Lady Zhang was kind-hearted and rarely quibbled over money, and she felt sorry for Lian Shouxin.

"Dad, mom, I don’t agree with this," Lian Manman thought for a bit before saying, "The things we got from the division of the family are already few, this ration is rightfully ours."

Lian Manman’s words were reasonable; Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang exchanged glances. Even if they didn’t want the Upper Room’s ration anymore, they had to consider their children’s opinions. This family wasn’t just theirs alone.

"Even if we don’t want this ration, no one will speak well of us," Xiao Qi muttered.

Wu Lang and Lian Zhizhi didn’t rush to speak. Even a child as young as Lian Xiaoqi understood things that Lady Zhang and Lian Shouxin couldn’t possibly fail to understand.

"Mom, if we just give up the ration like this, not only will no one speak well of us, I’m afraid so people will even start scheming against us," Lian Manman continued.

Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang remained silent because they knew Lian Manman was right.

The Upper Room was now crowded and full of gossipers with different personalities. If they just gave up the ration like that, Lady Zhou, and certain people from the Upper Room, wouldn’t say they did it for the sake of their father and brothers but would more likely say they were wealthy now, no longer caring about the ration. Worse, they might say that now they were rich, they only cared about eating well themselves without looking after their father and brothers.

"With our current situation, we don’t eat polished white rice and fine white flour at every al. This year’s harvest isn’t in yet, and if we don’t take our share of the ration from the Upper Room, we’ll still need to buy grains," Wu Lang said.

When it ca to Shouxin and Lady Zhang’s virtues, being sowhat democratic, respecting their children, and being willing to listen to them were definitely among them.

"In that case, I’ll still go to the Upper Room to get our ration," Shouxin thought for a while and then said, "We’re going to make zongzi with Japonica rice, so shall we take fewer pounds of the large yellow rice?"

"We should still take as much as we’re entitled to," Manman said promptly, "We’re making Japonica rice zongzi with our own money. Besides, the large yellow rice has its uses for us, and it won’t be wasted."

Manman had her own plans in mind. Based on her understanding of Old Master Lian, Lady Zhou, and the people of the Upper Room, she believed in clear-cut dealings, not giving anyone the impression that they could overstep boundaries.

As for what followed, Shouxin wanted to show filial respect to Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou within reasonable bounds, Manman did not object. Even though Lady Zhou had been very unkind to them, and so of her actions chilled them to the bone, she had given birth to Shouxin, and now she was old and lacked the ability to make a living. Emotionally, Manman could not grow close to Lady Zhou, but regarding material support, she did not begrudge it.

Filial piety was sotis a form of respect for one’s own origins.

Of course, this did not prevent her from deciding the specific standards and matters of support based on Lady Zhou’s attitude.

When Shouxin went ho to claim the ration, Manman, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi all followed.

Xiao Qi was the first to run to the Upper Room to scout.

"My grandpa isn’t at ho, just my grandma and my elder aunt are," he reported.

"Then we’re not in a hurry. We’ll talk when grandpa cos back," Manman said.

Shouxin nodded in agreent.

Old Master Lian didn’t return ho carrying his hoe from the fields until close to dusk. He was undoubtedly hardworking, even among the diligent farrs. Ever since he started farming, he never wasted a day; after als, he would carry his hoe to the fields to tend to the crops.

"Dad," Shouxin greeted him and after chatting about family matters for a mont, got to the point, "Dad, about our ration..."

"I was just about to find you to talk about that," Old Master Lian imdiately replied, "You haven’t co to get the ration for two months, I’ve got it all ready for you, let’s move it now."

"Master, we want to wrap zongzi, and we’d like twenty jin of glutinous rice, taken from our food ration," Lian Manman said with a smile.

In their family of six, twenty jin of glutinous rice would amount to roughly three jin a person, a little bit extra. One zongzi takes two to three liang of rice, so each person could make about a dozen zongzi, just enough to eat.

"Should we wrap with just twenty jin of rice, will that be enough?" Old Master Lian asked, "We celebrate this only once a year, and the children are all cheering."

Cheering, in the local dialect of Thirty Mile Camp, roughly ans eagerly looking forward to sothing.

"That should be enough, it’s just for eating over the festival period. Zongzi can’t be stretched," Shouxin replied.

"That’s true," Old Master Lian said, and then headed out with Shouxin to move the grain.

After the family division, Shouxin had wanted to move his annual food ration all at once, but Lady Zhou had scolded him and wouldn’t let him take it. Her reason was that she feared they didn’t know how to live frugally and might run through their entire food supply too quickly or even sell it, leaving them nothing to eat later, starving, and eventually having to ask the Upper Room for more.

Lady Zhou’s reasoning made everyone think that she was looking out for Shouxin’s family’s best interests. However, Lian Manman felt in her heart that this was just Lady Zhou’s display of her need to control.

Old Master Lian hadn’t said anything at the ti but seed to sowhat agree with Lady Zhou’s view, fearing that after the division of the family, they wouldn’t know how to ration their food and would end up starving later.

Left with no alternative, Shouxin had to take his food ration once a month or once every two months.

While Old Master Lian was asuring out the glutinous rice for Shouxin, Lady Zhou walked over with a stern face.

"How much glutinous rice is being asured here?" As soon as she saw a small bag filled to the brim with glutinous rice, Lady Zhou imdiately raised her voice.
