The migration north followed the sa path the family had taken during their journey south. The first major landmark on this trek was the Crocodile Kingdom, a place that had left Jas with more than a few ntal scars.
By the second day of the migration, the family stood once again before the churning, treacherous waters of the Great River. Even now, Jas felt a lingering sense of dread. However, with the massive herbivore herds long gone, the concentration of Arican Alligators in the channel was significantly lower than before.
The crossing was uneventful. The family swam through the currents and reached the northern bank without a single incident.
As they climbed onto the muddy flats, Jas spotted four or five alligators of various sizes sprawled across the shore. They looked like tourists lounging on a beach, their bodies stretched out to soak in the warmth of the rising sun.
As ectothermic creatures, this morning ritual was a biological necessity. Their internal temperatures and tabolic rates plumted during the cold nights, leaving their movents stiff and sluggish. To regain the fluid mobility required for hunting, they needed to absorb thermal energy from the environnt.
Jas's family didn't intend to disturb these cold-blooded thugs; they simply wanted to circle around and continue their journey. But just as they prepared to leave, a frantic, terrified shriek tore through the air.
PSHHH!
The ground erupted in a flurry of sand and mud. Jas and his parents whipped around to see the source of the chaos.
A Jaguar—a creature that looked like a lethal hybrid of a tiger and a leopard—had exploded from the brush. It had already latched onto the neck of a sunbathing alligator.
Jaguars were impressive specins, weighing up to 150kg. They possessed the rosette patterns of a leopard but the thick, muscular fra and heavy limbs of a tiger. This particular alligator was a sub-adult, and the Jaguar used its superior mass to pin the reptile to the dirt. It clamped its jaws onto the back of the alligator's neck, its powerful shoulder muscles bunching as it shook its head to tear through the thick hide.
On land, the alligator was a clumsy, vulnerable relic. It struggled for several minutes, its thick tail lashing the mud, but the Jaguar never lost its grip. Eventually, the reptile's legs gave a final, desperate kick before it went limp, suffocated by the cat's relentless hold.
The other alligators on the bank remained completely indifferent. They didn't move a muscle to help their kin, watching with cold, reptilian eyes as the Jaguar dragged its heavy prize back into the jungle.
Jas watched the scene with a mix of surprise and disdain. These river tyrants were being bullied on their own doorstep and didn't even care. He wasn't sure if it was a lack of intelligence or just pure apathy.
As the Jaguar vanished, the remaining alligators returned to their sluggish sunbathing as if nothing had happened. Seeing how easily the Jaguar had secured a kill, Jas felt a surge of predatory interest. He wasn't the only one; Mom and Dad were clearly intrigued as well. They hadn't eaten all day, and a slow-moving alligator was a high-protein feast waiting to be claid.
"ROAR~~"
Dad issued the low-frequency signal for the hunt. The family dropped into the tall grass near the riverbank, their eyes locked onto the four remaining reptiles.
The alligators were territorial, spaced out to ensure no one infringed on their sun-soaked patches. Mom and Dad singled out a sub-adult sitting at the edge of the group—an easy target with a clear path for a stealthy approach.
After a few minutes of observation, the targets began to stir, preparing to slide back into the safety of the water. Jas knew the window was closing.
BAM!
Jas was the first to move. He burst from the thicket like a golden bolt of lightning, targeting the sub-adult alligator before it could reach the waterline.
THUD!
Before the reptile could react, Jas was on top of it. He drove his weight into its back and lunged for the neck.
Compared to the short canines of a Jaguar, the elongated sabers of a Smilodon were a specialized death sentence. Jas didn't need to rely on sheer bite force to crush the windpipe; his teeth functioned like twin daggers, sliding deep into the soft tissue of the neck with terrifying ease.
HISS! HISS!!
The alligator thrashed, its powerful tail swinging and its thick legs clawing at the mud in agony. Jas didn't budge. He pinned the creature's torso with his forelimbs and used his heavy paws to clamp its jaws shut.
An alligator's bite is legendary for its closing force, but the muscles responsible for opening its mouth are surprisingly weak. By applying downward pressure on the snout, Jas effectively locked the reptile's primary weapon.
"ROAR~~"
Mom and Dad arrived seconds later. They piled their weight onto the struggling alligator, pinning it to the mud like a slab of at on an anvil.
The tables had turned. The river tyrant that had once been a nightmare in the water was now nothing more than a helpless al on the shore.
