"Save the fried at sauce for tomorrow," Lian Manman said.
"Alright. We also bought shrimp skins and kelp, which is good, as cold kelp salad is perfect for reducing heat." Lady Zhang saw Lian Manman planning to pick chives and stopped her, "Enough, your sister and I will pick the chives. Don’t dirty your hands, go and stew the at filling, and let Xiao Qi light the fire for you. The firewood is ready; your sister just brought it in."
"Okay," Lian Manman agreed cheerfully and went inside with Xiao Qi.
Xiao Qi lit the fire, and Lian Manman cleaned the big pot before pouring the at filling in to start cooking. The outer door was left open, and the door curtain was lifted. Lian Manman checked outside from ti to ti as she cooked the filling.
Old Master Lian and his family hadn’t co back from the fields yet, and the yard was quiet, with only Lian Zhizhi and Lady Zhang picking chives and whispering with laughter.
"Mother, why haven’t I seen Grandma and the others?" Lian Manman asked.
"They’re all in the back yard; I guess they will start cooking soon too," Lian Zhizhi answered for Lady Zhang.
As the three of them were talking, they heard the curtain of the Upper Room rustle. Lian Xiuxiu, carrying a basin of water, ca out from the Upper Room. Standing at the doorway, Lian Xiuxiu looked up to see Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi. Lian Zhizhi was facing away from her but then turned and smiled at her.
The setting sun’s golden light filtered through the trees outside the courtyard, illuminating Lian Zhizhi’s face with a golden halo. Her face was fair with a hint of blush, with a straight nose and big, black, sparkling eyes; her smiling expression was serene and beautiful.
Since when had this yellow-haired girl beco so attractive?
Lian Xiuxiu’s heart felt as if it had been fiercely clawed. She had reached the middle of the yard when she violently threw out the water from the basin.
"Ouch!" Lian Zhizhi jumped in shock. Almost half of the basin’s water splashed onto her back. It was clearly the dirty water for washing chives, mixed with mud and floating chive leaves.
The dirty water didn’t splash out of the courtyard but inside it. The courtyard was so big, yet with Lian Zhizhi sitting at the doorway of the West Wing Room, nearly half of the water still splashed onto her.
Clearly, Lian Xiuxiu did it on purpose.
Seeing Lian Zhizhi’s back soaked with dirty water, even Lady Zhang, who was normally patient, couldn’t help but get angry.
"Xiuxiu, what are you doing? Zhizhi was sitting here quietly, not bothering you at all, and you just threw water on her?" Lady Zhang pointed at Lian Xiuxiu and demanded.
Lian Manman had also set down her shovel at this point and ran out from the house. Seeing Lian Zhizhi’s wet back, she felt both anger and sympathy.
"She should have sat further away," Lian Xiuxiu retorted, not feeling she had done anything wrong, nor afraid of Lady Zhang. "It’s just a little water that splashed on her, what are you making a fuss about? You’d think she’s so precious lady, too delicate to be touched or bumped into."
Utterly unreasonable, and speaking to her with such tone and attitude, not even calling her sister-in-law, Lady Zhang’s hands trembled with anger.
Lian Manman glanced at Lian Xiuxiu, then without a word, turned and entered the room. She carried out a basin of water, quickly walked to Lian Xiuxiu’s side, and with a splash, drenched her head to toe.
Lian Manman’s series of actions were too quick. Not only Lian Xiuxiu but also Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi were taken aback.
"Lian Manman, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind? You dare to throw water on ?" Lian Xiuxiu shook the water off her body and raised her hand to hit Lian Manman.
Lian Manman had already put down the basin of water and retreated to the doorway of the West Wing Room. Arguing with soone so unreasonable was a waste of breath. An eye for an eye, she would make sure that Lian Xiuxiu wouldn’t dare to bully anyone again.
"Whose fault is it for not standing back?" Lian Manman mimicked Lian Xiuxiu’s tone, "It’s just a few splashes on you, what’s all the fuss about? You’d think you were so delicate young lady from a wealthy family who can’t be touched or bumped."
"You, you..." Lian Xiuxiu, too angry to speak, pointed at Lian Manman.
"Rember this: if you dare to bully my sister or anyone in my family again... however you bully them, that’s exactly how you’ll get it back," Lian Manman said coldly.
"You, just you wait." With a smack, Lian Xiuxiu slamd the basin to the ground, wiping the water off her face as she ran into the house.
"...She must be going to get your grandma, this is like poking a hornet’s nest," Lady Zhang said.
"Otherwise, should I just stand by and watch my sister get bullied?" Lian Manman replied, "Mother, even with you present, she dared to act like this. Out of nowhere, if we let her off this ti, there will be no end to it. She’s in the wrong; what do we have to be afraid of?"
In Lady Zhang’s eyes was full of worry. She didn’t like quarrels and argunts. However, Lian Zhizhi was bullied for no reason, and Lian Manman’s words were as hateful as they were logical.
"Mother, I’m really scared. When grandma cos later, you must hold firm," Lian Manman pulled Lian Zhizhi to her side, both hiding behind Lady Zhang.
"You child, and you’re scared of sothing," Lady Zhang said helplessly, but she tightly shielded her two daughters. Let her face Lady Zhou’s fury.
While they were talking, the curtain to the Upper Room rustled open, and Lady Zhou, stomping her tiny feet, stord out like a whirlwind, followed by the soaking wet Lian Xiuxiu, Lady He, Zhao Xiue, and Lian Yaya.
"Manman, that wretched girl, dares to splash water on her aunt. I’m not dead yet, and you’re all bullying ! Are you just waiting for to die so I can’t be in your way anymore? Co on then, if you’re angry, don’t take it out on Xiuxiu, why not just beat to death?" Lady Zhou said as she charged toward Lady Zhang, cursing non-stop.
