Lady Zhang hurriedly invited Lady Chiang to sit down.

Lady Chiang sat down and first checked on Niuniu, seeing that Niuniu was sleeping soundly. She heaved a sigh of relief and felt grateful to Lian Zhizhi and Lian Manman.

"Zhizhi, Manman, I’ll rember today’s kindness. I may not be very skilled, but if you ever want embroidery or needlework done, just ask . As long as you don’t mind my crude stitching, I’ll make whatever you want," she said.

"Eldest sister-in-law, look at you talking like an outsider," Lian Zhizhi and Lian Manman replied with a laugh.

Lady Chiang pulled out her handkerchief to wipe away the tears that had gathered in her eyes.

"Fourth Auntie, I’m just feeling so wronged..."

Because the topic was awkward, Lady Zhang wouldn’t have brought it up unless Lady Chiang did first; now that Lady Chiang had opened the subject, Lady Zhang proceeded to ask her a few questions, following Lady Chiang’s lead.

"Fourth Auntie, I’m only going to tell you this," Lady Chiang sobbed a couple of tis before she continued, "...Officer Huang lives in the town because Niuniu’s grandfather had once helped soone draft a docunt for the County Yan and had drunk with Niuniu’s grandfather along with your great-nephew. They had a few interactions. My mother and I rely know who he is, we’ve never spoken to him."

"On the day Erlang took a wife, my mother was tasked by my grandmother to stay ho and watch over the house. She wanted to send a ssage to Caiyun in the county town but never had the chance. Knowing that Officer Zhou would be going to the Zhao Family’s place next door to attend the wedding feast since they are close neighbors, she instructed to find Officer Zhou, who works at the County Yan, and ask him to sohow pass a ssage to Huahua. Duoduo also knew about this and that day, as Duoduo and I were walking with Niuniu around to the back of the estate, we ran into Officer Zhou. I relayed my mother’s ssage to him."

"I knew it wasn’t entirely proper, but it was a dire request from my mother, and with Duoduo there, I couldn’t not say anything when we bumped into Officer Zhou. I wouldn’t know how to explain to my mother if I ca back without doing as she asked."

Lady Chiang stated that her encounter with Officer Zhou was in compliance with Lady Gu’s instructions, to ask for his help in delivering a ssage. Since Lian Duo had been willing to vouch for Lady Chiang, it seed that Lady Chiang was not lying about this aspect.

But Lady Chiang hadn’t told the complete truth either.

Her eting with Officer Zhou had been one-on-one, sothing Zhang Caiyun had witnessed with her own eyes.

Hearing Lady Chiang put it this way, Lady Zhang thought of sothing else.

"If your mother wanted to send a ssage, why didn’t she have Jizu ask Officer Zhou? It would have been much more convenient for you. Your mother is a worldly-wise woman," Lady Zhang said thoughtfully.

"Worldly-wise" in the dialect around Thirty Mile Camp roughly ant soone experienced and adept at socializing, and who handles interpersonal relationships with thoroughness and propriety.

"Fourth Aunt, it really was my mother’s instruction. If I lie, may I be struck by lightning," Lady Chiang said, starting to wipe her tears again, "Fourth Aunt, I’m confiding this matter only to you. I feel so stifled, if I don’t talk to soone about it, I’ll likely fall ill from the distress. I haven’t even ntioned this in front of Jizu or my grandmother, and I won’t bring it up in the future. Let’s just leave our conversation at that. If soone has to take the fall, let it be ."

"Fourth Aunt, you are a kind person. You’re the only one who understands my suffering..." Lady Chiang cried bitterly.

"Stop crying now, you’re a good child. I believe in you," Lady Zhang comforted Lady Chiang, patting her hand gently.

"Fourth Aunt, as long as you understand , even if I were to die unjustly, I won’t beco a confused and unjustly tornted spirit," sobbed Lady Chiang.

Lady Zhang was gentle and affectionate, often overflowing with maternal warmth, and at this mont, Lady Chiang needed just that type of sympathy, intimacy, and a listener who wouldn’t spread her words further.

"Your great-nephew, just a few words from others, and he believed them, yelling about divorcing . What was nothing beca sothing, and what was false turned to truth. Over all these years, I haven’t wronged him in the slightest..." Lady Chiang couldn’t hold back her grievances against Lian Jizu any longer.

"He’s just confused for the mont. Once he thinks it through, you two will still be a couple as good as before. Don’t let this incident leave a knot in your heart..." Lady Zhang advised.

Lady Chiang cried for a while, but ultimately, as a woman of strong self-control, she did not let it go on endlessly, managing to slowly stop her tears. Niuniu shifted in her sleep, seeming about to wake up. Lady Chiang quickly dried her tears, picked up Niuniu, and bid Lady Zhang goodbye as she left.

"What’s true or false in this matter?" Lady Zhang mused, frowning after Lady Chiang had left. "I think, Jizu’s wife isn’t bad, not the sort of person to do such a thing."

"I can’t believe that my elder sister-in-law would really have anything to do with that arrest officer," Manman added after so thought.

"You also don’t think Jizu’s wife is that sort of person, right?" Lady Zhang asked.

"...I just feel she’s a smart woman, one who wouldn’t do sothing foolish," Manman revealed her genuine thoughts. Officer Zhou had already taken a wife, and there would be no benefit at all for Lady Chiang to be involved with him. She was self-disciplined, calm, and would not act against her own interests, certainly not soone to be swept away by "love."

"Jizu’s wife’s position isn’t easy. Your aunt would rather have her take the risk of finding that constable to relay a ssage than have Jizu relay it," Lady Zhang glanced in the direction of the Upper Room, "Being non-biological, no matter how well they get along on the surface, there’s always a separation in the heart..."
