Wang Youhuai had promised Yingzi sothing long ago, yet it had never been fulfilled.
However, now that Wang Youhuai was married, he certainly wouldn’t want Yingzi’s matter to be exposed, which was why he had agreed so readily just now. At such a ti, was the weight of being a blood cousin sufficient?
Because she was preoccupied with her thoughts, Lian Manman didn’t pay attention to where she was going and almost bumped into a girl coming from the opposite direction.
"Young lady, where’s the toilet?" the girl asked Lian Manman.
"The toilet?" Lian Manman took a glance at the girl in front of her. The girl appeared to be about fifteen or sixteen years old, wearing a pale pink blouse with a greenish vest over it, and a pale pink skirt with embroidery below. Aside from the silver hairpin, she also had two small red flowers in her hair.
This face was unfamiliar; she wasn’t from Thirty Mile Camp. Judging by her attire, she seed to be a maid, yet her dress was different from those of the maids in Scholar Wang’s Household. Moreover, the way this girl spoke did not sound like she was from Jinyang Town but rather, had the sa accent as the young girl who had spoken to Xiao Qi earlier at the banquet.
Lian Manman’s heart stirred imdiately.
"The toilet seems to be over there," Lian Manman pointed and said.
The girl in the green vest, seemingly in a hurry to use the toilet, did not ask further and hurried off in the direction Lian Manman had indicated.
A clump of bird-of-paradise flowers was there, and beyond it was the side door from which Lian Manman had co out earlier.
It wasn’t a place to linger, so Lian Manman quickly went to find Lian Yeye. Coincidentally, Lian Yeye had just co out of the toilet, so Lian Manman pulled her and hurriedly left through the courtyard gate.
"Yeye, how are you, does your stomach still hurt?" Lian Manman asked Lian Yeye.
"Sister Manman, I don’t know what’s wrong. My stomach still hurts a bit. But it’s nothing serious," Lian Yeye said, though her complexion didn’t look too good. Her stomach pain was botherso, but she didn’t want to ruin Lian Manman and Xiao Qi’s enjoynt of the banquet and the play because of her own discomfort.
At this mont, Lian Manman just wanted to leave the place as soon as possible. To avoid any scene later, if that girl saw her, it wouldn’t be too good.
"Yeye, don’t force yourself to endure it. Let’s go ho," Lian Manman didn’t let Lian Yeye talk any further and went to call Xiao Qi.
"My sister has a stomachache; we are going ho now," Lian Manman found the old woman entrusted by Wang Youheng to care for her and told her.
Having heard this, the old woman didn’t ask any questions but led the way for them, escorting them out of the Wang Residence. Lian Manman also instructed the old woman to inform Wang Youheng that they had left, and then she took Lian Yeye and Xiao Qi back ho.
Upon arriving ho, Lian Yeye went to the toilet a couple more tis and started to show signs of dehydration, her little face turning yellowish. Lady Zhao, anxious, sought advice from Lady Zhang. Lady Zhang picked out two tender purslanes that Old Fourth had dug out from the wild vegetables and had Lian Manman weigh two taels of white sugar, which she boiled into two large bowls of thick liquid for Lian Yeye to drink down.
After another trip to the toilet, Lian Yeye finally stopped running.
"Take another dose tonight, and you’ll be all right," Lady Zhang said.
In the households of tenant farrs, common ailnts like diarrhea or a bit of headache and fever rarely necessitated a visit to the doctor. They had small ho redies passed down through generations, made from readily available local materials, convenient and practical. Especially in the case of autumn diarrhea, which often stemd from eating cold foods in the sumr and manifested in the fall, drinking a decoction of Portulaca oleracea was highly effective.
When Lian Yeye was out of danger, Lian Manman started to think back on the recent events. She had no idea what had happened afterward; when they left, the Wang Family was calm as still water.
Had the maid failed to discover Wang Youhuai and Yingzi, or had she seen them but pretended not to? Pushing open that side door made it impossible not to hear those sounds. And that maid was most likely from the bride’s side. If she heard and saw it, even if she didn’t make a scene right there, she should have told soone on the bride’s side afterward.
By the ti Lian Shouxin, Old Master Lian, and Lian Shouren had all returned from their seats, and Lian Manman had cautiously probed without any news of what she wanted to hear, she started to feel disheartened.
If this move yielded no results, what should she do next? She really didn’t want other families drawing away their custors, especially those with clearly dishonest intentions like Yingzi’s family.
After dinner, as the sun set, and Lian Manman was contemplating how to bring up the issue so the family could think of a solution, Chunzhu’s Wife ca over for a visit.
Seeing the excited, slightly flushed face and bright eyes of Chunzhu’s Wife as she entered, Lian Manman knew she must have brought so juicy gossip.
"Sister-in-law, have you heard?" Chunzhu’s Wife began right away.
"What happened?" Lady Zhang also caught the scent of juicy gossip and eagerly asked.
"It’s about Scholar Wang’s Family. Today wasn’t it the wedding of Eldest Young Master Huai? I heard that Eldest Lady Huai is quite a looker, top-tier really..." Chunzhu’s Wife started babbling about Eldest Lady Huai’s beauty and her rich dowry.
"Auntie, what happened to Scholar Wang’s Family?" Seeing Chunzhu’s Wife going off-topic, Lian Manman followed up with a question. She wouldn’t normally do this, but today was different; she wanted to know quickly what had happened to Scholar Wang’s Family.
"The one in trouble is Yingzi, Liu Laosi’s Yingzi," Chunzhu’s Wife said.
