This was Lady Zhou’s trump card against Lady Zhao because she had once brought up the idea of divorcing Lady Zhao, which was stopped by Old Master Lian. Although Lady Zhou could not raise the matter again, she would occasionally bring it up indirectly, making Lady Zhao uncomfortable. Today, Lady Zhou was infuriated and brought up the issue once more.
A hen that doesn’t lay eggs was indeed Lady Zhao’s longstanding emotional ailnt. Both she and Lady Zhou conveniently ignored Lian Yeye’s existence, for to them, no matter how many daughters one had, it was futile; only having sons counted as truly having children.
Lady Zhao then covered her face and ran out crying, her head lowered.
"Third sister-in-law," Lady Zhang, worried that Lady Zhao might take things too hard, hurriedly followed her out, with Lian Manman and Lian Yeye also trailing behind.
Lian Shouli stood there, anxious and also wanting to follow.
Lady Zhou coughed once.
Lian Shouli’s feet seed to be nailed to the spot, and he stayed right where he was.
"Mother, it has been so many years. If there’s no son, then there’s no son. I’ve accepted it," said Lian Shouli honestly, which to him, was speaking up for Lady Zhao.
Lady Zhou snorted coldly.
"I haven’t even started questioning you. You’re making your own decisions now. I told you to throw away the chives, where did you throw them to..."

In the courtyard, Lady Zhang caught up with Lady Zhao and helped her into the West Wing Room.
"Third sister-in-law, all these years and you still don’t understand her nagging. Please don’t take it to heart and don’t think too narrowly. You have Yeye, and your third uncle is a warmhearted person," Lady Zhang consoled Lady Zhao.
With Lady Zhang consoling her, Lady Zhao would probably be alright.
"Yeye, you did well today," said Lian Manman as she walked out with Lian Yeye to talk.
"But Sister Manman, it’s all because of ... Grandma scolding my mother like that," said Lian Yeye.
Lian Manman thought Lian Yeye was referring to Lian Yeye’s act of defiance, which was why Lady Zhou vented her anger on Lady Zhao.
"It was unavoidable," said Lian Manman. She too had resisted Lady Zhou; Lady Zhang had suffered as well, but they both survived and now things were fine.
Lian Yeye lowered her head to think for a mont, "I’m going to find Grandma."
"Manman, bring a basin of water for your third aunt to wash her face," called Lady Zhang from the inner room.
"Alright," Lian Manman responded, going to fetch the water for Lady Zhao, not noticing that Lian Yeye had left.
In the Upper Room, Lian Shouli was being scolded by Lady Zhou, his face beet red, when he saw Lian Yeye walk in, fists clenched.
Lian Yeye went straight up to Lady Zhou.
"Grandma, why do you call my mother a hen that doesn’t lay eggs? Am I not my mother’s child?" Lian Yeye asked Lady Zhou.
Lady Zhou was montarily stunned.
"That bowl of sauce was deliberately left outside by you because you were angry seeing my mother helping Fourth Aunt with work. You deliberately looked for trouble to scold my mother," Lian Yeye continued.
Lady Zhou did an that, but being called out by a child like this, she couldn’t save face. Moreover, in Lian Yeye she saw a second Lian Manman, sothing she would never tolerate.
"Oh Lord, are you blind? Allowing a little girl to point at my nose and scold , what sins have I committed?" Lady Zhou began clapping her hands and wailing.
"Yeye, apologize to your grandma," Lian Shouli shouted to Lian Yeye.
Lian Yeye jolted from Lian Shouli’s yelling, tears streaming down her face, but she pressed her lips tightly together, staying silent. She had done nothing wrong; she wouldn’t apologize to Lady Zhou.
"Third brother, all your shouting won’t solve anything," Lian Xiuxiu said from the side.
"...You little brat, slapping my face," Lady Zhou leaned back, collapsing against the edge of the bed, "I’ve got no face left to live. Old Three, just kill now then."
"Mother, mother..." Lian Shouli called out several tis, but he couldn’t get any other words out.
"Lian Yeye, kowtow to apologize to your grandma. Otherwise, I, I might hit you," said Lian Shouli, driven to a point of a burning face and bulging veins on his forehead, raising his hand to slap Lian Yeye.
Lian Yeye stood straight, her voice silent, refusing to dodge.
"I can’t live like this anymore..." Lady Zhou’s crying rang out once more, signaling Lian Shouxin to take action quickly.
If he didn’t hit Lian Yeye, he couldn’t satisfy Lady Zhou, and she wouldn’t stop making a scene. Lian Shouli hardened his heart, about to bring his hand down on Lian Yeye.

Lian Manman, after bringing a basin of water to Lady Zhao in the West Wing Room, turned around to find Lian Yeye was missing.
"Sister, have you seen Yeye?" Lian Manman walked out and asked Lian Zhizhi.
"She went to the Upper Room," replied Lian Zhizhi.
Such commotions were common in the Lian Family, so Lian Zhizhi and the others continued with their chive flowers, not intervening.
Lian Manman hurried to find Lian Yeye and, upon lifting the door curtain, saw Lian Shouli about to strike her. Yeye, although frightened, stood defiantly without flinching.
She couldn’t let Lian Shouli hit Lian Yeye; she couldn’t let Lady Zhou get her way.
"Sothing’s wrong, Third Aunt has hung herself!"
