"Quick, take there." Lian Manman was in a state of utter confusion, hastily urging Cai Xiu.
Cai Xiu responded promptly and led the way. It was a small path that Lian Manman had never taken before, but she estimated the general direction headed towards the back of the Evergreen Garden.
Cai Xiu walked quickly with small steps, wiping her sweat as she went, looking very anxious. However, Lian Manman was even more anxious than her. Frustrated by Cai Xiu’s pace, she rushed forward, grabbed Cai Xiu’s arm, and dragged her along at a brisk pace.
Cai Xiu was older, taller, and sturdier than Lian Manman, but Lian Manman, being brought up in the countryside, was still inherently active even though her life had improved. Thus, as Lian Manman dragged Cai Xiu along, she seed unaffected while Cai Xiu was panting even harder.
"What on earth happened? How did he fall from the rock? Who was with him? How bad is the fall, is it serious..." As they hurried, Lian Manman kept questioning incessantly.
If Xiao Qi had really had a bad fall, Lian Manman thought she would certainly be heartbroken. That damned Fatty Shen had promised to look after Xiao Qi for her.
"Miss, I don’t know the details. Soone reported it to the Sixth Master, and I happened to be nearby. The Sixth Master sent to find you..., apparently..." Cai Xiu was sweating profusely as she walked but didn’t complain. She glanced at Lian Manman, noticing her anxious face, her eyes flickering slightly. "Young Master Jixian... it seems that the fall was not light..."
Hearing Cai Xiu’s words, Lian Manman’s urgency increased, wishing she could instantly be in front of Xiao Qi. She quickened her pace even more, dragging Cai Xiu along so fast that her feet barely touched the ground. Cai Xiu stumbled over her skirt several tis, nearly falling, but Lian Manman pulled her up each ti. At this mont, Lian Manman couldn’t bother with how comfortable Cai Xiu was.
Cai Xiu was bitterly distressed, secretly frowning, feeling that Lian Manman truly was a country girl; though she appeared delicate and frail, she had such strength. Amidst their busy path, Cai Xiu still had the thought to look down at the hem of Lian Manman’s skirt.
Lian Manman walked swiftly, but because of the weights on her skirt, its hem did not lift. Yet, upon a careful look, one could occasionally see her feet peeking out.
Despite her reluctance, Cai Xiu had to admit that Lian Manman’s feet were not large. But this was compared to other natural feet; Lian Manman obviously hadn’t bound her feet. Seeing her natural feet, Cai Xiu couldn’t help but feel a sense of superiority.
In Shen Mansion, those like them who served indoors, although nominally servants, were of noble status, not lacking compared to the young ladies of ordinary families. For example, in ordinary families, those who served usually had large feet. However, they had their feet bound since childhood by appointed old grandmothers in the mansion, even smaller and prettier than many young ladies outside.
Walking so swiftly and with such strength to drag an ox, didn’t this prove that Lian Manman was just a naturally unfortunate country girl? Even if she was younger or prettier, what else did she have to compare? Trying to enter the mansion and vie for favor, she really should find out who she was up against. Today, she would let this country girl see what she was dealing with!
With such thoughts, Cai Xiu beca a little distracted, nearly falling again as Lian Manman dragged her along, even getting scraped by an overhanging branch on her neck, which stung painfully.
"Ouch." Cai Xiu couldn’t help but cry out.
"Miss Cai Xiu, where are my brother and the others, why haven’t we arrived yet?" Lian Manman asked.
"We’re there, right up ahead," Cai Xiu said, enduring the pain, pointing forward.
Ahead was a large expanse of rock formations, with jagged stones, and Lian Manman’s heart was in her throat. Shen Qian and Xiao Qi together, mischief added to mischief, wasn’t just double the mischief; this was precisely why she had to stay and keep an eye. Those two, getting into mischief on the rocks and accidentally falling was entirely possible.
Falling from such rocks..., Lian Manman stopped herself from imagining further.
Rounding a protruding boulder, a house appeared in front of them.
The house seed to be built against the mountain, and upon closer approach, it was discovered that the front of the house was mostly built into the rocks, originally constructed within a stone cave.
"It’s here," Cai Xiu led Lian Manman to the door, pushed it open, "Young Master Jixian is inside."
