that would have crippled lesser creatures.

Finally, after a particularly fierce exchange, John saw his opening. The Ravager stumbled slightly, its movents slowed by its nurous injuries. John took advantage of the mont, diving down with his claws extended, aiming for the creature’s throat.

His talons pierced deep into the Ravager’s flesh, and with a final, guttural snarl, the beast collapsed to the ground, dead.

[Experience Gained: 120]

John exhaled slowly, his wings folding against his back as he surveyed the aftermath of the battle. The Forest Ravager had been a formidable opponent, but he had erged victorious. His body ached from the wounds he had sustained, but the thrill of victory overpowered the pain.

"That was a tough one," John muttered. "But not enough to stop ."

He turned his gaze toward the deeper parts of the forest. He knew there were stronger creatures out there, waiting for him. He could sense their presence—dangerous, powerful monsters lurking in the darkness. If he wanted to evolve and reach Tier 3, he needed to face them head-on.

As John moved forward, the trees began to thin, and the ground grew more uneven. He could feel the air growing colder, the chill biting at his scales. The ominous silence around him hinted at the presence of sothing even more dangerous than the Ravager.

Then, from the darkness, a massive shadow erged. The creature that stepped into the clearing was unlike anything John had faced before. Its body was sleek and serpentine, covered in dark, shimring scales that reflected the faint moonlight. Its eyes glowed with a fierce, cold light, and its jaws dripped with a corrosive liquid that sizzled as it hit the ground.

[Tier 4 Monster: Shadow Serpent]

John’s eyes widened as he took in the sight of the enormous serpent. This was a Tier 4 creature, one even stronger than the Direwolf Alpha he had fought earlier. The Shadow Serpent let out a low, hissing sound, its long body coiling as it prepared to strike.

John steeled himself, his claws digging into the earth. "This is going to be a real challenge."

The serpent moved with terrifying speed, its body slithering across the ground like liquid shadow. In an instant, it lunged at John, its fangs bared and dripping with venom. He leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the deadly bite, but the serpent’s tail whipped around, smashing into him with the force of a battering ram.

John was sent flying across the clearing, crashing into a tree with a sickening thud. He groaned in pain as he pulled himself back to his feet, his vision swimming. The serpent was already on him again, its jaws snapping at his neck.

He flapped his wings, propelling himself into the air just in ti. The serpent’s fangs missed him by inches, sinking into the tree instead, and the venom quickly began to corrode the bark.

"This thing’s not going to give any openings," John muttered, his mind racing as he tried to co up with a strategy. His Dark Fla might be powerful, but the serpent’s scales looked almost immune to regular attacks. He needed to wear it down.

John unleashed a burst of flas at the serpent, but as he expected, the dark fire barely seed to affect its shimring scales. The creature hissed in annoyance but pressed forward, its body slithering around John in a constricting coil.

For a mont, John panicked as the serpent’s powerful muscles began to tighten around him, threatening to crush his bones. His claws flailed wildly, slashing at the serpent’s body, but the beast’s thick scales absorbed most of the damage.

Just as he felt the breath being squeezed out of him, John had an idea. He opened his maw and released his **Dragon Roar**, a deafening blast of sound that reverberated through the air. The force of the roar sent shockwaves through the serpent’s body, causing it to loosen its grip just enough for John to slip free.

He wasted no ti. With a powerful flap of his wings, he soared high into the sky, putting as much distance between himself and the serpent as possible. The beast hissed in fury, its glowing eyes tracking his every movent.

John hovered above the clearing, his wings straining as he caught his breath. "I need to end this quickly."

The serpent lunged again, its massive body coiling and uncoiling with frightening speed. But this ti, John was ready. He dived down, faster than ever before, his claws aid straight for the serpent’s head. His entire body surged with energy, and he focused everything he had on one final strike.

His claws pierced through the serpent’s skull, sinking deep into its brain. The beast let out a final, ear-piercing shriek before collapsing to the ground, its long body twitching in its death throes.

[Experience Gained: 300]

[Level Up: 13]

John landed beside the massive corpse, panting heavily. His body was battered and bruised, but he had won. He had taken down a Tier 4 creature, and with it, he had moved one step closer to his goal.

"I’m getting stronger," John whispered, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
