"Have you forgotten what you did before? Have you forgotten that you still have an IOU in soone else’s hand?" Lady Chiang frowned as she spoke. Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang have soft hearts, but they are extrely upright people. Both of them cannot stand those who are lazy and gluttonous. Unfortunately, the impression Lian Jizu left on them is precisely that.

Furthermore, although Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang are the heads there, the ones who truly make decisions are Wu Lang and Lian Manman.

Lady Chiang knows very well that with Lian Jizu’s character, it would be impossible for others to offer him any accounting or stewardship roles. Lian Shouxin had straightforwardly refused before, which was clear evidence.

"That... that was ages ago, Old Huang’s calendar. Besides, what could that matter!" Lian Jizu hesitated for a mont before speaking dismissively.

"What could it matter? People don’t trust your character!" Lady Chiang spoke in agitation, blurting out the truth.

"I..." Lian Jizu’s face turned red all of a sudden, but after stuttering for a while, he could not say anything.

"In my opinion, it was your high ambition in the past that made your fourth uncle unable to agree. Now, a few years have passed, and perhaps your fourth uncle’s heart has softened too. Let’s not aim too high at first; start with sothing simple, step by step. If your fourth uncle sees you doing well, wouldn’t he help you get better tasks?" Lady Chiang tried to calm down again, speaking earnestly.

"Are you suggesting I should be like my second uncle, go to the big wagon shop to do odd chores, beco a helper?" Lian Jizu replied sowhat annoyed.

"What’s wrong with doing odd chores or being a helper, people still pick the right ones for that; without soone to vouch, they won’t even take you." Lady Chiang said, "Her second uncle worked as a helper and did chores, earning enough to support the whole family, living well. Now, when anyone talks about him, they all praise him. Who have you seen belittle him for being a helper?"

Tenant farrs are generally simple by nature, only showing respect and envy for those who rightfully earn money and support families.

"He is him, and I am . He barely knows a few words, yet I’ve studied for so many years." Lian Jizu’s face fell. "Never ntion this again."

Saying this, Lian Jizu got up to walk out.

Lady Chiang felt both ashad and angry, taking several deep breaths, but tears still flowed down. This is Lian Jizu, usually gentle without temper, yet once he decides sothing, nobody can persuade him otherwise. Worse still, even now, he clings to his so-called scholar’s identity, considering himself superior. According to Lian Jizu’s own words, if looking for work, it must be sitting in a chair or leading others, only then would he agree to go.

Lian Jizu saw Lady Chiang crying and hesitated without imdiately leaving.

"Even if there were such roles now, they wouldn’t give them to you. Just toil for a couple of years, aren’t you afraid of not getting better roles in the future?" Lady Chiang pleaded softly to Lian Jizu while crying. "Everything has to co step by step, why won’t you listen to advice..."

Seeing Lady Chiang maintain her stance, Lian Jizu’s brief sense of compassion for her vanished due to her tears. He snorted coldly and walked out.

"If you want to go, go yourself." Lian Jizu left the room after saying this.

"If I were a man, I would have gone long ago." Lady Chiang sobbed, waited for a while, and seeing Lian Jizu further away, she had no choice but to wipe her tears. Life must go on, Lian Jizu can’t be relied upon, only herself can be depended on.

Lady Chiang cleared away her things, pondering how to speak with Lady Zhou later to get the items over to Lady Zhang, only to hear the sound of Da Niuniu’s cries from the eastern room, above which were Lady Zhou’s angry scolding.

Hearing Lady Zhou scolding Da Niuniu, Lady Chiang quickly stood up and headed to the eastern room.

In the eastern room, Da Niuniu stood by the edge of the kang, crying while wiping her tears. Lian Yaya stood nearby, looking terrified, glancing at Da Niuniu then at Lady Zhou, not knowing what to do with her hands. Lady Zhou sat on the kang, cursing at Da Niuniu.

"...little slut, bastard child..." Filthy curses poured endlessly from Lady Zhou’s mouth.

Da Niuniu cried even more miserably, and Lady Chiang’s face turned red. Her daughter being cursed like that made her feel it as keenly as if she herself were being directly scolded.

"Grandma, please take a break." Suppressing her rage, Lady Chiang forced a smile. "What happened? How did Niuniu offend you? Tell , and I’ll discipline her."

"Yaya, why haven’t you tried to calm grandma down?" Lady Chiang then reprimanded Lian Yaya. "...What would happen if grandma got seriously upset?"

Lian Yaya, honest and tongue-tied, beca even more flustered when Lady Chiang suddenly reproached her, stamring and failing to say anything.

Lady Zhou stopped scolding Da Niuniu when she heard Lady Chiang blaming Lian Yaya.

"It’s not Yaya’s fault; she didn’t upset ." Lady Zhou stopped speaking, yet her face remained very sour.

"Just a mont ago, everything was alright," Lady Chiang continued to smile. Lady Zhou’s temper is quick to change; Lady Chiang knows her nature well. "Grandma, you’re so forgiving. Da Niuniu is just a child; feel free to correct her and show her what’s right. Just don’t... don’t curse her. Young girls are thin-skinned. Otherwise, if you’re still frustrated, just slap her a few tis, it won’t matter. Just... don’t scold her like that."

"In this household, starting from your father-in-law to your fourth uncle, who wasn’t raised with my scolding? But your girl, I’m not allowed to scold her?" Though Lady Zhou heard Lady Chiang’s tactful words, there was a hint of reproach for cursing Da Niuniu, which imdiately displeased her.
