Lady He was taken aback for a mont, and then her big eyes started to dart around.
"Who, who did you hear that from? That’s not true, we never said such things." Lady He hurriedly denied.
Lian Manman observed Lady He’s anxious deanor and understood that this was a topic that Lady He and Lian Shouyi definitely discussed privately. This was a sensitive topic.
"Really never said? But there’s no smoke without fire..." Lian Manman intentionally said.
"I’ve heard people say that too." Lian Yeye chid in.
"They’re just talking nonsense; I never said that. Erlang’s father never said that either." Lady He replied, "If it’s Si Lang and Xiao Liu, the two of them don’t know anything and are just talking nonsense. Nonsense."
Lady He’s explanation only confird that they indeed discussed the matter of dividing the family, and that Si Lang and Liulang might have been present.
Lian Manman confird this fact and decided not to ask further. Lian Manman refrained from asking, but Lady He was not soone who could keep her words to herself.
"What dividing the family? Our Si Lang and Liulang haven’t settled on wives yet. The head of the family, they’ve married several wives, and have had children. All the good things have been taken by them... The grain from Erlang shouldn’t go to the communal fund, but should co to us. We should save it, just right for Si Lang and Liulang to settle on wives later."
"Old Master and the old lady are holding onto the silver coin, and it’ll definitely all go to the head of the family in the end. We’re destined to suffer,... if Old Master and the old lady would just give us the money for settling wives for Si Lang and Xiao Liu, we’d divide the family now."
"I didn’t say about dividing the family, I just said it casually, I never thought about dividing the family." Realizing she misspoke, Lady He quickly tried to cover.
Lian Manman barely contained her laughter, thinking, Lady He is really sothing, saying everything outright without needing anyone to ask.
"Saying you don’t want to divide the family when you’ve already thought about how to divide it nicely. Always thinking of the good things." Lian Yeye muttered quietly.
After sitting for a while, Lian Manman noticed it was nearly noon and planned to say goodbye and go ho.
"Manman, is the workshop being prepared as your sister’s dowry?" Lady He pulled Lian Manman aside and asked.
The matter of making the workshop Lian Zhizhi’s dowry was neither advertised nor kept secret. Lady He had been frequently visiting the workshop lately, probably hearing so rumors.
"Whatever dowry my sister gets is decided by my parents. I really don’t know much about these things." Lian Manman replied.
"Is there anything that happens in your family that you don’t know about?" Lady He grinned, "Don’t try to fool , everyone knows in your family, you take charge in most matters. Tell Aunt, is that workshop really given to your sister?"
"Your sister’s dowry isn’t small, right? That carpenter you hired, the furniture has been made for a year." Manman, Aunt tells you sothing close to heart. What’s in your family, the main part belongs to Old Lian Family, what they can give to you and your sister is just the scraps. If everything is given to your sister, when it’s your turn, there might be nothing left."
"Manman, don’t think you’re clever. You’re still young and don’t understand these things. Later, you’ll suffer losses. Aunt is reminding you for your good. Both I and your Second Uncle are on your side. Go ho and talk to your parents. If your parents don’t agree, co to us and your Second Uncle. We can make decisions for you."
Lady He’s ridiculous and incoherent words left Lian Manman at a loss, not sure whether to laugh or cry.
"What kind of talk is this?" Lian Manman straightened her face, "The things in our family, my parents have the final say. They decide to whom they’ll give what; we won’t compete. Outsiders having ideas, being envious, jealous is all a waste. If we find out soone talking behind our backs, don’t bla for not giving warning upfront."
"Has the pain from those spankings healed? Forgot how painful it was? Whoever wants to taste the board again, let her say whatever nonsense she wants!"
Lady He had thick skin, but was completely blocked by Lian Manman’s words, her face changing colors in fright.
"This little girl is fierce." Lady He muttered.
Lian Manman got off the kang and put on her shoes, saying goodbye to Lian Shouli, Lady Zhao, and Lian Yeye.
Lady Zhao also got off the kang and put on her shoes, accompanying Lian Yeye to see Lian Manman off, while Lady He stayed motionless on the kang.
"It’s noon, ti to cook, isn’t it?" Lian Manman whispered to Lian Yeye.
"Second Aunt, shouldn’t you go ho to cook now?" Lian Yeye addressed Lady He on the kang.
"Today’s not my turn." Lady He replied.
"You said the sa yesterday." Lian Yeye remarked.
"Um..." Lady He hesitated, "Yesterday, Yaya cooked at ho; today really isn’t my turn."
"Second Aunt, you ca so early and sat here for half a day. Better get back quickly, or the old lady will scold and not feed you." Lady Zhao stated.
It was a very reasonable suggestion, yet Lady He didn’t move; she relished the warmth of Lian Yeye Household’s kang.
"You all go about your business, don’t mind , I’ll sit a little longer and head back in ti." Lady He insisted.
Lian Yeye and Lady Zhao didn’t know what to do with Lady He, so they rely saw Lian Manman out first.
"Sister Manman, did you see that? It’s been like this these days, first day she ca, she wouldn’t leave at alti. We’ve set up the table to eat, and she sits over first. She says whatever we have, she’ll have a bite, she’s not picky about food." Lian Yeye complained to Lian Manman, "My parents couldn’t bear to turn her away, thinking to let her eat once since she caught up. I didn’t agree, I kicked her out."
"Luckily, I kicked her out, otherwise, if she ate that once, she’d want to eat at our place every day!"
