It was heard that Lian Shouli had jumped into the river, so the whole family didn’t even eat. They quickly put on their coats and followed the others outside.
There’s only one river in Thirty Mile Camp, and this river isn’t big. Except during the sumr when water levels rise, it’s generally not deep at other tis. But, there are a few sections that are deep water pits. The villagers know about these spots and warn the children to stay away.
Because of this, in the history of Thirty Mile Camp, there have been very few drowned by the water, and even fewer who have died by jumping into the river. Overall, this is a village with excellent feng shui, with simple, kind-hearted people and a very peaceful atmosphere.
However, for soone determined to die, a small river like this, and sections like these, are enough. Especially since it’s winter now.
Along the way, the person who delivered the news explained to Lian Manman and the others how they discovered Lian Shouli trying to jump into the river.
At the eastern end of the village, there’s a section of the river that’s deepest. Now, in the lunar January, the ice there is the thickest and smoothest, making it a favorite spot for village children to skate and play on ice sleds. But just recently, a large crack appeared on the ice, reportedly caused by mischievous children trying to catch fish underneath.
This hadn’t happened before, and the reason it happened this year is aningful.
That’s because just before the New Year, at Lian Manman’s family’s fish pond, they broke the ice and fished out many fresh and plump fish.
The village children imitated this. Because the river at Thirty Mile Camp is small, there are rarely big fish. But the children kept their hopes up, thinking there might be fish in the deeper waters. The result, of course, was a futile effort. However, the children were not too disappointed; after all, it was also a kind of ga. If they caught fish, it would be great, and if they didn’t, they still enjoyed the process.
There’s no denying that children’s appetite for playfulness is greater than the sky.
Since they didn’t catch any fish, the crack that was made was left there. Fortunately, the crack isn’t very large, and the village children know about it, so they continued to play nearby as usual.
Just a mont ago, as dusk was approaching and the children playing on the ice were heading ho for dinner, a grown man appeared on the ice, walking like a ghost, as if he had lost his soul.
This man was Lian Shouli. In his hands, he held a carpentry hamr and chisel.
Lian Shouli walked onto the ice, squatted down in front of the crack, and began chiseling the ice with focus and determination.
It so happened that a child, who was originally heading ho for dinner, turned back after walking a long way and saw Lian Shouli’s strange behavior of chiseling the ice. The child thought Lian Shouli was trying to break the ice to fish, so instead of continuing ho, he quietly walked back, planning to join in on the fishing if Lian Shouli succeeded.
This little thought from the child saved Lian Shouli’s life.
When the child noticed the ice hole getting larger and saw Lian Shouli twice attempt to stick his head into it, he sensed sothing was wrong. As he stealthily moved closer and saw Lian Shouli’s expression clearly, he was frightened.
Being able to think of not disturbing Lian Shouli and hoping to catch fish together shows this child had so cleverness. Seeing that sothing was amiss with Lian Shouli, he quickly ran back ho and told the adults.
Everyone in the village knew about the matter between the Wife of He Laoliu and Lian Shouli. Hearing this, the child’s parents were imdiately alard. In a village, everyone more or less knows what kind of temperant and personality others have.
Lian Shouli was an honest man, and honest people are prone to overthinking.
The child’s parents quickly went out, calling on the villagers, just as soone ca to inform Lian Manman’s family.
"He mustn’t have anything happen, why is the third uncle so troubled." Lady Zhang spoke nervously as she hurried forward.
"The pillar of the family... If sothing really happens... such sin... Yeye and her mother would be even worse off," said Lady Wu Wang.
"In this freezing weather, truly..." Lian Shouxin looked up at the sky and cursed under his breath.
